I feel the same way about most sets and lines, I am always happy to see a bad set and save money. The Opera House didn't really do it for me so much so I wondered if Lego would continue with the line as unlike most lines they were widening the gap between sets rather than making it smaller. I think the next one need to be great and for me that means a building that works well in Lego so nothing too curvy. Looking at the Architecture line I would go with Big Ben, the White House or the Empire state building. It would be great if they bid Big Ben and a Tower Bridge in the Architecture line.

They did do Big Ben in the architecture line already, it's in the picture you posted.

I meant it would be great if they did a creator expert Big Ben and a architecture Tower Bridge because we have them the other way around already.

Ah, makes sense now...I agree, it would be cool to have them on the same scale.

I don't remember seeing russian architecture. but maybe that's just too hard to replicate.

    THAT is often the attraction.

Sydney Opera House has its fans because they look at it and say "I never would've thought that it was possible". It's a good facsimile of the original. (Those who don't like it are likely to think that it's not good enough.)

I strongly suspect that many AFOLs come out of their Dark Age because they see something that would've been impossible to achieve first time around - rounded bits, detailing, things that work, better SNOT, new colours.

Only my 3rd year into the Winter Village buying and I'm passing...really gutted it's a straight up remake, such a waste of a once a year theme!

I was lucky to get the original last year at RRP so I guess I did ok, but such a shame that there's nothing new for people who have this already!

You're the only one. There's been rumours of it for nearly a year now.

Such a lazy release. I hope sales are completely crap.

    So why?

Did they have a new set planned but a problem (design, parts?) meant they couldn't see it through so a rerelease solved a problem?

Perhaps they needed to free up some production capacity, this will be a very short run surely.

Cant imagine that it was always planned this way. Bit gutted as I always look forward to the new wv set but never mind. Perhaps a winterfied Ferris wheel is in order this December.

20 minutes ago (right now it is 9:20 AM EST August 18, 2015) Lego released an official desginer video of the new Winter toy shop for this years holiday set. You can see the video here: https://youtu.be/8P_UheN0_bI

@cheshirecat Rumours of a re-release have been around ever since someone saw the name of it somewhere (a video? can't remember) around Jan or Feb this year. I suspect it's always been planned this way, and that they ran out of ideas for the line some time ago (witness the Santa's Workshop and possibly even the Winter Village Market).

What will really get to me is if either of the xmas promo sets are really good...if they are like last years then I'll completely pass but if it's something really good that fits into the WV theme but with no WV set for me to get them with I'll be really annoyed.

I wouldn't mind the straight up re-release if there was a second original set coming out at the same time, but this is a one per year theme, what a waste for those who already have this set.

Even if it was a second toy shop but with an original design then I'd at least consider getting it and dressing it as a different shop.

On the flip side.  Sourcing this release with the original may prove of value in the aftermarket.

Of course, if "Legends" were any indication this won't be true..

Well the resellers won't be happy. Lego just killed the aftermarket for not only the Toy Shop, but also the Post Office and Bakery.

Btw, apparently inflation in Denmark is 5% annually.

Got to admit - it was moderately amusing seeing lots of resellers frantically trying to dump stock on ebay over the last couple of weeks as rumours intensified.

I will be surprised to see this become a trend in very many other themes, but who knows. Maybe production really has gotten to the point where LEGO can easily 're-release a previously popular set with little disruption of current themes. Cafe Corner isn't a far stretch though considering the theme has really taken off. This definitely makes me start to have some small doubts about reselling in general.

Don't forget though, that the same happened with the H1 techincs sets; #42041 was a straight re-release of #8041 , so this is far from unprecedented.

As for the the motives? Who knows. Overstock from the first time round? Want to help people who missed it last time? Trying to intentionally disrupt the re-selling market?
Who knows - but if TLG many to cast doubt of the 'exclusiveness' of a set post-retirement, whether intentionally or not, it really would add a huge gamble to the mix.

A little disappointed in this year's winter village set. I generally look forward to seeing what is new with the sets. The caroling singers look great! I already have the old toy shop from a couple years past. I don't really want another toy shop. At least I saved myself 80$......then again I'll just buy something else that is lego.
  • ShibShib UKMember Posts: 5,294
I'm really trying not to go mad multiple posting here, but this has been just about the biggest disappointment for me since I started collecting - nerd rage isn't normal for me so it's pretty difficult to deal with ;-).

I suspect it's always been planned this way, and that they ran out of ideas for the line some time ago (witness the Santa's Workshop and possibly even the Winter Village Market).

I can't believe that it's a case of LEGO being out of ideas - while Santa's Grotto or a Market may not be on a traditional Christmas Village list they are fairly common on modern ones, so even if you ignore stuff that LEGO would be reluctant to do from other Christmas Village Models - such as a church or pub, there's still so much more they could do. At the very least there are dozens of other shops. Even considering the 'out of ideas' notion, surely they would at least do an original design on the toy shop, a straight up re-release like this only happens because they want to re-release a set, not because there is nothing else for them to do.

a single line like this having a rerelease will not kill the reselling market, but it is likely to stagnate the Winter Village secondary market for at least 6 months - if we get an early rumour of another rerelease then potentially a lot longer.

Part of me wonders if there is something more to come on this that we are yet to see...e.g. LEGO might be fighting leaks by tactically making some information (such as the toy shop) easy to find while keeping other information (the potential for a different set that @Grogall hinted at) much quieter. Maybe this is just wishful thinking in hoping there will be another set announced in a months time!

I find this completely shocking, actually!
The crazy thing is I sold my Toy shop last year, and I never thought I'd get a second chance to own it. Still not too happy about it, though.

Where are you getting your data from to make this claim?  (On UK Ebay) I only see 11 #10199 sets available right now, and only 3 sold in August so far.

Btw, smart resellers will not even think of dumping.  Collectors will always want the original > v2.0.

They can't be out of ideas. All they would have to do is Google 'Dickens Christmas' to get a zillion ideas from those old porcelain miniatures.
But I hope that lots of people do buy it, though I own the older version. This may mean other 'neo-classics' are going to get a refurbished treatment. But what would have been best is if they re-issued this one AND had a new one also. I want a Cafe Corner and especially a Green Grocer, but alongside a new modular, not as a replacement.

It was anecdotal, rather than factual - based on the fact they've been popping up in my feed regularly the last week or so, whereas I rarely saw it come up before that. Doesn't mean they're selling, just there appear to be more listed for sale than a couple of weeks ago.

The WV train was a piece of rubbish. Sure, it was winter-themed and a train, but in terms of the actual model, the locomotive was absolute garbage compared to more recent trains.

Oh and I say that as a Trains fan.

This is how awesome the new Winter Toy Shop is!!:
    2015 Set - $79.99 for 898 pieces
    2011 Set - $59.99 for 815 pieces

    That's $20 more for 83 more pieces.  That's a steal guys!!!!!

I can't believe I'm probably going to miss this for the second time. I'm getting the Temple of Airjitzu over the holidays and have been saving up for a Detective's Office, so there probably won't be anything left in my budget for this set. Who knows, though, maybe I'll get some previously unknown holiday money or something.

    :disappointed:
Technically this is NOT 2nd version of Winter Village Toy Store since the the building structure and the Christmas tree is exactly the same as #10199

Kind of like when I painted my house with slightly darker color than what it came with.  Still the same version of house, different paint job. sigh...

Perhaps, but still a rip when it was cheaper then.  Just super annoying that

I wouldn't balk at all if it was $80 for 898 pieces and something that WASN'T the damn near same exact set.

While I wouldn't use such strong words, the train is rather weak as far as trains go, and if it weren't winter themed there would be little to no appeal.  I'd definitely like to see a new winter train release.

Doesn't inflation make it even better deal ?  If #10199 now costs $73 with inflation, that means you get 83 more pieces for just $7.  (Assuming you were looking to get a "Winter Toy Shop" to begin with)

£60. There's no alternate building option. The image in the small inset box is of the back of it.
