Thanks Renny! Picked one up just now. Been hoping it would go on discount before EOL.

P.S. And everyone please remember to go through Brickset's portal to Amazon so they can get some affiliate cash on your purchase.

Glad to help :)  I've been waiting on an online sale for this set for awhile now after missing out on the Lego store sale. Figured others might be in the same boat.

    Thanks Renny!

I want to bite on this one but not quite sure. Been buying so many Lego's lately lol.

Is this current discounted price worth it for this set? Not sure how often this goes on sale, if at all.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
so it's listed at the price it should have been all along.

I personally think the discounted price is about right for this set.  Outside of the in store Lego sale, this is the first time I have seen a significant discount.

Looking like many of the Hobbit 5 Armies sets are on sale at Amazon for about 20% off now.
I still cannot pull the trigger on it, even with it being Smaug... Needs to be cheaper for me
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
@Legoguyx the price is only decent at 20% discount, but I'm too worried about it disappearing completely to hold out for a better discount. The set is already gone in Europe I believe, not sure about other regions. When I visited Downtown Disney Lego 3 weeks ago, they didn't have any more on the shelves.

    Thanks Renny, BrickDancer.

Good point about the set disappearing, and possibly soon since I dont really see it in stores anymore. The only remaining store where I've seen this set recently is at TRU. I know my local Target's don't carry it anymore.

I may try an Amazon price match at TRU.

What helps me make my decision is that I do not need it. I am not collecting the LoTR or Hobbit sets, so it makes not having Smaug a lot easier for me I agree that if someone is waiting for a cheaper price and really wants one for their personal collection it is probably best to pick it up now.

I am actually a bit Lotr fan , have the full theme.

Hobbit , the sets I find really lacklustre for the bigger part. I bought a few and mostly smaller ones .

Now the Smaug set ..... The question really is not about full price or discount ..it's about , Is this a set worth having ... ? By most accounts I've heard , it's a poor set which contains a Smaug .

So the question is does one buy a poor set , good deal or not .. ?

Honestly I've looked at the photos now and then,I've not been able to convince myself about this
    one ...

Is there a defendant in the house ?

Only reason I bought it was because it's one of the two sets I was missing to compete my collection.   The figures and Smaug look great. The set itself?  It's no Helm's Deep.

I think the biggest 'sell' of this set for me is Smaug himself, but I dunno if I want to part with 100 USD for him. Almost better off getting a loose one from BL or eBay. Then again it appears he is being listed for about 50 dollars on BL. so maybe I will buy the set.

Smaug is easily the best Dragon Lego has done to date. Buy the set and when it is completely gone you could probably sell just the set without him for close to what you paid for it. He already goes for $67 alone.

Target needs to reboot their rumored "price matching algorithm". I mean, c'mon, it's been hours already!!

^ I typically go through the same justification if I only want 1 or 2 minifigs. Add up the BL price of them then see if it's worth the extra $ to buy the whole set and get all of the other pieces. More often than not I end up getting the set and am happy I at least got the pieces and extra minifigs.

The Lonely Mountain set aside for a second, I don't know if I even like the Hobbit theme that much to begin with. I totally enjoyed the LotR Trilogy so happily bought all of the LotR theme. But haven't been able to enjoy any of the Hobbit films so far, let alone like any of the sets considering they're all just little fragmented sets of locations and walls. But the voice of future regret has been whispering in my ear since the first word of EOL on LM was coming out of EU. So decided to complete the theme and deal with it later.

With that said, this Lonely Mountain is a horrible set when compared to most anything else at this high price point. The minifigs are all just 'armored' variants of existing characters, so would have been passable if not going for completion. Leaving the obvious Smaug as the only real selling point. It didn't make sense to buy him loose for ~$70 when for $34 more you can get the whole kit. Plus when looking for the set whole on eBay or Bricklink, there's no deals to be found. In addition to that, there's not many being listed at all, leading me to believe this will be a painful one to hunt down in the Afterlife.

So boiling it all down, left me with one basic question "If you collected Hobbit, could you live without having Smaug?"

^ #79003 being the exception, but yeah, for the most part a very disappointing theme.

Day late and a dollar short! Amazon price back up to $120. However, Target and Walmart both have it listed online for $103.99 today.

OOS at Amazon and being sold by 3rd parties now.

@BrickDancer I asked myself the same question given that it was the last LotR/Hobbit set I hadn't bought. I decided that no, I couldn't live without Smaug. Which led to the next question "could I live without a set that minus Smaug is not all that impressive?" In the end, the collector in me
won out. I have one theme 100% complete and this was the set that did it. Basically, I was helpless against the power of the brick.

Lonely mountain back on Amazon for 103.99 USD but with a note in stock on August 19th
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 998
It seems almost unanimous about how lackluster the set is and people are only buying it for Smaug (that's why I did it). I wanted blue coat Bilbo and Smaug. The set was boring (that whole part of the movie wasn't that entertaining). I agree on the movies being not good, especially compared to LOTR and it seems the sets followed suit.

I like getting new figures/prints and whatnot, but overall I own the movies and the sets and I don't understand why. I think I just WANT to like them more than my brain allows. I can re-watch LOTR over and over and I get excited seeing some of the figures in LEGO form, but I don't have that connection with the Hobbit.

With that said, I'd say pick up Smaug for sure. This is the best price I've seen it for and I'd hate to miss out. I picked up the set for full price at [email protected] this summer to get Winter Soldier because I was worried I was going to miss out on it since I hadn't seen any sales up to that point.

So i must be the ONLY person who enjoyed building this set.  In fact, if someone wants to pm, I might be interested in buying the bricks and letting them keep the mini figures and smaug. Wouldn't mind expanding out with another set or even two if the price were right

I thought it was an enjoyable build too.  Even if you don't like the structure itself you get quite a few sand green bricks which are rare.
  • DedgeckoDedgecko Member Posts: 798
They won't be very rare for long ;)

Consider that both Green Grocer and Haunted House are very sought after and you'll understand why the (49) 1x2 and (21) 2x4 sand green bricks are desirable.  It's also the only set that contains any sand green 2x2 and the only other set that contains 2x4 bricks.

I meant that if most buy the set for Smaug only, there will be a sudden glut of those sand green bricks on the market.  ;)

This is one of those sets I've wanted, but haven't yet pulled the trigger on, even seeing this discount, there's just other things I want more. I love the Hobbit theme, I thought they were really great sets, and still need to get a couple from the first wave to have the whole gang of dwarves. Great to see it discounted, hope to see it discounted even more before it's too late to get it.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting to see it discounted even more. It's possible, but you'd better be on it fast because if it drops much more online there will be a lot of competition to buy. At this point TRU is likely the only place outside of SAH that sells it in store.

Darn I actually saw this set at 20% discount 2 separate occasions at my local lego store. I wanted to wait to get paid before I bought and try to get another Pirate promo set. First the pirate promo set sold out and they said they wont be getting anymore. Now they are out of the Lonely mountain too and no other stores in my area have it either. Should have bought it when I had the chance...

I managed to get a hobbit lonely mountain cheapish 79018 @£75 - is it worth holding on longer or would you just sell it now? Given that amazon are selling it for £140 already ?
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
^Ask that question in the "Predictions" thread.

I picked up The Lonely Mountain as well, but I haven't opened up the shipping box. I am guessing the box is going messed up in some way. Ugh...
