Your rarest Lego item?

This is the oldest set I have:
4030: Cargo Carrier

Not sure what the rarest ones are. These little promotional ones I have seem like they'd be kind of rare:
1560: Glory Glider
1561: Stunt Chopper
1562: Wave Jumper
1563: Track Blaster
Those were the first Lego sets my dad gave me when I was really young. Some other rare poly bag ones I have would be the McDonald racers too.

Some that are worth a lot that I own would be the Millennium Falcon and the Statue of Liberty.

The rarest I have are probably two sealed promo sets from the late 1980s: a sealed #1484 and a specially packaged Danish Red Cross version of #6523.

And while not "rare," I own a sealed #6394, and that set is, in my opinion, the greatest classic LEGO set.

There are several that I can think of that would be considered "rare" even though the term is heavily over used. You just have to remember that Lego sets weren't always "mass" produced even though there are other sets that sell for a lot more money. Rare isn't always desirable.

Set #742 which was made for the U.S. but the sets weren't sold in the U.S. and only 16 are owned by members.
Set #726 owned by only 40 members.
Set #722-2 owned by only 15 members.
Set #721 owned by only 30 members.
Set #720-2 owned by only 34 members.

I could gone on but you get my point.

There are quite a few in existence, many of them fake. I remember bidding on one once (probably not his though) and I was way off the high bid, but got a second chance offer within 30 minutes of the auction end. There were at least five people in front of me. I assume every got offers, so he could get rid of as many as possible quickly.

*(On a side note, does anyone happen to know the names of the six employees who worked under Ole in 1932? I've done some research but to no avail.)

Mine would likely be my original Black Seas Barracuda. Built back in 1989 with my dad and is one of the last good memories I have before my parents separated.

My 'pride any joy', and probably hardest to find (though not all that hard, nor all that expensive in the grand scheme of things) is my #1237 Asimo Robot, made as a promo for the Honda 21 Open Fair. Still boxed & sealed.

My rarest pieces / set I have are 1/2 the pieces form the 1976 set excavator and truck and also the 2 original figures and most the pieces from the 1976 police van and motorcycle. These were my first 2 sets when i was 3! I still look at them at times and it puts a smile on my face.

$1500? Sheesh, I wish I'd bid on it now! From my vague memory I think there were about 3, all incomplete, or just the heads.

But to add to this thread, I have since been generously given a red wizards hat (prototype I believe) that has completed my lego wizard hat collection!

I was talking the Town Hall, its not rare Pitfall, get over it, most of the items in this thread weren't produced at the same level the MOD's were. Not one item in this thread is newer than 25 years old. Im sure the Town hall in 2045 will be rare too.

Out of personally curiosity how do you know that it's a Lego yo-yo? None of the photos I've seen of legitimate Lego yo-yos have a logo on them. I've seen a few on eBay and been offered a couple over the years. But there doesn't seem to me to be any way of telling who really made it other than the seller's assertion that is was. Without proof to me it's just an old wooden yo-yo.

I'm not at all sure about rareity and value of what I own.
I know I have all the original Pirate sets (including ships), Forest Men sets, and Lego Space.

I also have the San Diego Comic Con minifigures of Green Lantern, Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!), and Bizarro!

I have the instructions and parts for set 313 London Bus released in 1966. I probably inherited it from someone in the family as I was born that year!! Also have several sets from the early 1970s in bits

On a philosophical note isn't "rare" simply in the eye of the beholder? Are we talking rare as in TLG only made so many pieces/sets or rare as in something so special and irreplaceable that only that particular piece/set fits the bill?

I don't know if it's rare per se, but the oldest 'set' set I have is 107-3 "Reversible Power Unit" from 1968. In terms of something that I actually 'value', I have a pristine 6000 "Legoland Idea Book" with all stickers intact. Love that book :)

After much searching I finally found my rarest Lego item, #760. There is no picture in the database but only 6 people including myself own a copy and I do have the red and blue drawers that came with it. Unfortunately it's not very desirable.

Probably not rare, but I have a few of the red (1x2) Lego bricks that have the word Lego stamped and printed on them. I say stamped because they feel slightly imbedded in the brick.

I also have several of the minifigures that didn't have arms but just bumps on the side of the torso and legs that were just a solid piece. A plain yellow head to top it off.

I let my boys play with some of my older sets, but after a few broken pieces, decided to get them their own. They love building!

There is a serious problem with collecting very early LEGO.... they didn't come up with the "LEGO" logo until 2 years after the 1932 introduction of wooden toys. And even later LEGO wooden toys that are heavily played with that may have lost their decal logo can be problematic. A lot of old time collectors will avoid toys that don't have a logo... or if there's one (logo free0 that is found exactly as pictured in a Danish retailer catalog, they are often discounted.

But calling something "LEGO" in auctions is often done for questionable old as well as new auction items... that often just really are not the product they are promoted as.

As always.... the buyer beware...

I've only bought a few older items without a logo, mostly train cars. Could they be Brio or Hanse? Sure, but I think it's unlikely. When I buy a wooden toy or an early plastic I want that logo to show that it was made by Lego. A lot of early Brio and Lego look very similar and hard to tell apart. And I'm not sure what the relationship between Hanse and Lego was. But Hanse sold toys that either were made by Lego and licensed to Hanse or were just out right copies. The latter was common in the toy industry before patents and copyrights become common in the late 50s.

One of the rarest things I have is a box given to some employees during the 50th anniversary of the brick party. It has no reference. Inside there is a booklet with the history of the brick.

I maybe have even rarest things but not allowed to show in public ;P

Just found one of those trawling through a loft box full of ancient lego. Didn't know they were minifigures, I actually thought it may had been a statue or something!

Fun thread, I'd say my favourite item is a sealed 7264 Imperial Inspection (I love the box art on that set)
Rarest would be my collection of 9 mid to late 1950's supplemental sets. Again the box art is fantastic, "it belongs in a museum" A very fortunate find as I paid just £1 each for them.
