Walmart Clearance

legogrrl4legogrrl4 Member Posts: 42
Not sure if other walmarts are having a clearance sale on Lego but my local Walmart in SoCal had a few sets on clearance. I got the  60036 Arctic Base for 64.00, and the Guardians of the Galaxy set 76020 for 30 dollars. There were also a few Ninjago sets on clearance too. So heads up maybe there will be more clearance sales coming to make way for the summer wave of lego.

That's earlier than usual if it's chain-wide. Walmart usually doesn't do the shelf reset for the Christmas season until late July/early August.

We are getting new releases for June though. Maybe just a little shelf space clearing for Agents, Jurassic world, Deep Sea Explorers, Space Port and Creator sets that were just posted on the front page as being released soon?   The arctic base is almost cheap enough for me to be interested.  (Almost)

Sadly the data BrickSeek is getting from Walmart these days isn't very useful to see if local Walmarts have those sets on clearance.  I see The same price for a set at every Walmart I look at. (The online price, not the actual store price).  Too bad, as that site was useful when it was receiving actual store prices. )

I'm waiting for the dragon castle set to go down to 50% off currently at 40

My WM has #31032 on clearance already (was just released 5 months ago according to Brickset).
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 1,016
I've checked my local wal-marts. They had a ton of clearance a few months ago (end of Feb, early March), but nothing since then. I guess they do have the Arctic camp for $84? I know it wasn't in the 60s yet. They also have the Mechdragon for $64 still.

One of my local walmart locations has had their usual clearance aisles usurped by garden stuff.

Instead they moved it all into a former-hair-salon between the two primary doors.  The problem is that, since moving stuff there, it all seems to have become damaged or opened.

Many of the LEGO clearance I saw was open-box or simply destroyed.

I saw similar items as the OP at my local Walmart.  Also had some SW Microfighters (X-Wing and TIE Interceptor) for $7 and #70144 Fire Lion $35 and #70143 Sabertooth Walker $30.

^ I saw the exact same sets redtagged with the addition of Agents #70164
  • RonyarRonyar Member Posts: 373
@GIR3691 I am guessing you meant #70808 for $35? (Which I've seen as well.). Otherwise Walmart is really gouging you on the double decker couch.  ;)
  • sonsofscevasonsofsceva Member Posts: 542

Wal-mart is so weird. The Agents Hurricane Heist was on clearance a few months ago for $15 and now, at the same store, it is on the shelf again for $64.

My local walmarts have had the Emmett Constructomech at full price for months, and it hasn't moved at all. I'm REALLY hoping that gets dropped sometime soon, but I don't see it happening.

There was a full endcap of Batman/Riddlers, Batman/Man-Bat, and Nowhere Escapes yesterday, but they looked like they were still at full price.

    YMMV...

The Wal-Marts near me don't have any of those sets period. Very odd what gets carried and what doesn't. It's also possible they just sold them all long before clearance prices were necessary, but I haven't seen any of those sets at Wal-Mart, but I have seen a few at Target (full price though).

    Spotted these last night.

    2x #70164 $49
    2x #79117 $74
    3x #60036 $60

There were also a couple of Series 1-2 microfighters for $5, but the boxes were totally smashed.
  • luckie_reubsluckie_reubs Member Posts: 299
There are PILES of Emmet's Construct-o-mechs at the Walmarts around here, but they just won't hit the clearance. I check frequently, and I'm really hoping I don't miss them.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 1,016
Back in February I found lots of clearance sets. I have yet to really see much difference in stock since then. The last Walmart I went to had a stack of the Ninjago Mechdragon for $64 (yet I somehow snagged one at a different Walmart for $21). But no other major changes in stock.

As far as the ^^ listed sets, Walmart did have those, but at full price still. Granted, I haven't been there in a few weeks.

I just find it interesting about what gets put on clearance where.
  • luckie_reubsluckie_reubs Member Posts: 299
Walmart is also really good about actually going through their stock and shipping things off. A set can sit stuffed behind Chima sets at Target for months, but Walmart checks and restocks their shelves so regularly that they can send off items that aren't selling to other stores with no problem. In other words, Walmart clearance isn't anything to quibble with. If you see it marked down, that's probably your best bet to get it.

I'd had luck with the Walmart iOS app in the past telling me what's on clearance and where, but lately the app doesn't even reflect the instore pricing, so that's been unhelpful.

I wonder if they're using the meta-data from the number of product checks via websites, apps, etc. and adjust the prices regionally.

Something has obviously changed, as online pricing is what often shows instead of the in-store price.  And once an item is marked as clearance, you can no longer order it via tha app for in-store pick up.   That leaves us back where we were, with driving to stores hoping they still have something in stock.  Not horrible if you are close by, but a pain if you have to drive around to multiple stores or long distances on the hope they still have something in stock.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,730
^yeah and several stores near me have removed most of their price scanners making it really frustrating to try check clearance prices.
  • goshe7goshe7 Member Posts: 515
^^ has anyone who could previously buy clearance online via the ipohine Walmart app had it stop working without updating the app?

I updated, and then I think it stopped working.  Wondering if I should pursue a rollback (yeah, I chose that wording on purpose) to an older version.

They have nerfed that functionality afik. You used to be able to do that with the mobile site. Not anymore.

Lucky! There are a few sets on there that I'd love to pick up at those prices. Other than Base Camp, all of those other sets are still full MSRP at my Walmarts.

I used the Walmart ap to locate ninjago city near me but instead of using the store look up, I looked up the item with the web search part.  Then, on that page, I looked up the item in stores near me and it showed the stores in stock as well as the price.
Another useful advice is to use that ap to get a price match at target or toys r us.  I found the arctic base camp but the store was like 21 mile away so I priced matched at target not expecting it to work but it did.  Then I did the same at toys r us and it work there as well.

I think the one caveat to that is that not all TRUs really look at those price match policies the same. Not sure about Targets, as I have heard people complain that the TRU would not honor something electronically, not even from their own site.

Must definitely depend on the toys r us as I never had a problem getting a price match using my phone.

^ According to their official pricematch policy, they allow you to use a smartphone, but you must be showing the website (instead of using an "app"):

    http://www.toysrus.com/shop/index.jsp?categoryId=11949070&sr=1&origkw=price matching

The original, complete competitor ad, with valid dates, must be presented at time of purchase. Advertisements presented via smartphone must be displayed on competitor’s website or app. Online prices must be verifiable via competitor website.

Target is real good about price matching but they have to do it with there tablet. I do it all the time mostly on baby stuff but I have done it with legos. If you are in target sometimes the have really good deals on there website that you also have to price match. You have to go to the service desk they won't do it at a register.

A few weeks back I managed to get #42022 Hot Rod for $20 in one of my Walmart's clearance sections.

I recently found a couple #31021 Furry Creatures for $15 at the same one. They also had #70005 Laval's Royal Fighter for $30, but I feel like it's been at that price at that Walmart for at least a year now.

Another one had #75074 Snowspeeder for $7, which was kind of surprising. I kind of wish I had grabbed it, but was really tight on cash that week (my cash flow will free up a little bit in about a month) and we were already putting like an extra $50 on my credit card that night to clean up the apartment before an inspection. Oh well, I'll grab it this Monday with the AT-AT to get the poster.

I've noticed that most Walmart's by me aren't necessarily clearancing any Lego out, but simply marking them with a red tag (which indicates they won't be getting anymore in stock).

I just hate the variability in walmart. One store has 3-4 base camps at full price and another clearances it to $50

    Me too.

I have to think they take into account the popularity of Lego in a region (purchased, shipped, picked up via WM bm or online), level of income, # of searches for a store via website portal (computer, tablet, or phone), etc.

I worked for WM for way longer than I care to admit, most of that as an Assistant Store Manager. There are some markdowns that come corporately, those you will see at every store at the same time (as soon as someone goes through and scans everything, that is).

The variable clearance prices are a result of human decisions. Each store has a monthly discretionary budget to spend on marking items down to make room for new merchandise. If your local store isn't marking down LEGO sets there is a reason.
I bet if you have a number of stores in your area that don't mark down LEGO sets, you will find that one of these three scenarios are happening there: low sales volume, wasted markdowns in other areas of the store (apparel, fresh food, sporting goods, electronics, and lawn and garden are the usual suspects), or store knowledge that LEGO markdowns are not necessary (because people that frequent that store are affluent enough to buy LEGO sets at full retail and not bat an eye).

My toy manager a while back said people will still buy these so they are slow to mark them down as they will sell eventually

Sounds about right. No reason to sell it for cheaper if someone is going to buy it eventually. If it warms the shelf until then, they aren't losing money on the deal. Especially when there aren't a lot of sets being released..

The Bay Area might be the worst place to find clearance with WalMart simply because of how affluent some areas are. When you go closer to Sac it starts to get alot better

    Found these as well:

    Star Wars AT-AT #75054 $79
    SuperHeroes Darkseid Invansion #76028 $49

7 Brick Bounties on shelf for $80 a piece... got nothing because all of them had damaged boxes. Holes, tears, and rips made me cringe. Apparently stock was damaged upon delivery and the clerk said they were going to put a lower price if none were sold so he said to come back next week and check. Nice guy with two kids so he understands the costly toys.
