Finished my first set but

in Building and Techniques
I have about 18 parts left over. I am like 99% sure I followed this to the tee.

Just wondered if it's commen to have extra parts? Or have I missed them out somewhere? Had a quick serch but Could not see any info on this. If anyone can point me in the direction I'll be most great full.

Set 75055 starship destroyer.

    @L3go‌ - What sort of parts are left? Usually LEGO likes to provide extras of all the "smaller" parts in a set, such as 1x1s, tools, etc..

    However, if you have bricks and 1x4 or longer plates left, you probably missed a step!

    If you have all small parts such as 1 x 1 tiles or plates and technic pins then, yes it's normal. Having bricks like 1 x 6 or 2 x 2 left over isn't right at all.

    As long as I have built new LEGO sets (some odd 30 years) they have always had a few spare parts (Even the LEGO CMFs used to do this -they sadly no longer do), so do not surprised if there are spares. Welcome to building LEGO sets.

    Really? Over the past year they've started to include spares of 1x1 plates as well as the usual stuff, so if anything there are more extras that ever right now. Still, it'd make sense for them to stop doing it if they feel they can - multiply the 17 extra parts in 75055 by the hundreds of thousands of units sold worldwide, and do the same for every set they sell, and that's a lot of wasted ABS....

    There was some rumor/commentary over the last year or so, that TLG was going to invest in hyper-sensitive weighing machines on the filling lines, to ensure with a high degree of confidence that those smaller parts have been included. If such a mechanism works, then there would theoretically be no need to put in the extras to ensure that all the parts are there.

    Since the extra parts are still being included today, I'd say that this new system has yet to be implemented...

    @Oldfan - I always assumed that the spare parts were included in case they were lost during the build process rather than to ensure that all the pieces are there.

    They're going to mold an entire bag worth of parts in the same colour in one go and zip the bag AT the molding machine. There would be no need to actually weigh the bag afterwords since there can only be the correct parts in the right amount in that bag

    This could allmost eliminate the need for a warehouse with it's ultra complicated logistics

    Pilotproject started in 2012 on 11 of their +1500 modling machines, but I do not know the current status of it

    TLG claims it will cut productioncosts in half (the actual brick production, not advertising, packaging etc)

    Yes, they've also invested in hypersensitive weighing machinery

    Same. Well, I thought it was more of a courtesy to replace the parts more likely lost during play. That's why you almost always get a spare shooter missle and what not.

    I'm sure they put extra quanteties of certain key parts in the sets, but it really is mainly because TLG cannot count :blush:

    Or rather, do not have the time to count. So better safe than sorry

    Is this why things like the Friend's hair accessories and kitchen supplies come in their own little bags in the sets?

    I don't like rumors. Especially not in this internet age. Someone says "UCS Jar Jar!" and it's reported as gospel across all fora in a split second

    Information like the new TLG's weighing system is not on a rumor basis in Denmark, the info is widely available from very reputed sources. But danish journalism do not have the interest of the rest of the world and our language is not well understood even though we'we tried to do our best, viking style :neutral_face:

    I'd be more than happy to report and translate tidbits like that. There are loads of it, actually

    I myself find it immensly more interesting, and newsworthy, that TLG is implementing a whole new molding process, which will create fewer errors and no extra parts (and maybe even cheaper sets?) than whatever darned exclusive cartoon fig that only can be had if you know the king of New York and stand in que for 14 days so you can flog it off on ebay for 1k$. But I digress

    ...

    We get regular reports of the expansion of TLG's factories (including the new big one in China that will supply 70-80% of the asian market - what will that mean to the EU/US?), the large layoffs in Billund. The hyper cameras that check each brick with 750-1200 pics, the 'fail' tolerance of 3,4 parts per million, the appointment of new headfigures (like the recent woman from Google), the books here that deal with the business perspective of TLG, one of them revealing just about everything that was wrong with TLG, thus a lesson to be learned. Read that and you'll understand the choices the company makes for the future. The .. you know I could go on

    There are some unusual spares in some sets which don't seem to be solely down to size / weight. I recall finding spare 6L bars in sets about 12-18 months ago which seemed odd, and also seems to have stopped now.

    I was also surprised to find an extra 16L plant vine in one of the new jungle friends sets. Any idea why? You do have to bend them to fit so wonder if it is in case of snapping / permanent reshaping (they also seem to include extra 3mm hoses which I guess is for the same reason?)

    Personally I think they do it on purpose.....it's a tiny "signature" from lego.  Because we all do something with those picees.  We add them to a set, or we build a little fancy "something-that-we-dont-know-what-it-is"  Or we save them with all the other extra pieces for another project.   Afterall, Lego wants us to build and use our imagination, so here is a little something extra to just go do that!    They know what they are doing

    not a ton of spare for a 1300 pieces set. I think arkham asylum breakout had like 70 spare pieces. the ninjago flagships come with tons of spare weapons, built half of battle for ninjago city, and I think there were already 4 or 5 spare katanas.
