^Do you mean because it's not quite level? I'm guessing that's because there's a minifig standing on one side of it?
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ Based on the first picture it looks like the pivot pins on the cars are "Tan Technic, Axle Pin without Friction Ridges Lengthwise" so they should pivot smoothly.  That yellow one at 10 o'clock looks tilted most likely because that minifig is off to one side and weighing it down.  Looks like the box picture is a built model and not a render but hard to tell.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
Maybe, but the yellow car opposite has a similarly positioned fig and it's not tipped the same.  Then again, there's always the possibility that I'm merely speculating irresponsibly in a vacuum of information.

It's definitely a photo. Most box images these days are actual photos. Architecture, Bionicle, CMFs, and Mixels do use renders, though.

Bigger than I thought, looking forward to this one.

So about 4 inches more than I said.  Usually it's the opposite.

^^At the North Carolina State Fair even the Ferris wheel is temporary--although it's a pretty good-sized one, larger in scale than this Lego version.

I'm looking forward to the designer video for the Ferris wheel to see if there are some surprises in store!

Yeah hurry up with the designer video! I assume this is one of Jaime's?
  • PlellPlell Member Posts: 192
I'm told the designer video and press release will come out this Friday.

    Can someone help me think:
I need to buy the Mixer first. Do I wait until the Retro Minifig thing in July (which is a rumour, but seems to be true) or buy it now without any additional free sets but being on the safe side?

What would you do? Buying it now (next week or so) or waiting until July?
I don't want to risk it selling out.

I went ahead and bought one the day the Ferris Wheel was announced. Surprisingly the wife really loved the look of the Ferris Wheel and thought I should get it. No argument from me! :)

I still think, and maybe this is the entitlement talking, that for 199.99 USD, power functions should be in included to make it spin by itself.

Still looks great and I'm likely getting one. Will probably wait until they have some polybag giveaway though to help me justify the cost. Of course, maybe they will put out a polybag for the release like they did with the Mixer and balloon cart when it came out.

The model and design itself looks great however the colour scheme feels dull. I really like how Jaime has as made the feature of turning the entire Ferris Wheel. It's a pass from be simply because I prefer detailed display models for me it would have to be an outstanding display piece like the Grand Carousel. It looks as if LEGO are going for a different approach with these Fairground sets; direct to consumer playsets with plenty of accessories and playability rather than being outstanding display pieces. It's not something that screams purchase me!

Ill definately be getting one once I can manage a good deal. Its a great looking set and I love the mixer. For me ferris wheel has the feel of a proper Lego set.

I think this'll make a nice standalone set, even with no other lego near it. Especially if power functions are added and it sits and goes round and round. To me, it is totally different to the mixer. I can see people wanting this as a one-off over the mixer. But then the mixer never really did it for me. Too much truck and not enough fairground. I'm glad this one is a static one, with no truck.

Now I have to figure out how to add some LED lighting to the Ferris Wheel (and the Mixer too). I mean, what are carnival rides without neon lights?

The mixer seemed like a jumble of stuff everywhere and it was a great set for kids but this is an amazing display piece, can't wait to get one!

All of the above completely echoes my own thoughts.
I'm not sure if I will get it, but my thought process is the above. I could see just getting this as a one-off, without feeling the need to purchase the mixer as well.

^Until a Roller Coaster is released. Then (right or wrong) the completists out there will be paying through the nose to get the Mixer (if it is gone by then). The Town Hall modular building is a great example of this...

^My hunch is the reason a Roller Coaster is later in the series is that it will require some new pieces (and corresponding molds). I can't wait either!

^For just a display model I can easily come up with several solutions but to actually make it go round would be extremely difficult as you have mentioned. Hope we get it soon.

In other words, pretty much the same direction they've been taking almost all of their large D2C sets:  EV, Sandcrawler, Mixer, Ferris Wheel, Modulars.  Really only the Tumbler and the Mini are what I would call a "model".  Slave 1 displays great, but it's a hybrid playset at its heart

#10220 T1 fits the model category along with the Mini.  Love those two together.

It is a shame that it doesn't use the battery box from the Power Functions Motor Set (8293), since it uses the M-Motor, but I suppose that box would be a bit unwieldy in a set like this.

I quite like it from the video actually...

Ditto - the mixer did nothing for me, but after seeing the video this looks like it'll be moving to the top of my 'to buy' list. And the (UK) price isn't quite as bad as I had feared...

This is a definite purchase from me. But I'm probably going to wait until there's some sort of free set too, not least because I have no free space or free time at the moment.

But I think it's a fantastic looking set.

It's listed on Lego S@H U.S. now. I will definitely have to pick this up now and maybe the mixer too now.

    @Farmer_John or this one

It's in Pripyat Ukraine and just before it was to open in 1986 the Chernobyl incident occurred. It has featured in a couple of computer games including Call Of Duty. Maybe Jamie is a bit of a gamer.

Aren't most fairground ferris wheels pretty similar? Which is why this one will do well, most people can relate to it.

And that is one problem with the mixer, this type of ride is not that standard. There are many different types of whirly spinny attractions at a funfair.

I would agree, but it's lit up like a Christmas tree. If it's truly solar like Santa Monica is bragging, then they have to be using some form of energy storage to light it up.

^Nice find to match up the new Ferris wheel with the possible inspiration found in the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel in Santa Monica. I was already tempted by #10247, but now it's a must buy after realizing this.

The Pacific Park is actually powered by both Solar and Wind power, first and only Ferris Wheel in the world to do so. The solar panels are not actually on the wheel itself and is instead roof mounted on the loading building near the Roller Coaster and Arcade. So the battery for storage is not necessarily part of the wheel itself. On a cloudy day, it runs off of traditional power generators. The current wheel is the 2nd version, the old one was built in 1996 and the new one went up in 2008 on Memorial Day.

I've been thinking about the Ferris Wheel...it's a fascinating set with so many opportunities. Here are few of my thoughts:

    • First, a tip of the hat to Jamie for this set. He did a great job!
    • I'm sure Jamie had part limit constraints (i.e., keep it under $200, etc.), but there's no doubt his design allows for expansion into a much larger Ferris Wheel. In fact, it may be possible to double the size of the Ferris Wheel to 24 buckets by using two sets. If so, then I would expect many people to snap up multiple copies (just as I eventually plan to do).
    • There are some simple, inexpensive, and attractive mods that can be added to this set. For example, it is possible to place additional multi-colored translucent pieces on the new transparent spokes. Also, you can add more variety to the color by changing out sections of the white ring, although they would have to be opaque; not translucent.
    • I am probably going to try adding another white ring (or some other color) around the outside of the wheel. It looks like it will take some other mods, but I think it will look better.
    • On a tangent, it's interesting that this set has 12 buckets. One idea it gave me was to make a large analog Lego clock by gearing the motor or (more simply and accurately) using a Mindstorm to control the time-keeping mechanism.

So many possibilities...I can't wait for this set to be released!

Although the colors are different, it looks like tweaking this set to match up with the one in Santa Monica should be pretty easy and inexpensive.

Yeah, most Ferris wheels have this, and I agree.  Plus, it'll make it look even more substantial.

I'm open to the idea as it is only one photo, but it looks like a Knex set with minifigures on it at the moment. I will wait and see what it looks like once advertised and reviewed.
Forget my comment, having seen the extra video and picture, I love it. The only issue now is a] how do I find the money and b] how do I tell the wife?
