Instead of ranking by financial value, you could always ask - if you could only keep 10 minifigs, which ones would they be.
I know there would not be many high value minifigs in my top ten.
Coming to a copy of blocks magazine shortly...
Each month a distinguished lego guest ("castaway") is asked to choose eight Lego sets, a Lego book and a special minifigure that they would take if they were to be cast away on a desert island, whilst discussing their lives and the reasons for their choices.
Probably best that they get given the UCS MF and taj mahal (complete works of Shakespeare and bible) automatically.
David Cameron's special minifigure ...
Ed Miliband's ...
Nick Clegg's ...
There are plenty of figs that I have nostalgia for (like King Kahuka, who I dressed up as for Halloween around a decade ago). But my emotional connection to those characters is rooted in the past, not in the present, and I spend much more time looking at and playing with minifigures from more recent sets, which feature detailed designs and captivating stories. Thanks to the Internet, I can experience nostalgia for an older fig just fine without actually having the fig in front of me, or even in my personal collection.
The funny thing when talking about desirability is that it doesn't always line up neatly with the most VALUABLE figs. Figs that command a high price usually do so on account of their rarity, but they're also often more "niche" from a design standpoint. Take the black-suit Superman, for instance. On one hand, it's much rarer than Superman in his default red and blue costume, but on the other hand, it's hardly the character's most iconic appearance. If you could only have one Superman figure ever, without the option of selling or trading it, I think a lot of people would choose the most recognizable version, the same way that I think most Unikitty fans would prefer to have one of the pink variants rather than her angry or queasy variant, or most Johnny Thunder fans would have him in some variant of his classic tan shirt rather than his brown coat from the Himalayan leg of Orient Expedition.
For me, I'd pick sh003, no doubt about it. Christopher Reeve was (and still is) Superman.
I wonder if teens would pick sh077 instead?
I'm not really a comic book / graphic novel reader, so my bias is from the films.
I guess there is something similar for Batman, sh111 probably just about wins it for me, over the other greys and blues. Although I do like the more recent darker versions too, moreso than Superman.
@Aanchir I couldn't agree more with your superman comparison.
Even though I have my exclusive SH Minifigs, if I could only have 10 MFs the NYTF Ironman and Captain America would be there because lets face it, they are super cool. Symbiote Spiderman, bizzaro, and the collector would be the only other ones I'd keep. To round out my list would be chrome c3po, cloud city boba fett, blacktron, the Spartan, and im torn between chrome Vader and Santa Vader.

3 X Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and Pluto.
Also, now that Disney and Lego are working together, do you think we will get more Mickey Mouse figures and other characters? I think that these are pretty special and so few of them exist as well. I had to order mine from Europe to get a good set of them.

I reckon I could go $10,000 for one of those babies! After all, the Superhero preview figs go for $1,000+ and these are way rarer.

The only one I can think of is this guy
I got one with perfect goldtrim  of which there's none for sale at BL (no perfect torso either), so you'd have to get a 400$ MISB 6083
