6243 Brickbeard's Bounty

So I have this local toyship nearby and it still has one set of 6243 for only 50 EUR, which is 72 USD or 43.9 GBP. This /is/ a deal right? Should I rush to the store and check if they still have it? And if so, buy it immediately or should I just let it slide?

Thanks for the fast replies, I'm going to the store this afternoon.

Seems like a pretty good deal - the set is now retired I believe, and used to have a MRSP of £59.99.

If it's a set you want then don't hesitate because I suspect it's going to be increasingly hard to find and expensive as time goes on.

I don't think it's a bad set per se, but in my mind it'll always be an inferior version of 6285 Black Seas Barracuda.

Having said that, it's not often you get the opportunity to buy a MISB copy of a retired set that is actually below it's original retail price, so as a collector, I would strongly consider getting it.

Also, I think that the introduction of the Pirate of the Caribbean theme is going to revitalize collecting interest in all the older pirate ships. And I'm glad too, because they deserve more time in the sun.

Thanks guys, I'm just back from getting it for 49 EUR. Last set in the shop (not the ship as in the OP ;)). Now I just have to decide whether or not to actually build it... I don't really have any room left in my bookcase and if I put it on my desk it will get dusty. :(

Those aren't good reasons not to build ! I've got tons on models on display on my desk and around the house - Tower Bridge, UCS Millenium Falcon and Imperial Shuttle, all the modular buildings - and I just give them a good dust down with a fine brush every week or two to keep them neat.

You are right. I've just finished building it and wow, it's amazing. Very nice ship.

Yeah I know but with the new Pirates of the Caribbean ships coming out soon, I might want to save my money.

Rocao's right. The imperial flagship is the greatest ship ever built!! I'm a huge classic pirate fan, I have 8 of the 10 pirate theme ships. Brickbeard's bounty is a really nice ship, something about the low set hull and the new method of apply the sails makes it really visually appealing and great for display. But the imperial flagship is on an other level! I don't want to take this to far, as it might require its own thread, but basically I keep all my pirate collection on one very large desk, and the Imperial Flagship has a space of its own due to its greatness. I would definitely get the it before I'd even consider the POC, but then again I personally don't like any licensed themes due to the flesh heads/hands.

If PotC sales turn out anything like those of the Prince of Persia sets, just sit tight for a few months and wait for the sets to be heavily discounted..... Then you can afford the Imperial Flagship (which is indeed magnificent) AND the PotC sets. Simples !

^ The popularity of PotC franchise compared to PoP make it unlikely the LEGO sets will flop in the same manner. Furthermore, the ships and some of the larger sets look like good set designs, in and of themselves. Admittedly, I didn't watch PoP, but even if I did, I don't think it would solve the mystery of what some of the PoP sets were supposed to represent :P

@yys4u: I personally don't know if I could ever rate a ship above 6285 and 6286... I'll never be the same kid imagining playing with those sets.

@rocao, ah I get you. Unfortunately for me I never had those two sets as a kid, I've only recently bought 6285 on ebay and 6286 is one of the two I'm missing, the other being the Armada flagship. But I agree those are definitely classics, and the more I look at 6286 the more I just want to give in and buy it for 300. I hold out because I'm pretty sure I'll eventually get it for around 220-240. I just think the level of detail in the Imperial flagship is amazing, from the captains cabin to the kitchen, even the jail! The way everything was done astounds me. It's definitely my favorite.

On a separate note I agree with you on the popularity from PoP to PotC. PotC will no doubt be much more popular as it was a successful trilogy and now adding a fourth component to an already huge fan base. PoP on the other hand...the only thing I can remember about PoP is the old school computer game on DOS

Thanks for the tips guys. Do you also collect the pirate structures, or do you only collect the ships?
  • yys4uyys4u Member Posts: 1,093
I collect some of the pirate structures, but mainly focus on the ships. I don't have any of the big ones like the Eldorado Fortress or the Trading post, (well I actually have teh Fortress somewhere in pieces) but every once in a while when I see a cool complete set on ebay I'll try to get it. I do own all the new pirate line building sets though.

The Pirates theme was one of my main interests when I first started collecting, so I have most of the sets. 6276 El Dorado Fortress and 6277 Imperial Trading Post are one of my personal favorite sets of all time, let alone among the Pirates theme. To be honest, though, there are also a number of poorly designed structures such as 6259 and 6263.

50 EURO's?! I wish it was 50 dollars. I'm proud of you for finding and buying it for such a deal regardless.

Cool to hear you guys also collect the structures. :) And thanks knuclear, I'm also pretty happy with the ship. I even played like a child with it. :P

I currently "only" have Brickbeard's Bounty and the Imperial Flagship.
I actually enjoyed building the Bounty a little more, since the "brace bricks" for the Bounty seem to hold the ship together than the Flagship.
Also, its a shame both ships have more cannon ports than cannons.
Personally, at that price I'd recommend buying it, building it, enjoying it.

Yeah I'm surely am, everytime I walk into my room I look at it and smile. I might buy some extra cannons though.

This is a great set. seems like they have it for about 25% off? I was lucky enough to get thi sas a gift, but I miss out on the older original pirate sets. :(
This is a finely detailed ship - you'll love it.

Nice deal you got.. Again most pirate ships will only go up in their prices as most are very nice models of ships... I have had all but two pirate ships in my possession over the years that the is that blue and white one that they re-issued, and red beard runner... never seem to find lots with tone of those..strange but true.... The Skull Eye Schooner is still the nicest ones I have seen (loose anyway..debating whether or not to open a 10210)
