http://news.yahoo.com/lego-takes-skylanders-disney-infinity-115913380.html Here it is. Leaked a little early but I at least am excited. Not sure of all the details, but it looks like to some extent LOTR is not dead as it will be a part of this game.

    $99 ~coughs water all over the keyboard~

I guess the extra is for the 200 odd lego bricks, but wow that feels expensive (for contrast Disney infinity 2 was down to £22 4 months after release). Glad its TT though, they at least know how to make a good LEGO game.

For the minifig collectors out there are you going to have to collect the game ones glued to a base as well? What if they're unique?

^I'm wondering if the bases (that have the microchip or whatever) will be more like minifig stands, with detachable figs. Would make sense from a production point of view. But I'd imagine at some point there will be unique figs released.

Looks cool, though obviously we haven't seen much real gameplay.  Btw, Infinity and Skylanders is regularly $70+ in the US, though you could get them on sales (like Black Friday) for $40.  I would expect the same with this.  This will likely be competing with Infinity 3.0, which will include Star Wars characters, so it's going to be a slugfest.

My biggest question is around the interoperability with characters and worlds.  My biggest gripe with Infinity was the fact that many worlds were only open to a very select few characters, and those that had no world of their own (e.g. Elsa, Baymax, Jack Skellington, etc.) could only play in the Toybox.

^I thought I'd see what other intellectual properties Warner Bros owns http://www.warnerbros.com/studio/divisions/consumer-products
and I wonder if we could also expect to see Harry Potter, Scooby-doo and other Hanna-Barbera characters pop-up.

The HP and S-D stuff seems like a no-brainer as they already exist in lego form.

EDIT: Though it does seems it won't be limited to WB material http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2015/04/09/warner-bros-to-launch-lego-dimensions-video-game/

This article (linked to in the comments on the frontpage) seems to confirm a wizard of Oz, and unique minifigure http://www.polygon.com/2015/4/9/8376101/lego-dimensions-release-date-back-to-the-future-wizard-of-oz

This could get expensive for those die-hard collectors... (or should I say more expensive).

I'm kind of annoyed at this being a toys to life game...it looks to be the Lego video game I've wanted since first playing Lego Star Wars back in the day. Having to pay for extra characters really annoys me, its just money mining. The fact that it implies some need for physical building is interesting, but I suspect that all the reader is going to be reading is a chip on the base, i cant see how they could have a system that reads each brick.

Getting minifigures from stuff like Wizard of Oz is interesting - i thought Disney held the IP for Wizard of Oz, so surprised by that.

I'm going to remain skeptical for now, Lego is enough of a money hole as it is.

Smyths taking pre-orders.  There are some great character sets available.  Not sure about the price of the dimensions but definite purchase for my little one.

Yep.  I was severely disappointed in Disney Infinity for this reason alone.  My son was uber excited about getting it for his b-day and now barely plays it a week later.  It's sad because it appears to have been designed by the same company that did the excellent Toy Story 3 game.  In that game you had a very well done story mode and a Toy Box (sandbox mode).  One of the best games I've played in recent history with lots of value.

These 'add-on' games are a rip-off unless you get them for $40 or less.  You're basically paying for the portal technology with the expectations that you will spend another $100 or more on the figures.

@Shib ; Yes, the bases are clearly visible.

@Plell ;I'm surprised that the stuff attached to them isn't glued though, particularly the mini models - could be troublesome from a gameplay point of view if you dont know what each thing is.

@mathew the toy box is the best bit of Disney Infinity though and I can see how allowing any character in the story modes could cause some problems, especially if they weren't pointless.

This will be a great way to get more licensed figs that are too small for a set.

I somehow doubt that they will do minor characters that we don't already have. The press release are all existing characters, with the exception of the Wicked Witch.

The bases seem to be printed, so presumably matching them up is easy.

Yes, it could get expensive.  Especially if these are released like the Nintendo amiibo characters - where some are only available as pre-orders and sell out within an hour.  Hopefully they don't make that mistake.

It wouldn't surprise me if the minifig base is they key part for the game, and the other one is just be a "blank" that works with any game and brings up the vehicle / extra for that character. Although that would mean you cannot get Legolas to ride in the Cloud Cuckoo Car.

This is what seems to be available so far:

    Level Packs
    #71201 Marty MyFly, DeLorean, Hoverboard

    Team Packs
#71207 Cole, Kai, Boulder Bomber, Blade Bike

    Fun Packs
#71209 Wonder Woman and Invisible Jet
    #71210 Cyborg and Cyber-Guard
    #71212 Emmet and Emmet's Excavator
#71213 Bad Cop and Police Car
    #71214 Benny and Benny's Spaceship
    #71215 Jay and Storm Fighter
    #71216 Nya and Samurai Mech
    #71217 Zane and Ninjacopter
#71218 Gollum and Shelob the Great
    #71219 Legolas and Arrow Launcher
    #71220 Gimli and Axe Chariot
#71221 Wicked Witch and Winged Monkey
#71231 Unikitty and Cloud Cuckoo Car

Based on the numbering, it looks like there could be another DC character or another TLM character (#71211). It also looks like Unikitty might be a retailer exclusive since it is separate from the other TLM characters, and there is a lot of room between the Wicked Witch and Unikitty for other characters. It wouldn't surprise me if every major retailer gets their own exclusive for this. It will be interesting to see what the other level packs and team packs are. I fully expect a DC team pack.

Based on the prices at Amazon.uk, these seem horribly overpriced for the LEGO included. Obviously, there is game content, but wow. £14.99 for a minifigure and micro-build? And I thought CMFs were ridiculous. I hope for LEGO's sake the price in the US is $14.99 and not ~$20.

Looking at the picture here it looks like the minifigure bases are printed so hopefully the minifigs themselves are normal in every way but the bases connect to the device.

Seems logical. Its a common spot for big games to launch, summer families tend to want to promote more outside activities. Launching in september lets a bit of word of mouth get around for the christmas push.

Its in line with other toys to lIfe. The cost is in the bases with the readable chips in them - it is too much for me though.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,332
They're normally available for about half price though. They do appear to be a couple of £ more than Disney infinity across the board though.

Wonder if all of these figures in these packs are Chinese produced?
  • GreendudeGreendude Member Posts: 58
The cost is not in the bases, it's in the profit.  Compare the beautiful disney infinity figures with lego.  No comparison.  Quality and size are clearly better for Disney.  Disney's are new moulds too, Lego's aren't...aren't we always told the moulds are why Lego is so expensive?  TLG could have easily packaged chips with Lego sets and CMF or even sell them cheaply on their own for people to pair with already owned minifigs.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,332
They do need to make a profit and there are three partners here, Lego, WB and TT. That's at least one more than Disney infinity have.

$14.99 for the "Fun Pack," which is a minifig and a mini-build.
$24.99 for the "Team Pack," which is two figs and two builds.
$29.99 for the "Level Pack," which is one minifig and two mini-builds, plus an in-game level.

This micro-transaction, day-one-DLC stuff has gotten way out of control. For $100 you should absolutely get a complete game, not have to pay hundreds of dollars more for "bonus content." I guess the minifig stands are chips that you can scan to add that character to the game, or get power-ups, or whatever. What a ripoff. I want that BTTF hoverboard, but I'm not paying $29.99 + tax just to get it.

Wizard of Oz? I know people will be happy to get official figs, but IMO they really had to scrape the bottom of the license barrel to try and compete with Skylanders/Infinity/Amiibo.

It's also weird that the Oz screenshot shows minifig flying monkeys, but the "Fun Pack" has a brick-built monkey.

I would have gone crazy for a remould of the classic pirates monkey.

I'll be interested to see which way the aftermarket goes with these sets. I imagine people there will be people buying the sets for the fig and try to recoup some of the cost by selling the chips, equally those who want the chip to play the game but either have the fig (eg Gandalf) or just want to recoup the cost so sell the fig.

(Gandalf is probably a bad example here, maybe cyborg is a better one. Will a parent want to fork out another £15 just for their child to be able to 'play' a fig they've already acquired through a large lego set purchase?)
  • AanchirAanchir United StatesMember Posts: 2,802
That's a good question. When the LEGO Ninjago spinners came out, I remember many people buying them for the figs and accessories and then selling the spinners for dirt cheap, even though they were probably the most expensive part of the sets from a production standpoint. I don't think we'll be likely to see that this time around, at least not yet — other than Unikitty and the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wave 1 figs are pretty much all pre-existing figs that can be gotten for a much better value if you're not interested in the game chips.

On one hand, I'm a little disappointed that this isn't being exploited as an opportunity to create new Ninjago figs (like for instance, Nya in the costume she wore in Season 3 when she wasn't in her Samurai garb). But on the other hand, I imagine there'd be a lot more whining if the figs in these sets were more exclusive!

A lot of people are here just for the Minifigures and bashing it base on price and new figures. As a gamer I think this is just awesome. We all knew that a skylander type game was coming but I was expecting generic characters along the lines of the Minifigures series. I wasn't even expecting license characters in and themes, so when I saw it, I was impressed. Not only that, they are model that you can build and brought to life. Whether or not if you can create your own ideas remains to be seen. It does look like there will be coss play and the characters are not lock into their own world aka disney infinity so that is a plus. As for price I'm sure there will be plenty of day one promo like syklanders..

I'm excited, both as a Lego fan and a fan of these type of video games. The sets are not outlandishly priced compared to similar games. Bonus: You get minifigures and sets to build.

The site shows the worlds we know of so far but says more brands will be revealed soon. My guesses would be Ghostbusters, Scooby Doo, and Simpsons based on what others have mentioned above.

Regarding the pricing for these things, the thing is that they are ALWAYS on sale without fail. Starter packs frequently 30-50% off and accessories frequently at various levels of BOGO, or with free gifts with purchase, etc. This game will be no different. Looks like a ton of fun, but that $14.99 price for the basic accessory packs if $3-5 too much, IMO. But it wouldn't shock me, for example, to frequently see them at, say "3 for $33" or "2 for $25," etc.

It looks interesting. My only concern is what has happened to the Amiibo line. I'd hate to get into this only to find myself having to pay 3-5x retail price for some expansion. Nintendo has really dropped the ball on that in my opinion. I would be curious to see how this one turns out.
  • matticus_bricksmatticus_bricks Member Posts: 648
Well, my thoughts on this are that LEGO has finally decided to take over the world. They've had the means for awhile now, having legions of devoted fans all over the world, and now they've tapped into another toy market that is really hot right now. As long as the price doesn't deter people, and there are good sales, I think this will be a hit with everyone. Hopefully the minifigures will be detachable from the bases. That Wicked Witch is basically the best thing ever. I'll be buying one for my sister who is an Oz fanatic!
