Crazy Lego Thieves

Anyone else see this?

http://abc7.com/news/cops-bust-$100k-lego-theft-ring/778243/

They would just walk out with carts full of Lego.  Cops didnt find the "motherload" they were looking for.  They must have a storage locker or something loaded with the supposed $100K worth of Lego sets.

Eeek!

    "Legos" *sigh*  -_-

This is proof of how horrible people can be. Also interesting that they said LEGO has a high demand on the "black market." I'm sure what they meant was that the crooks would resell the sets for cheaper than RRP, but the way they phrased it has me picturing some shady characters trading drugs for LEGO in some fake alley.

that's kind of funny, the guys go in and out of the store multiple times with carts full of legos and no one notices it?

why are we so stupid to pay, when all you have to do is enter, grab what you want and leave?

  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,709
illegal, yes. wrong, not sure. it's probably not right nor wrong, but depends on economical choices, how a society decides to distribute its goods, so of course, under a capitalist economy which relies on profit and lucrative property, that would be considered wrong.

Wow...craziness! Some of the comments in this thread are the most astounding I've ever read in this forum. Simply put...relative morality is the key a ingredient leading to anarchy. Am I missing something here?

It's different, and I didn't talk about poor people. A shop is a place meant to distribute goods. My home isn't, you can't come and take what you want, even if you pay what it is worth.

Anarchy is only the absence of a power above everything else, it doesn't exclude any type of organization or rules.

Taking anything that doesn't belong to you for ANY reason is wrong, period. The golden rule applies every where. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

you must mean taking something that is the property of someone else.

I didn't say stealing was right btw

  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
And those goods in the store are the property of someone else. Its wrong to come take what you want from there just like its wrong to take it from your home

well, we're not on the same page, which I guess is normal since we're talking about a capitalist business, and I was thinking of other ways to define the property of means of production.

'Legos' was the first thing I noticed as well.

We had some Lego thieves that were involved in a high speed car chase.

So do they employ a security guard? If crooks are able to walk out with full trollies then the store seems at fault too.

^Aren't there normally alarms too that recognize when products leave the store? Someone who justs stuffs something in their pocket or under their coat could move quickly, jump in their car and be gone, but if these people were running off with cartloads, that must have at least taken a little bit of time to put in their car before they drove off. You would think there'd be someone to run after them.

Only certain products have sensors.  Most toys do not.

Most bigbox stores have learned that it is not wise/ is dangerous to confront thieves so it's not real hard to run out the door with unpaid merchandise. The best that can be done is to get a license plate number of the vehicle on the security camera and call 911. Often times there is a policeman in larger stores (particularly Walmart) that can react quickly but smaller venues like TRU would be pretty easy pickings.

A civilized society depends on the integrity of each individual. If that is lost with the majority, we will have anarchy.

that's what's weird, it sounds like the store didn't give a damn. they must surely check inventory and the amount of sales, so they would notice this kind of discrepancy before it reaches such amounts.
  • Lind_WhispererLind_Whisperer Member Posts: 65
It was both LEGO and Disney Frozen merchandise - the Frozen stuff probably hikes the dollar amount way up.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 1,015
I think the proper APA book states legos is the proper use. Even though LEGO themselves stated that it should be written as LEGO in all capital letters with no "s"

    Moose!  Deer!

Although I did see my local news telecast 'deers' recently.

I TiVo'ed it but nobody in my immediate family cared about the mistake.

Disgusting. Thinking I work a day job and work my tail end  off to buy my kids some nice toys and myself while others waltz in and steal. Thieves are nothing short of trash. I hope they get fried by our "judicial" system.

@Fauch Me? REALLY? Jealous is not the right word whatsoever. Are you saying I do not have the right to be mad at thieves and hoping they get busted? If you think I am jealous well you have another thing coming. I work hard and saying someone should get it trouble for stealing is not jealousy but a sensable reaction. I cannot believe that... jealous... ha.

I may have misinterpreted "hope they get fried", it didn't sound like a sensible reaction to me, unless you didn't literally mean to fry them.
  • BACbrixBACbrix Member Posts: 655
If you thought "fried" like electric chair then no. I mean to crack down on the criminals hard and not let them tip toe around the case by only getting 18 months and a fine.
    Omastar
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,709

    Let's all be too literal.

Can we turn this back into snide comments about criminals begin caught stealing or trafficking Lego?  (Legos... Legoes... Legeese... )

Yeah I thought they would understand the connotation of my message. But either way my point is what these people did was criminal and stealing is wrong but kids toys is a new low.

^^-They may have to though due to lack of drugs to give lethal injections.

As for these thieves, they should, and likely will, see jail time. However I am torn between seeing people 'get justice' and subsidizing someones free room and three meals a day for a prolonged period when an assault was not involved. They should also have to perform community service. Like go to schools and explain that they are thieves and it is wrong, and make them do it for like 3 years.
Shame, it seems, is the only form of punishment most people fear these days.

good idea, if it is well prepared. children aren't stupid, they know stealing is wrong, but there are obvious benefits. it is understandable that kids from disadvantaged areas may find it tempting, not understanding why they have so little when some other kids can have absolutely all they want.

  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,709

I dunno if people don't want to work, but they probably want to know that what they do is useful. if you work your ass off only to get everything taken away from you, you'll end up thinking, why even bother? and it seems it's happening to a lot of workers, we are asked to do always more efforts and are greeted by seeing our advantages disappear one after the others, because it will presumably save the economy (most likely after we will all be dead)

I have no idea why this guy would steal, though I would guess he paid his house with other people's works (or his profits in other words)

the value of money is a difficult subject, I would say it has no intrisic value. some people even consider money was created as a subtle way to plunder people. after all, how do you get people to work for you?

    Since we're talking about theft...

Reminds me of this crazy story: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/VP-of-Palo-Altos-SAP-Arrested-in-Lego-Scam-152320475.html

And this dude could AFFORD them but just wanted to profit at a price.

"Langenbach bought a $279 box of Millenium Falcon box of LEGOS"

He did what? Research please, reporters. -_- And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember there ever being a $279 Millennium Falcon. Still, what this guy did was unbelievable. I'm glad they caught him, but with the way security cameras are today, I'm surprised he wasn't caught sooner. And wouldn't the cashier notice a stickered on barcode where there shouldn't be one?
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,477
You'd be amazed what cashiers do and don't notice - If the sticker is over the existing barcode most would just assume it's meant to be there.

a friend of mine told me a story about how last year he paid for some stuff at tesco totalling about £3 with a £5 note, but needed a few 20p coins for a machine (I forget which one) and when he asked the cashier id he could have a couple of twenties in the change she actually handed him a couple of £20 notes. Being an honest sort he gave them back and corrected her or she could have been in some serious trouble when the discrepancy was noticed.
