I don't entirely see WHY these don't appeal to AFOLs, to be honest. Certainly, they're the same sort of subject matter as in the 2009 Pirates sets, but the designs themselves are very different. And the idea that these are "juniorized" confuses me to no end given the intricate detailing present in many of the designs.

As an AFOL, the sets look juniorized and unappealing to me for the following reasons, however subjective:

    1. The sets generally appear small and/or appear to have required little effort to design (I interpret this as Lego being cheap and/or lazy)
The sets are indeed fairly small, but that doesn't mean that they require little effort. Not by a longshot. #70410 has only a slightly higher piece count than a set from my childhood, #1788, but I think anybody would recognize 70410 as the more elegant design. Sure, 1788 was larger. And it was larger in part because it used a bunch of giant single-piece mountain bricks, wall panels, and battlements, rather than putting its pieces towards more intricate brick-built details. Keen attention to detail is the exact OPPOSITE of laziness — a lazy designer would have just used a bunch of giant wall panels and mountain bricks the way imperial forts and outposts have always done in the past.

Meanwhile, the pirate ship is one of the largest the LEGO Pirates theme has ever had. Only three other vessels in the LEGO Pirates theme ever had higher piece counts than it: #6285 Black Seas Barracuda, #6286 Skulls Eye Schooner, and 10210 Imperial Flagship.
    nkx1 said:

    2. Although the sets might have some details desirable to some (such as rock formations), other more prominent attributes such as bright colors and half-finished appearances overshadow any positive attributes

I don't generally see "brightly colored" as a negative quality in a LEGO set, but even if I did, the colors of these sets are no more brightly-colored than any previous LEGO pirates sets have ever been (excluding the licensed Pirates of the Caribbean sets, of course). In fact, I'd consider the 2015 Pirates sets some of the LEAST brightly-colored LEGO Pirates sets of all time, since back in the late 80s and early 90s sets tended to use a lot of colors like Bright Red and Bright Yellow where today's sets use more subdued colors like Dark Red and Brick Yellow (Tan). Only The Brick Bounty seems any more brightly colored than its forerunners.

The backdrops for the sets are brightly-colored, but they always have been. I do have to say I prefer the blue skies of these new sets to the hazy orange and indigo skies of older LEGO Pirates sets. I feel like it creates a better sense of adventure upon the open ocean.
    nkx1 said:

    3. The sets are unattractive and cheap-looking. That's the general impression I get when looking at these sets.

Can't really argue with that, since it's just a subjective opinion. But unattractiveness has nothing to do with whether a set is juniorized. Something can be incredibly complex and have a lot of effort put into it and still be horrendously ugly, just as something can be utterly simplistic and still be aesthetically pleasing. Personally, I think the new sets look beautiful.

If there's one thing that bothers me about them it's not their size or aesthetics but their QUANTITY. Sure, they include many of the most essential subjects for a LEGO Pirates theme, but there are still only five sets. I hope there are more in the summer, because that would help fill in some of the gaps in the current lineup, particularly the lack of a large Imperial vessel. Truth be told, it wouldn't surprise me if there ARE still more LEGO Pirates sets to come, simply because there's a conspicuous gap between the price points of #70412 and #70413 as far as piece count and price point are concerned. It'd be odd to have one set at a very high price points and a bunch of sets at lower price points with nothing in the middle.

Interesting tidbit my brother mentioned to me which he read on another site: #70409 Shipwreck Defense can link up with #70411 Treasure Island. Note the clip on Shipwreck Defense and the handle at the end of the pier on Treasure Island. Likewise, there is a clip on #70410 Soldier's Outpost that lets it link up with a handle on #70412 Soldier's Fort. That might explain part of why those sets are so small — each is a part of a larger scene. Nifty!

I look forward to getting prices for these sets. Given that they don't use as many giant wall panels, baseplates, and mountain bricks as many older Pirates sets, I think they should probably have better prices than some of those. This site has what appear to be reliable euro prices, and since the usual ratio for USD prices is $1:€1, I expect it will be 10 dollars/euros for 70409, 20 dollars/euros for 70410 and 70411, 35 dollars/euros for 70412, and 100 dollars/euros for 70413. In that case, 70412 is the only one that looks particularly overpriced compared to the 2009 Pirates range.

^Wow, that's quite the reply- thanks for taking the time to type all that. Everything I stated was effectively subjective and simply my opinion. As the saying goes: opinions are like ________, everyone's got one. However, in this case, my opinion matters to Lego (in an astronomically small capacity) because I will not be buying the sets! I'm hoping the next wave (if there is one) will be improved, but I'm not overly optimistic based on the first wave.

@nkx1, just for the record you weren't quoting me but Aanchir.

@Aanchir, I agree with you about the detailing, I think the problem some are having with these sets however is how similar they are to the '09 sets, with most if not all having direct analogs. It doesn't feel like a continuation but a re-do.

I think we have to think of the target market here ... kids haven't had pirates for 5 years. Kids aged probably 4-12 will like the sets - it will be something most of them have not seen in the past.

Is Pirates really still a thing with kids? My son is only two so I haven't had a chance to observe this myself yet. I would think that it would have same problem as the Western themes at a certain point though: As time moves on, those types of themes have less relevance during playtime. I could be totally wrong here, but I just don't see your typical 5 year old picking Pirates over Star Wars Rebels, Spiderman, etc.
Yes for pirates, it is still big for kids. I guess i have taken our kids to 25 pirate themed parties over the past few years.

No for western / cowboys though.
That's because Disney/Bruckheimer failed with the Lone Ranger. Had that movie shared the same success as POTC 1/2...

Sets seem to be out 1 March 2015 according to UK S@H.

I agree with @nkx1 . IMO these sets are cheap looking and unimaginative. If you look at any of the pre 09 Pirate sets (heck even the 09 sets themselves) they have MUCH more detail and action instilled in them than these, hands down. Coupled with the fact it looked like LEGO took the 09 sets, and scaled them further back to spend less money on them.
In the last, LEGO has taken previous designs (see Garbage trucks, Dump truck, Fire Station, Police vehicles, construction vehicles, etc) and made them better, but these look like a new low.

As for comparing 1788 with 70410? I would suggest comparing that outpost to something comparable to the lines of the past, like #6265 Sabre Island. This new set look positively silly compared to it IMO. As for the part count.. I dunno where LEGO gets that 164 but they must be primarily 1x1 somethings.

Heck take the new outpost ( #10412) compared to even the one in '09( #6242 - which was not very impressive either IMO). Look at both and tell me that LEGO did not cut corners here with the new set.

Now it IS possible that the price for the latter sets will be cheaper and not the same as the comparable former sets, but I have a funny feeling that LEGO will make the new outpost as the same as the 09 one (50 USD), but even if the set is cheaper I much would have rather LEGO make a detailed version of these sets (at least a couple of them) and charge a bit more. It is really like the designers barely tried with some of these, or were hamstrung by a lack of funds from the production heads, I dunno. But I would say if you are going to do a Pirates line, commit to it and do four really awesome sets with a ship for the first run and not what they are producing here. Maybe this is a toe in the water type of deal where if it gets a good reception then they will make better more detailed sets I dunno.

As for these, the only good thing coming from these sets IMO are the figures and the dark red 1x2 brick with masonry pattern.

I think the only set i'll grab is the ship, the rest look too much like toys and less like building sets. Not really a complaint since Lego is intended to be played with, but I wish they'd see that just as many adults buy Lego as kids and cater to them a bit more.
  • mrseatlemrseatle Member Posts: 410
I like the new sets, and may grab a few of them, but will agree the new ship looks just like Brickbeards Bounty (one of the first non Star Wars or Space sets I purchased). If I find the new one on sale or clearance someday, I shall add it to my fleet.

I think much can be said about any set that many of us have yet to see in the flesh.

I'm happy to see a return to the "Classic" Redbeard and there are a few unique elements I can't wait to put my hands on.

So does that seem to fit the popular opinion - March 1st release?

What are the thoughts on the soon-to-be-released Pirates theme? I love the pirates themes (especially the ships), and am wondering how they'll compare to the previous releases.

The first thing I noticed was a blue life boat for the ship. I'm wondering why they didn't go with brown? I doubt pirates spent their spare time painting the lifeboats. Oh well, it's a ship so it's a must for me to purchase at some point.

The other sets appear to be redos of the last Pirates theme rendition. Nothing too creative, but I am glad the theme's back.

The other sets appear to be redos of the last Pirates theme rendition. Nothing too creative, but I am glad the theme's back.

The Earth Blue dinghies in #70411 and #70413 belong to the Imperial soldiers, not the pirates. The pirate dinghy comes in #70412 and is Reddish Brown, same as their ship. It makes sense that the Imperials could afford to paint their dinghies considering they're the wealthy faction whose treasure the Pirates are aiming to steal.

Color-coding the dinghies by faction is nothing new. In 1989, when the Pirates theme began, the Pirate dinghies were Earth Orange (classic brown) and the Imperial dinghies were Bright Red. Over the course of the 90s this pattern was broken in a handful of sets, but when the theme was rebooted in 2009 it established the current color-coding (Earth Blue for Imperial soldiers, Reddish Brown for pirates).

Incidentally, I'm now noticing something I have mixed feelings about — neither of the Imperial dinghies has an Imperial flag. But each does use a lantern, which is also a decent way to signify their allegiance, since they're the same type of lanterns as on all the soldiers' fortifications (and which are nowhere to be seen on the pirate vessels — pirates, being a sneaky bunch, perhaps prefer the cover of night).

I also was observing something the other day. I think it would be very neat if LEGO would some day release an octopus with printed 1x1 round tiles for eyes! I do love animals with printed eyes! It makes me happy that LEGO is now introducing printed eyes for sharks, sawfish, and alligators. I'd love for the octopus, monkey, and parrot to one day get similar treatment. If "humans" (i.e. minifigures) have printed eyes, I see no reason why animals should not, especially on an animal like the octopus where adding them would be pure simplicity!

Lot of words, lot of shit sets, imho. I may be wrong, but lets see what these 2015 (and those 2009 sets) will be priced at @‌ BL compared to the '89-'96 sets in the following years

    Cheers,

    Ole

As the dawn of these sets draws closer by the day I grow more skeptical. I think the minifigures are a huge win - especially for a Pirate fan as myself. However, generally speaking I am seeing TLG tilt more toward focusing on minifigures than the actual build itself these days in oh so many sets!

There are a handful of bricks and specialty pieces in each set that I would love to have, and thats what TLG does, intentially makes sure they divvy up the riches this way so that you buy the whole lot!

A majority of the bricks in each set I think are simply "bulk bricks" - I am beginning some of the latest sentiment above.

I'll still pick up one of each set - perhaps two ships as that is clearly the stand out in this release and go from there. But I am certainly not as excited as I was a few months ago.

I feel that's a bad way to judge them, as the collecting mentality is quite different now than it was. Collecting Legos, and the hobby in general, was different. People didn't buy sets back in they day to resell like they do now. Now some people buy multiples just to sell, which didn't happen as often then. So, BL prices really aren't always the best measure of a sets value or worth.

As a stand alone line, I'd probably find these a bit weak as they arr(gh), and probably wouldn't have been enticed in by them if i didn't already own a Piratey collection from years gone by.
However, as I do own some older pirate ships and the PoTC sets, I'll be picking a few sets up (mostly for figs, cannons and whatnot, to populate my other pirates range ships and PotC sets). Though I much prefer the sets and desert islands from earlier years. In fact i was hoping they'd bring back the sloped beach/island base plate as i missed that one.

But can't say I'm a fan of the printed eyes on the alligator/crocodile. It makes it look a bit too Peter Pan for my liking... I much prefer animals to have non-humanised features, to retain that animal nature and give off that sense that you can never quite trust them to behave as you might expect. With cartoon eyes, they become a bit too cute and disneyfied for me.

I have slightly mixed feelings about the alligator/crocodile. As I said before, I LOVE printed eyes on LEGO animals. With that said, most of the time I prefer those printed eyes to be a simple "dot with sparkle" like a typical minifigure. I can definitely tolerate more detailed cartoon eyes (like on the crocodile, or most LEGO Castle dragons), especially in themes like Legends of Chima where that kind of detail is inherent to the character designs or to the theme's visual language. But generally I don't consider them ideal for general LEGO.

To me the only thing great about this line is the Pirate ship and the red 1x2 Masonry brick. Likely get the ship on sale, and 1x2 brick via parts direct or BL (hopefully they will appear on a PAB wall)
  • blarghiflarghblarghiflargh Member Posts: 99
I want everything EXCEPT the ship. The ships take up so much room that it really has to be cool or unique for me to clear the space, and this ship isn't that.

The builds on the rest aren't spectacular but there's so many usable elements that I want multiples to cobble together something myself.

I'm curious how modular these are. In some of the pics I see the builds have a "1x2 plate with right-angle" (sorry, I don't know my part numbers that well) dangling off the far end of the build. That seems a hokey way to string them along. The Castle series had the technic pins / 1x2 holey-bricks to make the sets snap together, much like your typical modular sets.

The theme looks great, I have to admit I'm comparing it to the first wave in 1989, and all I had was the Clipper.

Pirates are huge with kids at the moment. Jake and the Neverland Pirates and on the Cbeebies there is a show called Swashbuckle, my three year old cannot get enough of it, he has all the Jake sets.

I'll be getting all of these at some point, seems expensive for parts per piece, but it seems to be following the current trend of "Tesco will want to half price these at somepoint so lets inflate the RRP", I'll be waiting for a 3 for 2 at least.

Any rumours of more sets being added in the second half of the year. Thinking along the lines of larger pirates & soliders bases, or even a ship for the soliders.

Perhaps the range will run for a few years and some additional sets added in each year.

Would persuade me from trying to buy up some of the olders sets if a new line was coming soon

So disappointed with this line. Simply a palate swap for the minifigures and a rehash barely redesign of the sets from 2008/2009 line. Nothing new or amazing to stand out and if anything this wave is too small and barely eqyipped with enough minifigures. Uhhhh soo sad to see the Pirates image tattered by this junior looking lineup. Perhaps they will correct this line in another 7 years...

As am I looking forward to a few pieces to add some diversity to my extensive pirate display. I will probably pick these up do to my need to collect every Lego Pirate Set but certainly am reluctant due to the numerous number of sets arriving this summer. I do very much enjoy the aspect of connecting the two imperial sets To make a largish fort. I will always miss the classics. The Imperial Trading Post was a masterpiece and currently it is my prized possession to have both a built and sealed version. I do sound like a pessimist but it is hard to enjoy the newer generation knowing I have a classic collection that is more cleverly designed.

It's not the best. No way. No how. Nothing compares to the days of BSB, Imperial Trading Post, etc. buuuut at least we have a new official line of Pirates. The minifigures look good and there are some really unique pieces scattered throughout each set that I am looking forward to procuring.
I agree, and I don't think anyone is going to argue about the new ones compared to the sets of old. But, we do need to keep in mind that it's been almost 6 years since that Pirates theme, not counting POTC, and maybe they are trying to gear it towards younger kids. The Imperial Flagship was their shout out to adult fans I think.
