^  I have transported Lego all around the world and if you want to keep all of it in nice condition for the ride home in suitcases, my advice is:  1.  Double bag the pieces (ziplocs work nicely), 2.  Flatten the boxes for transport (although, a Tower Bridge box... that might be a bit unwieldy regardless!) and 3.  Instructions should go separately in a folder in your hand luggage.  Thus, my conclusion is, if you're gonna do all that anyway... why not build?  Just my experience, of course! :D

Just finished this little beauty, really enjoyed it. charming little build.

Its been a while since ive built a average size set, is it now the norm to end up with so many spares?

^ Not quite had that many spares from sets I've built, but better to have spares & a complete build then be short a few pieces... Have had that issue with a few sets recently, worst is when you have a few spares & realise that a couple of those were meant be a different part. Best example would have to my Comic Con Luke's Landspeeder, got an extra silver 1×2 grate instead of a tan single stud 1×2 plate...

All of the 1x1s and Technic bits are typical spares. The 1x2 jumpers, hinge plate, and 1x3 tiles are definitely uncharacteristic as extras. If I were you, I'd go back and check the part callouts at every step for each of those parts.

Started in on #10937 last night. Love the prison truck and the entrance way. The gate's nice, but I'm not a fan of standalone bits like that (same with the one in #10228). Looking forward to finishing it off - or at least making a dent in it - tonight.

About to start building the custom Edoras set. I've had the pieces sitting in a big box for well over a year now. Finally have some available space that I will be able to display it.

^Glad you finally have the time and space.  Thanks again for the heads up on the reddish brown arches, I was able to get them before they got too spendy.   If you don't have enough Uruk-hai, you might rent @samiam391 's army. ;-)

Thanks @klatu003 :) No problem about the arches. Excited to finally get around to putting it together.  Sounds like @Samiam391 is amassing quite an army :) Fortunately I was able to pick up a whole bunch a year ago when the prices were somewhat reasonable (~$2-3 each).  I'll save those for the complete Helm's Deep build though (can't wait for the next 2 parts!).
  • samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,505
@Renny - Enjoy! *sigh*... that's what I should have done. I'm a fool to have waited so long. Even though I don't plan to build helm's deep for a year, I wanted to make sure I picked them all up now.

@klatu003 - I've stopped buying... spent to much money on them! Once they all come in and I build Orthanc I'll post a picture. As a "fill in" moc until Kevin finishes Helm's Deep.
  • klatu003klatu003 Member Posts: 729
@samiam391 - Your Orthanc is going to get dusty.

@samiam391, yeah prices are starting to get out of hand for Lotr army building.  I can't believe how much Rohan soldiers are going for now. I bought around 25 last year to put on the Helm Deep walls with plans to get a lot more later on but forget about that now :(
  • samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,505
    @klatu003 - Unfortunately, you're right :(

I have hopes that perhaps a year or two from now, the instructions will be complete and I'll be building...

@Renny - Rohan soldier prices are absurd... I was able to get quite a few in bulk deals, but not enough to make the fight look "fair".
  • RennyRenny Member Posts: 1,145
Look at the bright side, Helm's Deep was never a fair fight in terms of army size so it's actually more representative of the movie :)  I'm going to be using a mix of Rohan soldiers, the CMF series 3 Elves and some Kingdom/Castle kids/old men/blacksmiths to man the Keep (along with the heroes).

I built #70163 yesterday. I was actually pretty impressed with it in terms of build, parts selection and details. I liked the stickers too, most of which I kept on the sheet for possible later MOC use. Good minifigs too. I think it was the pick of the bunch of wave 1 Ultra Agents. Of course it helped I picked it up nearly 50% off from Argos :-)

@Supertramp You have defiantly missed some steps; I have it built and I didn't have that many spares.
  • scrumperscrumper Member Posts: 317
@SuperTramp assuming the offside door isn't hanging on only one hinge that must be an accidental extra. The 6 jumper plates might belong under the engine (page 8, book 2). The other steps using them are pages 19 and 24 in book 1 and page 10 in book 2. The tiles are used on pages 10 and 23 of book 1.

Very well done on the Hulk. Looks great. Especially love how the hands slim down to attach to the arms like a real mini fig. Good work

Nothing right now, but I finished Vladek's dark fortress a few days ago. Was amazed by how huge it is, even my arkham asylum breakout or kingdom Joust look ridiculously small in comparison. Also, if it counts I made the minotaur collectible minifig yesterday.

Kinda of a special build for me this week.. my last set on my want list from my dark ages #10189 Taj Mahal. It is bicklinked and the final result is spectacular. While I can understand the build to be boring, bricklinking it made it less so. As it is composed of dozens of smaller builds coming all together at the end, I was building what I could with each received package/order over the past month.

Now hunting for display furniture :)

The Taj Mahal is a beauty, definitely something I will bricklink in the future. I remember seeing them on eBay a couple of years ago incredulous at the price haha....oh well...looks beautiful coloradobricks :)

Which pieces were the hardest to obtain via Bricklink?
  • ColoradoBricksColoradoBricks Member Posts: 1,659
@77ncaachamps there is not really difficult pieces to get, I used some different mold variation for the 6x6 dish, 1x1 plate with clip. I used different colors for some of the hidden technic pieces like the technic 6x8 & 5x5 brick in LBG and Black instead of white and yellow.
The problem is the quantities of some pieces, they are available on BL but not in quantities required, I turned to B&P / PaB for those and a few others cheaper with LEGO than BL (like base plate, windows, etc)

now I have to track down a SDCC Micro-Scale Bag End & some of the retired Modulars
The Micro-Scale Bag End is really easy to bricklink (unless she really wants a repeat figure AND exclusive box). But the set itself is really easy. I built one with pieces I had on hand. Just to fyi.

Working on my Parisian! Last modular I have until we order the DO. Love them so much!!

Latest  projects where I built both the mine and first night as accurately as possible from parts in my collection. I added 5 mini figure skeletons and the 2 free creepers to the mine. Next project might be to take some of the left over 2 x 3 bricks I have in LG and DG so I make a simulated creeper explosion hole.

@LostInTranslation have you watched it yet? I've been trying hard to avoid spoilers until we get it released here tomorrow. But did finally find a Hulkbuster set and that was a very satisfying build yesterday in the $30 range.

^The tile between the 'eye' slits is in a different place in the middle one! Is that intentional?
Such a tiny thing, but somehow the first thing I noticed...which says more about me, really...

I went against my "never buy Star Wars" rule and bought the Tie Fighter. After that, I'll pick up the X-Wing and that's it. I hope.
