Dare I throw away the box?

Does anyone ever feel guilty for throwing away Lego boxes, especially old ones?  I have boxes or covers to these sets:

-588 (1978)
-6375 (1980)
-6382 (1980)
-6383 (1980)
-6081 (1990)
-6277 (1992)

I just have a hard time throwing them away because there's always that "what if".  What if the its valuable or what if someone else has been searching for one of these for forever and I throw it away?  It's almost like throwing away an "ancient" artifact.  Anyone else feel this way?

I collect Lego, not cardboard so I feel no remorse in throwing away boxes. I dont even really have enough room for the Lego so keeping boxes is completely out of the question for me.

I don't keep any boxes if I can avoid it. I might if I was mad enough to keep a UCS model sealed for years in order to resell and make a few quid a few years later, but I don't. I love LEGO, building, MOCs, and helping my children with their building and MOCs, and if I have a set unopened, I want to open and build it (which makes storing sets for Birthdays / Christmas etc very difficult!)

I know that there is a market out there for boxes (just look at Bricklink) but it doesn't interest me, so I guess each to their own. If you feel guilty for doing it, then maybe you should not do it, but then in the wider scheme of things, there are worse things in life to worry about!

Id try to sell them first. On the 588, there are none currently listed on Bricklink but 8 people want one. Same for 6375.

I throw away the small set boxes.  Boxes from the big sets get all tape cut so i can flatten them.  They then go in a large plastic bin. only takes up about 3 cubic feet and have well over 100 boxes in it.  Im only keeping them to give to my daughter when I kick the bucket.  She may want to sell them later down the road for some cash.  Resale value is higher with parts, instructions, and box.

Off topic but I sure do miss those old legoland town sets.  Lego used to be so liberal with their inclusion of road base plates in sets!

The bigger boxes are perfect to put all the other cardboard recycling in.

I kept the box from a large duplo train my nephew got for festivus 2013. He could not remember opening it (he was 2 1/2 then) so I dug out the box and he said he could remember now (I don't know if he really can mind you). I wish someone had kept all the boxes from my first sets.

@durazno33  I would keep those, they are valuable. If you don't want them, send them to me, I'll pay the shipping.

I would say to sell them either on eBay or Bricklink. If you put them up someone is always looking for them, but they have to be a complete box usually; not just the cover. Heck if someone wants to pay you for the box ( or even cover), shipping box, and shipping fees it really is free money if you were going to chuck them anyway. Just ensure you ship them in a shipping box so an entire vintage box does not get crunched or destroyed (seen too many brown shipping paper jobs from others).

^ I´d prefer Bicklink. You hardly find box sellers on ebay so you´ll hardly find box buyers either. People on Bricklink are more often looking for something extremely speciafied: parts, minifigs etc... so why not boxes? Give it a try and if they won´t sell well, at least you tried and you can throw the boxes away with a clear conscience.

I have a huge stack of boxes I've kept ever since I got back into LEGO (late 2010). I have no use for them. I look back and wish I had my childhood boxes still, but I don't care about the random box as an adult collector. However, I can't bring myself to throw them away either...why is that?

I'm going to assume that you are not familiar with Bricklink since I don’t think you would have asked your question if you were. With that assumption, if you go ahead a list them, the 8 people that are looking for that box (588 for example) will get a notification that one was listed and you should get immediate interest and a possible sale. If it sits for a month or two with no action, throw them away with a clear conscience like Tar said. It costs nothing to list on BL and they can set there forever with no fees until you sell (which is a paltry 3%).

I would pay good money for those boxes. Unfortunately, I'm in Europe. But like others said - sell them instead. You'll get quite a lot of money for them on Bricklink.
