Sets where buying multiple copies makes the most sense.

Seeing Huw's article about buying a second DO to fill it out made me wonder: what sets out there are made more complete by buying 2 (or more) copies? I know of a few off the top of my head - the Kingdom's Joust set, Battle at the Black Gate, and Horizon Express (of course, the argument could be made for any train of course).

I received a 2nd Mos Eisley Cantina for Christmas, and decided to keep it after realizing it looked a little sparse the way it was originally constructed. It also allows for the full array of band members, of course.

Any other good examples where buying and building with multiples made the finished product a great improvement? I'd love to see pictures too!

    I have 2 Minecraft 2118 The Mine sets. They combine easily to make a huge rail system and a in fepth mine with a plethera of ores and an abundance of mobs. Great post!

    I turned a pair of #60047 Police Stations I got on clearance into a corner modular not too long ago. One of these days I will get around to taking and posting pictures of it.

    That sounds really cool, I'd love to see pictures! I kind of wish that the DO was more like an honest to goodness police precinct, instead of the mishmash of a barber shop, detective's office, and pool hall. Don't get me wrong, I do LIKE the DO set, but sometimes it seems like they crammed too much into a smallish space.

    I'm pretty sure #41005 Heartlake High is modular in that the rooms can be stacked to make a second floor or connected side-by-side to make a larger ground floor. A second set would be useful to make a larger school.

    A second copy of #75005 Rancor Pit would be useful to create a full bottom level for #9516 Jabba's Palace.

    Multiple copies of #9471 Uruk-Hai Army are useful when combined with #9474 Helm's Deep to create a more realistic Deeping Wall.

    Grand Emporium is an obvious candidate for extra floors, although sadly no longer available at retail.

    Just about any building is under-built in Lego. They always compromise to keep the cost and/or complexity down. Every house, school, shop, etc, could be improved if it had twice as many pieces. The Haunted House could be larger. The Creator houses could have kitchens and bathrooms. The police station could have more walls. Many buildings are just a facade. So go crazy. Buy two of everything!

    I would say 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army. It's a great modular wall section, and I bought three to make a really nice Elf fort. It's also a great army builder, including three generic elves and two orcs.

    We buy two of a lot of the sets, especially the modular ones, the bigger Friends items, like the houses and boat, and the bigger Star Wars ones. We did buy two Mos Eisley cantinas also, and made it into one big set with all the band members and a much larger bar, plus get the door in a better spot. I think I bought 3 of those now that I think about it.

    Any sort of "army" set is a natural for buying multiple, and made specifically for that purpose. The interesting ones are sets that weren't necessarily meant to be bought in multiples, but are.

    Hogwarts - #4709, #4721, #4842, shoot...any of them - sounds like a set that would definitely fit this thread

    7595 Army Men on patrol is a natural for buying multiple copies. I own 26 of them. Changed out the heads and hands to yellow.

    Arkham Escape, Ewok Village, Unexpected Gathering, Hogwarts, and Goblin King Battle all come to mind.

    Most 3 in 1 creator sets too, if you want to display them all.

    The forest animals monkey looks good if you have two or more.

    #60026 (for making a bigger bike / pizza shop and having a fleet of buses), #60036 for making a bigger base station are two recent sets I can think of.

    Otherwise I agree with @piratemania7 - you never know when you just might want a spare sealed set of something - anything...!

    @binaryeye I've seen a lot of people who have bought a second rancor pit to extend their palace but I think it is one of the most pointless sets to buy an second of. To make it bigger you only need to add a couple of bricks and plates to each side.

    It is a much better option (IMO) to buy a second palace as one is very small.

    Here's mine - 2 palaces, 1 Pit + some extra bits and pieces.

    I saw rancor pits in -40% sale so in that case it might not be a bad deal to buy another.

    Not strictly speaking an army-builder, but additional copies of #76025 Green Lantern vs Sinestro is vital for MOCing additional members of the GL and Sinestro Corps. :-)

    The best example I can think of is the #3731 Pumpkin. The single-set model is unimpressive, but if you order two, you can make a cool 3-dimensional pumpkin. The polybag included instructions for the two-set model.

    I say buy duplicates of anything you want. Personally, I buy duplicates of anything I find on sale at 50% off or more. Doesn't happen often, but when it does (and the money is available), double up :cold_sweat:

    ^ I used to find quite often sets with great discounts - but I had them already. So nowadays my motto is "never buy lego if it doesn't have a discount".

    Yeah, if you live by that motto, don't count on ever getting most of the exclusives anymore (in the U.S. anyway).

    Fortunately I live in Finland where are a lot of lego discounts or unfortunately I live in Finland where legos are 25-50% more expensive than in the US - It depends on how you look at it.

    Spongebob pineapple house, as it is only half a house in lego interpretation! Features in more than one set so its possible to avoid duplicates.

    Funny, I thought of that one too once, thanks for reminding me! I do have two different versions, I think the most recent two. So it shouldn't be that hard to combine them into one big pineapple. Also, Squidward's house is begging to be made much bigger, as is the Krusty Krab.

    Yes, and you can't simply look at price vs. exchange rate. For what I pay in family health care costs (not including dental or vision), I could buy about 30 modulars per year at the prices shown at [email protected] Finland.

    You are lucky, I'm on the worst plan on "Obamacare" with a small subsidy and I could buy 45 Modulars a year.

    We have high taxes here in Finland and living is not cheap. But my comment was never meant to be debated I just meant that you only see the view where u live.

    I purchased multiple copies of the council of Elrond set. It seemed too small with just one set and am hoping I can build a better representation of it.

    One of my fellow AFOLs bought lots of #7327 on clearance, so he could build a full pyramid. Don't think he has yet, but it'd be cool........

    #3843 Ramses Pyramid - have about 20 for the tan base plates (if only we knew) but the bricks are great for adding to tattooine MOCs, plus the boxes are pretty good for storing parts.

    I got a several of the #3843 as well, just for the tan baseplate. I ended up with a ton of the #3855 just cause I got them super cheap (like $3.50 each). It also has a smaller tan baseplate. I will probably just use them for parts as they don't really sell that well.
