It seems like the less socioeconomic ones will have more options as Lego is pricey, but they also can have some pilfered and beat up boxes.
Actually, I totally just went to a ghetto Walmart and I can actually verify that yes there were indeed a lot of higher end sets and almost nothing under $20-25
And there were also a ton of beat up boxes
I did manage to find 2 LotR Weathertop sets marked 60% off shoved back behind the Friends sets of all places
I don't collect LotR really but I had to grab them for the parts alone
No wonder the theme is ending (also because of the movies ending).
Looks like they found some Daily Buggle sets in the warehouse but even marked down to $40 I wasn't moved to buy. Maybe for $30... I did pick up a couple more Series 13 minifigs and a really nice sterilite container.
Granted, I don't make it to Wal-Mart very often. It's just too far out of the way for where I travel. Unfortunately, Target is nearby. I say unfortunately because they seem to be more expensive on most things...
I like the ship
I picked up my copy at Target and got the 5% red card savings on top of the price match.
70145 Ice Mammoth $64
76021 Milano $54
And there were stickers for TMNT Big Rig Getaway for $49 and Highway Cruiser for $9, but no sets.
Before leaving though, I searched around for a clearance section/table. I found one that had some random LEGO on it. At first glance, it was the fake-clearance that WM is so known for. You know, sets with red price stickers on them showing full retail price. I picked up a few anyway to scan them and sure enough, full price.
BUT WAIT -- THERE'S MORE! There was also a WM employee (management, I guessed with a glance) with a price gun and a scanner going over some of the items on this clearance table. She probably saw me frowning at the entire "clearance" situation and asked, "Anything I can help you with?"
Me: Well, I'm interested in some these LEGO sets but the red stickers on them reflect the full price.
Her: I haven't made my way down to those sets yet. Is there anything particular you're interested in?
Me: (grabbed one of the 2x #60036 - Arctic Base Camp - that were sitting on the table)
Her: (scans it) Yep, $90. How does $25 sound instead?
Me: (poops a little) Sure, that would be great.
Her: Ok. (slaps a $25 price sticker on there)
First time I've ever encountered an employee with actual power to just up and change a price like that. Was exhilarating.
Someone has asked me to post a pic of the base camp with the price sticker in hopes that they could get their local WM to match it. Seems a bit unlikely to me, but can't be any less likely than a WM manager with a price gun practically giving LEGO away off of the clearance table! So, good luck. Here's your pic.
You just jealous you're not a patched member:
I will admit, you do have me wondering what a "major thread" is though...
