Hit 4 stores in SE Michigan looking for the AC Defense HQ...been wanting that set for awhile, looks like a lot of fun. No luck though. Of course like a monkey gorging himself at the banana buffet, I couldn't help myself and picked up the following half off: 2 pyramids, 2 sphinx sets, 2 cursed cobras, 2 of the pharaoh planes, 2 kings carriage ambush, 3 HP burrows (nice looking parts especially for $30 per), the city yellow boat and truck combo, police boat and a ninjago set.

I did show SOME restraint and passed on lots of SW sets (lots of slaves, one hoth, couple freeco, few windu, etc) and Ninjago fortress and a funky looking skull truck. Also I left lots of sphinx and cursed cobra sets...just wanted 1 for each of the pyramids.

Yes, the police boat and city power boat transporter were both ringing up at just under $20 (50% off). Good luck!

Can anyone confirm whether the PQ Scorpion Pyramid is ringing up as $40 or $50?

Someone mentioned having one come up as $40.

@intromission - at two stores, they were $49.90 for me.

Mine was $49.90. I have a question. What does everyone plan on doing with their haul? I only bought the pyramid. I have wanted it since it first came out. The other 50% off sets either didn't interest me or I already bought them when they first came out.

Can people help out with locations? I live in San Diego, CA but currently on vacation with the family (It's killing me cause I can't freely check these sales!) in Sacramento/San Francisco.

I've been to 5 walmart's already! and can't find anything good, the last store I went to was really depressing cause everything and anything on clearance was gone.

I'm really looking for some Kingdoms sets and especially SLAVE I can't find it anywhere!

I did manage to get 1 extra Alien Conquest HQ so if anyone wants to trade in the Orange County area or San Diego area, let me know. I'd say trades in Norcal too but with the fam and everything i doubt I'll have time to venture far.

For those in New England: I was at the Salem NH store again this evening and they had at least 30 Slave 1's. No tax at $39. If anyone has an extra Hogwart's Express they are willing to trade via shipping, I will make the trip back up for 1.

I'm torn on the Pyramid at this point. I really can only afford like 1 or 2 more sets for the year after everything I've picked up recently (telling my son we open 1 a month only...haha) and have $60 in gifts cards to a certain big box store. I've been eyeing the MMV for a while. Maybe now is the time with the rumors I'm hearing. Already missed the Flagship unfortunately. Had it in my hands on Black Friday for $135 and got Hogwart's Castle instead (figuring my son would be able to play with that a little more.)

I'm in Raleigh-Durham, NC. If you know anyone out here, don't bother asking them to check the local Walmarts...they have all been cleaned out (and not just by me).

I was fairly successful in the last two days with finding items at Walmart. My big finds were the pyramid, slave ship and earth defense. Of those, I only grabbed the pyramid, but grabbed a number of smaller sets.

Just went out for my last purchase. Have to cut myself off @ this point. Searched and searched at this particular Walmart for a Creator house (customer service had 2 in store) but as much as I hoped to find it randomly misplaced, it didn't happen for us. Finding other sets scattered in random aisles only fueled the hunt. We looked for literally 45 minutes. One employee checked in back. I suspect there was some understocking going on, or they hadn't gotten around to updating the numbers at that store. Oh well, guess that one isn't happening because there is no stock anywhere else. Did get the Pyramid and scored one of the 1600 piece boxes that had been returned I guess for 15$. I thought it was a great deal when I got 1 for double that during Black Friday. That made me feel a lot better about the time I spent there. HaHa.

I went to a few Walmart in my local area (Home in Houston for the holidays). Even though driving around Houston Walmarts can be a painful, the haul was pretty worth it.

    5x 8097 Slave One
    6x 7868 Mace Windu
    10x 6918 Blacksmith Attack
    10x 7188 Carriage Ambush
3x 7189 MVR (one was badly torn, but it all appeared to be there)
    7x 4840 Burrows
1x 4841 Hogwarts Express (surprised to find one)
    5x 4737 Quidditch Match
1x 5891 Apple Tree House (Mom announced it was hers once I got home)
    10x 8083 SW Battlepack
    12x 8084 SW Battlepack
    3x 7066 AC Earth Defense
5x 2509 Earth Dragon Defense (lucked out - wanted it & almost missed it)
1x 3182 Airport (somehow it rung up as $39 - couldn't pass up on it

The only set that I hope to find but couldn't was the Ninjago Fire Temple, but didn't hold out too much hope anyway. If anyone has one to trade though I would definitely be interested.

There were boatloads of Dobby, a lot of 8085 Freeco, Plo Koon's fighter, advent calendar, the smaller PQ sets, some Ninjago small sets, and a couple of pyramids. Even at $50 though I couldn't pull myself to get more (have one at home). It's a nice set, but between space at home and wallet still had to "prioritize", even during a spree like this...haha.

Thanks Pacific493 for the heads-up. I work in Raleigh now and is coming back today, and was thinking of checking those stores out (Brier Creek/RTP area). Looks like I won't bother.

Some I'll keep (Kingdoms, 4181, a couple of the 2509s), but the rest I'll keep around either for trade, part out, or sell later on.

Does anyone know why some Walmarts don't have them half off. I found a lot of the above mentioned sets and they aren't discounted. I took them even to an aisle scanner to double check.
  • pcironepcirone Member Posts: 346
Me too.. all 7868, 4840, 4841, 3182 and others all come up at full price in the aisle scanners, is it different at the registers?

Wow... nice to see so many hoarders going to clear out Walmarts so they can sell them for retail (or more) on eBay and BL....
Thank god no one could show restraint and had to buy 10 slave 1's for example..
Sorry for Ranting and I know this comes up repetitively, but how much is too much???

Now I have bought to sell in the past so I get it, but I'm not certainly clearing out a store to do it.. I get a few here or there over a year using BOGO sales, or other sales that come up...
I mean it must be a great feeling of satisfaction of clearing out an entire LEGO aisle at a Walmart so no one else get get your 'precious' ', but I just do not get it...
Do we really have that many money grubbers on Brickset???
And please do not deliver the whole "oh I do it for my collection' line because who needs 10 Slave 1s? Or 10 Alien Conquest HQ's? Really? Your 'collection' will be sold off by June.

And to all of those hoping one of these guys will cut you a deal on the sets they so quickly gobbled up when finding out about the clearance sales... good luck, I do not see that happening (They make cut you a deal off of the retail, but make no mistake, there is a reason why these guys bought out a Walmart.. they want to make money off of the item) and if my comments all of the sudden changes that, great...

Yeah Yeah I know, the whole "if you do not like it do not read" and "People are free to buy all they want and then boast about their spoils" argument appears.. I get that, but with that attitude there will be very few people on the boards, except for the guys that will be competing either at stores or Online to see who can buy the most LEGO at a store and clear it out faster....
I view Brickset as having good information and I am grateful for that.. but what is the use of broadcasting a sale if a set group of people are going to use that information to completely clean out every Walmart they can find so no one else can get that deal?

Sorry for my rant, and I know I will get flamed by those preaching how'refreshing' it is to see these guys all clean out every Walmart that has a sale, or those trying to justify it ('Well they should be limiting us then or well that is tough luck if I get there first' or ' those who share are weak' etc), or their 'passion' for LEGO (their 'passion' is to make a buck, nothing more) but it just seems like this message board is being overtaken with money grubbing hoarders....

    End rant

    Just scouted my local Walmarts.

Everything here scanned at 50% off unless noted
    4x 7066 AC Earth Defense
    3x 7189 Mill Village Raid
6x 8484 Ultimate Build Lightning McQueen
6x 7326 Rise of the Sphinx
    4x 8639 Cars 2 Bentley Breakout
    8x 8638 Cars 2 Spy Plane Escape
    1x 7188 Carriage Ambush
    >12x 7325 Cursed Cobra Statue
    >12x 6918 Blacksmith Attack
    >12x 4736 Freeing Dobby
    >20x Star Wars Advent Calendar
    >12x Mace Windu's Jedi Starfighter (not discounted)

Things I didn't find that others here have:
0x 8097 Slave One (still need one)
0x 4840 Burrows (still need one)
0x 4841 Hogwarts Express (still need one)
0x 5891 Apple Tree House (still need one)
0x 4737 Quidditch Match (still need one)
    0x 8083 SW Battlepack
    0x 8084 SW Battlepack
    0x 2509 Earth Dragon Defense
    0x 3182 Airport

I picked up several of the MVR and AC Earth Defense and am willing to trade if anyone has been unable to find them at their locations.

It may be an inconsistency in that store's inventory system. After I got home yesterday, I realized that one of the Kingdom's sets that I had gotten for 50% at one Walmart had rung up at full price at another.

Sorry for Ranting and I know this comes up repetitively, but how much is too much???
For me, I stop buying when I reach the limits of my risk tolerance or storage capacity. Both have proven to be surprisingly fungible targets, so I can't give you a definitive answer. Also, the question of how much is "too much" will inherently depend on the individual you're asking...as your statement below indicates.
Now I have bought to sell in the past so I get it, but I'm not certainly clearing out a store to do it.. I get a few here or there over a year using BOGO sales, or other sales that come up...
So, it would appear for you "too much" is something less than "clearing out a store." For others on the board, "too much" is something greater than clearing out five stores. I'm sure for others, "too much" is something less than what you would consider "too much."

Personally, I do it because I like the hunt, I like the process of searching out sets for a good deal, I like the process of watching and analzying the secondary market to determine when is the best time to sell, and I like the process (and profits) of selling EOL sets on the secondary market. The fact that I am able to do all of that with a product that I have loved playing with since I was a little kid is just icing on the cake.

I found an AC HQ at my Walmart today! Yay! It was in the regular Lego aisle with a red sticker that said $89.97, but I knew better. So I scanned it and it was half price. Now I can return my other one to Target, if they take returns on clearance?

    And, no, I don't have a job :D

Wow - seeing the deals everyone is scoring today is incredible. As for the question of "why do this?" - I too like @Pacific493's answer:

"Personally, I do it because I like the hunt, I like the process of searching out sets for a good deal, I like the process of watching and analzying the secondary market to determine when is the best time to sell, and I like the process (and profits) of selling EOL sets on the secondary market. I grew up in a family of collectors, and those collections often turned into businesses. This is baked into the DNA of my family. For me, I sell dramatically less than I buy. But the hunt is fun, getting a deal is fun, buying loads of a set I really like is fun, building them is fun, funding the hobby assuages the guilt that I feel for spending so much on this hobby!

    Thanks everyone.

Now there's a go getter. But honestly why is it his fault that you weren't there at at 5am as well?

Are you also annoyed with people who camp out for BF deals that sell out in minutes so you cant wander in whenever you feel like it to buy it? Is this really any different?

I went back to my Walmart today and scored a Mace Windu that wasn't there yesterday. All in all I have grabbed a Scorpion Pyramid, Mace Windu, Freeco Speeder, and Plo Kloon. I am still wanting a Slave 1 ( there is one of them at Target, but only 15% off). There are still a lot of Freeco Speeders available for 12.40 and many of the Alien Quest, Ninjago, and Harry Potter stuff isn't marked down, unfortunately. Not scanning as lower cost yet either.

It's probably how he makes a living.

That having been said, shame on the retailer for not implementing a policy to prevent this kind of blatant profiteering; they're obviously in business to make money, but most retailers also place some kind of value on customer satisfaction and fair play, and there must be a fair few unsatisfied customers as a result of this....

I am Spartacus. ;o). I know how frustrating it can be to show up minutes after a cart loader and no, that cart loader, though friendly, did not offer me dibs. It's all good, though. And I too think @Pacific493 captured it perfectly.

I see it both ways. I would not wipe out a shelf or order a ton at once. However, I totally understand if it meant keeping a roof over your head or food on the table. There are so many people out of work right now that I do think some people do see it as a job.

  • brickupdatebrickupdate Member Posts: 1,020
I have found that this is all relative. That a "reasonable" adult collector who buys the last 3 battle packs, is thus not allowing a 9 year old to buy them with the money he saved up for months. EG: why did that adult collector need all 3 - why wasn't 1 enough?

Yes, the extreme cases - 15 carts - do tend to shed a harsher light on how far is too far. We all want to be rewarded for our efforts. Anyhow - I hope everyone on this forum got at least something they wanted this holiday season - there were certainly enough sales to go around!

For me, the Wal-Mart sale was the best - the one that had that great feeling of standing in a toy aisle and feeling like you can just grab anything you like.

    Thanks!

Sure - be it as a result of necessity or just good old-fashioned greed, some people will do whatever they can get away with, which is why it's up to the retailer to act as moderator. And perhaps if enough empty-handed customers complain it'll happen....
