Meanwhile, the pirate ship is one of the largest the LEGO Pirates theme has ever had. Only three other vessels in the LEGO Pirates theme ever had higher piece counts than it: #6285 Black Seas Barracuda, #6286 Skulls Eye Schooner, and 10210 Imperial Flagship. I don't generally see "brightly colored" as a negative quality in a LEGO set, but even if I did, the colors of these sets are no more brightly-colored than any previous LEGO pirates sets have ever been (excluding the licensed Pirates of the Caribbean sets, of course). In fact, I'd consider the 2015 Pirates sets some of the LEAST brightly-colored LEGO Pirates sets of all time, since back in the late 80s and early 90s sets tended to use a lot of colors like Bright Red and Bright Yellow where today's sets use more subdued colors like Dark Red and Brick Yellow (Tan). Only The Brick Bounty seems any more brightly colored than its forerunners.
The backdrops for the sets are brightly-colored, but they always have been. I do have to say I prefer the blue skies of these new sets to the hazy orange and indigo skies of older LEGO Pirates sets. I feel like it creates a better sense of adventure upon the open ocean. Can't really argue with that, since it's just a subjective opinion. But unattractiveness has nothing to do with whether a set is juniorized. Something can be incredibly complex and have a lot of effort put into it and still be horrendously ugly, just as something can be utterly simplistic and still be aesthetically pleasing. Personally, I think the new sets look beautiful.
If there's one thing that bothers me about them it's not their size or aesthetics but their QUANTITY. Sure, they include many of the most essential subjects for a LEGO Pirates theme, but there are still only five sets. I hope there are more in the summer, because that would help fill in some of the gaps in the current lineup, particularly the lack of a large Imperial vessel. Truth be told, it wouldn't surprise me if there ARE still more LEGO Pirates sets to come, simply because there's a conspicuous gap between the price points of #70412 and #70413 as far as piece count and price point are concerned. It'd be odd to have one set at a very high price points and a bunch of sets at lower price points with nothing in the middle.
Interesting tidbit my brother mentioned to me which he read on another site: #70409 Shipwreck Defense can link up with #70411 Treasure Island. Note the clip on Shipwreck Defense and the handle at the end of the pier on Treasure Island. Likewise, there is a clip on #70410 Soldier's Outpost that lets it link up with a handle on #70412 Soldier's Fort. That might explain part of why those sets are so small — each is a part of a larger scene. Nifty!
I look forward to getting prices for these sets. Given that they don't use as many giant wall panels, baseplates, and mountain bricks as many older Pirates sets, I think they should probably have better prices than some of those. This site has what appear to be reliable euro prices, and since the usual ratio for USD prices is $1:€1, I expect it will be 10 dollars/euros for 70409, 20 dollars/euros for 70410 and 70411, 35 dollars/euros for 70412, and 100 dollars/euros for 70413. In that case, 70412 is the only one that looks particularly overpriced compared to the 2009 Pirates range.
@Aanchir, I agree with you about the detailing, I think the problem some are having with these sets however is how similar they are to the '09 sets, with most if not all having direct analogs. It doesn't feel like a continuation but a re-do.
In the last, LEGO has taken previous designs (see Garbage trucks, Dump truck, Fire Station, Police vehicles, construction vehicles, etc) and made them better, but these look like a new low.
As for comparing 1788 with 70410? I would suggest comparing that outpost to something comparable to the lines of the past, like #6265 Sabre Island. This new set look positively silly compared to it IMO. As for the part count.. I dunno where LEGO gets that 164 but they must be primarily 1x1 somethings.
Heck take the new outpost ( #10412) compared to even the one in '09( #6242 - which was not very impressive either IMO). Look at both and tell me that LEGO did not cut corners here with the new set.
Now it IS possible that the price for the latter sets will be cheaper and not the same as the comparable former sets, but I have a funny feeling that LEGO will make the new outpost as the same as the 09 one (50 USD), but even if the set is cheaper I much would have rather LEGO make a detailed version of these sets (at least a couple of them) and charge a bit more. It is really like the designers barely tried with some of these, or were hamstrung by a lack of funds from the production heads, I dunno. But I would say if you are going to do a Pirates line, commit to it and do four really awesome sets with a ship for the first run and not what they are producing here. Maybe this is a toe in the water type of deal where if it gets a good reception then they will make better more detailed sets I dunno.
As for these, the only good thing coming from these sets IMO are the figures and the dark red 1x2 brick with masonry pattern.
I'm happy to see a return to the "Classic" Redbeard and there are a few unique elements I can't wait to put my hands on.
So does that seem to fit the popular opinion - March 1st release?
The first thing I noticed was a blue life boat for the ship. I'm wondering why they didn't go with brown? I doubt pirates spent their spare time painting the lifeboats. Oh well, it's a ship so it's a must for me to purchase at some point.
The other sets appear to be redos of the last Pirates theme rendition. Nothing too creative, but I am glad the theme's back.
Color-coding the dinghies by faction is nothing new. In 1989, when the Pirates theme began, the Pirate dinghies were Earth Orange (classic brown) and the Imperial dinghies were Bright Red. Over the course of the 90s this pattern was broken in a handful of sets, but when the theme was rebooted in 2009 it established the current color-coding (Earth Blue for Imperial soldiers, Reddish Brown for pirates).
Incidentally, I'm now noticing something I have mixed feelings about — neither of the Imperial dinghies has an Imperial flag. But each does use a lantern, which is also a decent way to signify their allegiance, since they're the same type of lanterns as on all the soldiers' fortifications (and which are nowhere to be seen on the pirate vessels — pirates, being a sneaky bunch, perhaps prefer the cover of night).
I also was observing something the other day. I think it would be very neat if LEGO would some day release an octopus with printed 1x1 round tiles for eyes! I do love animals with printed eyes! It makes me happy that LEGO is now introducing printed eyes for sharks, sawfish, and alligators. I'd love for the octopus, monkey, and parrot to one day get similar treatment. If "humans" (i.e. minifigures) have printed eyes, I see no reason why animals should not, especially on an animal like the octopus where adding them would be pure simplicity!
Cheers,
Ole
There are a handful of bricks and specialty pieces in each set that I would love to have, and thats what TLG does, intentially makes sure they divvy up the riches this way so that you buy the whole lot!
A majority of the bricks in each set I think are simply "bulk bricks" - I am beginning some of the latest sentiment above.
I'll still pick up one of each set - perhaps two ships as that is clearly the stand out in this release and go from there. But I am certainly not as excited as I was a few months ago.
However, as I do own some older pirate ships and the PoTC sets, I'll be picking a few sets up (mostly for figs, cannons and whatnot, to populate my other pirates range ships and PotC sets). Though I much prefer the sets and desert islands from earlier years. In fact i was hoping they'd bring back the sloped beach/island base plate as i missed that one.
But can't say I'm a fan of the printed eyes on the alligator/crocodile. It makes it look a bit too Peter Pan for my liking... I much prefer animals to have non-humanised features, to retain that animal nature and give off that sense that you can never quite trust them to behave as you might expect. With cartoon eyes, they become a bit too cute and disneyfied for me.
...and those bl**dy automatic emoticons keep screwing up my computer, so I accidently left the smiley off.
Or this guy:
The builds on the rest aren't spectacular but there's so many usable elements that I want multiples to cobble together something myself.
I definitely needed the ship and it will grow from there.
Pirates are huge with kids at the moment. Jake and the Neverland Pirates and on the Cbeebies there is a show called Swashbuckle, my three year old cannot get enough of it, he has all the Jake sets.
I'll be getting all of these at some point, seems expensive for parts per piece, but it seems to be following the current trend of "Tesco will want to half price these at somepoint so lets inflate the RRP", I'll be waiting for a 3 for 2 at least.
Has pricing been released for these yet?
Perhaps the range will run for a few years and some additional sets added in each year.
Would persuade me from trying to buy up some of the olders sets if a new line was coming soon
Wish it was my birthday allready.....
They fit well by my other pirate sets...
I think the requirements for becoming a new member on here need to be a tad more tight.
At any rate I digress - why would someone buy this off eBay from you again when it's all available at retail in less than 3 weeks? And I don't know about the rest of the world but here in the US you can already order all this off of Amazon....
