Next Expert Train?

    ^ My original thought about the next Expert set likely being a stream train was just based on the last two Expert sets having not been steam trains. But also, if you consider that the current two regular train sets are a high speed electric and a diesel then it would seem daft to make yet another of the same type (modern) as the replacement Expert set. I can't see them doing a commuter shuttle train in the Expert line, full of miserable downtrodden workers on their way to the daily grind.

    The regular trains (City trains) would have little to no bearing on what the Creator Expert train will be. The two City trains available while the Horizon Express (an electric) was available were both electric and there was also the limited edition diesel.

    ^ It went to Sold Out on the UK site (after I had made an order!) and the guys at my local Lego Store said it was end on line whe I managed to get two last weak.

    I've been intentionally ignoring this thread because it would be so easy to get sucked in to the discussion on a nice new train. However, it's not New Years yet and I have no resolutions to break...

    I am a big fan of the trains, and TLG has released some good ones (obviously, the Emerald Night come to mind). I also like the engine for the new cargo train #60052, and have purchased only the engine and specific cars that I like from eBay. I'll probably pick up a full sealed set when funds are available. Anyway, the engine for #60052 looks like its inspiration was taken from a CSX or BNSF/Santa Fe train (see image below). In fact, they have stickers for these available on eBay. I also went ahead and ordered (from BL) the parts to remove the Lego motor and have just a standard wheels on the back of the train. It looks great...

    That said, I'm not a big fan of what TLG has released train-wise since the EN. The Maersk and the model described above #60052 are pretty decent, but the HE and new high-speed trains don't really interest me. I would be interested in an older train such as the Orient Express shown below. In fact, I would be interested in any older train version that TLG released as long as it had significant detail (like the EN). And because I like to just show the models (not operate them), I wouldn't have a problem with a UCS version of a train (larger than the standard Lego tracks) for viewing purposes.

    But like everyone else on this thread, I am always interested (and tend to show my interest with money) in anything "Lego train."

    Well I think that LEGO cannot just make steam engine after steam engine. I do agree that the HE was not as mind blowing as most people were hoping for, but it is not bad, and again I think LEGO is trying to keep it fresh if they are doing these outside of the train theme. I hope a steamer is next, but would not be surprised if they do something like a electro powered loco, like the old LEGO croc engines (#4551 or #10183) or some other intercity rail loco and cars and I really would not mind those either.

    As someone with little interest in trains, I would almost immediately hop and buy Hogwarts or a Winter train. Of course, I suspect I am not the target train market, so I expect neither. :-)

    There are 3 hogwarts express already. There could be another but it would be in the HP theme. There is also the holiday train but a newer one for winter village would be nice, but the creator trains come out in Jan, so I expect that will only happen as the christmas set, or they could move the release forward one year but not this time.

    ^How many Millennium Falcons have they released? There are probably many more to follow. Hogwarts Express has been made a few times because it is iconic; much like the MF. All that is left is an Expert (UCS) version.

    I'd love them to do something as old as the Rocket, or even a whole Liverpool and Manchester line style set as in these stamps I remember from my childhood.

    I had (or still have) the one from Märklin. Though the biggest problem what I see in this set is the tain window frame from the Emerald Night. Lego is not going to reproduce this rare part, because it would decrease the aftermarket value of the EN. Sad story but money money money matters much more. :/

    ^its off topic, but from a business point of view they should care about having a good after market, where the product retains its value. It suggests value in the product and no doubt there are consumers who buy LEGO knowing that, unlike most plastic crap, when the kids grow out of it they'll be able to recoup much of the money. However, if you have a conversation with anyone from LEGO above the retail store level you're left in no doubt that they have zero love for the after market beyond that point - I suspect they'd be content with the after market value sticking at RRP or thereabouts, but when it goes 2x RRP or more it causes them nothing but trouble.

    More to the point, as the Winter Village Market arches showed, they're more than happy to reproduce a piece in high demand, and even give it as a reason for its inclusion.

    ^ High prices on the aftermarket can also indicate that not many people bought it when it first came out - see UCS MF and CC for examples.

    LEGO will make a part to meet the need of its set, I think that has been seen time and time again, aftermarket demand or not. Take #10235. One could argue that set was made to get the 1x8x2 Dark Blue Arches back out there.
    However I believe that LEGO has phased out that 1x4x3 'train' window (like seen on #10194) from production entirely. If this is the case you may see LEGO use existing tan 1x4x3 window frames.

    It looks like that train was the inspiration for the 12V #7740 set of 1980.

    I love this excuse from many of AFOL's and also Lego, sermonize this over and over again. I'm working in metal industry and also mould design, we produce parts which are for machines from around 1980's and far more complex. And somehow we find a way to produce those parts within the new manufacture line and not alter them at all, so our customers are able to run their old machines.

    But Lego is mysteriously not able to reproduce old parts 1:1. Lego parts are quiet simple parts, compared to what we produce. And telling people, oh we've thrown away the molds and such excuse. Yeah of course, whatever....

    They just don't want to do it, period - and I don't get why they're not admitting it, instead of telling people fairytales and other untrue stories.

    I'd love to see a holiday theme crossover for the new train. In the region of Duluth, MN (U.S.A) they have a holiday train ride people can take. It runs along the western edge of Lake Superior.

    It is a beautiful train, too. Follow the link and scroll down the facebook page for varying images. I have to admit, though, that I am keen on the color of this train ;) as it it my favorite color of Lego.

    Thats a cool trainset. It reminds me of our old Rail Cruse America consist out of St. Louis Union Station, Mo. I worked on that train for 4 years till it was sold to the Kansas City Southern. Check it out below.

    ^^ I don't think it is because they cannot do it, just that there is no reason to do it. They have often changed the part for a good reason, extra strength or less plastic. Why reproduce an old and sometimes inferior part, when they have a new one that replaces it. Unlike old machinery, a more modern part will still work even if it is not exactly the same.

    @crazycarl, that is a wonderful train. I love the 4th or 5th car on it with the bubbled-viewing station top. I'm not a person with huge train knowledge, so I probably have that wrong ;) but I simply like the lines :)

    If I were Lego I wouldn't just up and make a part if I weren't going to use it in a mass produced set(s). The infamous "Dark blue Arch" wasn't in many sets to begin with. Does anyone know if the ones in WVM are exactly the same as Market Street? I mean exactly. If the color is off or the mold id slightly different; it isn't the same part imo.

    As far as losing molds and breaking molds; Hasbro had a similar problem when they resurrected their G.I. Joe "A Real American Hero" line. They had said that some of the molds used to make the original action figures were either broken or lost and they chose not to redesign the molds even thought the demand was there.

    I really doubt that, it hasen't been used since 2011 yes, but that does not mean anything. TLG will bring back a part if needed, like the 4594 which was lost for 12 years

    Besides the smaller 1 x 2 x 3 trin window was used this year and the years before (allthough the glass hasen't been used since 2004)

    ^ Probably very low, unfortunately. Unless you can get a train fanbase to vote, that is. Maybe you need to infiltrate train fan websites and get notice that way.

    I am more of a Cargo Train fan. What has always been lacking from Lego are proper rail cars. I would love proper box, ore, hopper and "reefer" cars to go a long with an Expert Cargo Train.

    Is has been discussed before that Lego Trains aren't huge money makers for Lego. Most train sets are well over $100 USD and that puts them out of most peoples budgets.

    If there was a wider range that you could buy in smaller chunks it would help. You buy a set to start you off but the ability to add carriages would be great. Brio and other similar sets are very popular, can't help but think they're missing a trick (or it is at least worth a go)!

    Lego did do that that with their "My Own Train" theme, but the builds were sub par. I have a few of the freight cars. An Expert Line of Passenger and Freight cars sold individually or 2 in a set would be awesome.

    So LEGO should bring back something like #2126? I liked this set. Were the train cars hugely detailed? No, but that, maybe with LEGO just selling the Blue Loco from the new Freight set also as a standalone set, would be mean you may be able to get a bunch of cars and a loco without the track or motor or anything like that if you already have an earlier set

    If this is true, it's probably part of the WV-themed sets. Actually would kind of make sense as TLG seems to be running out of ideas in the Winter Theme. Based on the price points for the WV-themed sets, I'm guessing it would be a "winterized" version of TLR Constitution train set #79111. JMO...

    ^Not until pics are seen at the least. Currently #10173 is a perfect complement to the WV series, it will be hard to beat so the onus is on the new one in living up to the bar it has already set.

    I wouldn't be surprised at all at this point if a new holiday train came out that was almost exactly the same as #10173. Low design cost for LEGO probably helps their decision when it comes to something Train related since the market isn't that big. And since #10173 came out before the Winter Village stuff and the WV sets have seemingly done really well, it makes sense for them to just basically re-release it.

    Low cost, high potential demand (for their likely lower target production numbers) and a successful theme for it to go with. Win-win.

    If this is true, it will be interesting to see if the holiday train takes the slot of the Winter Village set, or if it will be a "normal" set. A late summer release of the train with a station released as the Winter Village set would probably sell a lot of both sets.

    If that both replaces the Creator Expert train set and takes the Winter Village slot for 2015 then it further decreases the number of exclusives on the market by one. To me it seems that Lego is really cutting back on the number of exclusives. Lots of them have been retiring at the end of this year and I don't see nearly as many hitting the market in 2015. Maybe their reports show that buyers can't keep up and they are cannibalizing each others' sales?

    How much notice would we get of a new train before release? 6 months? It is a bit strange (or is it) for TLG to retire the current Expert train with sign of a replacement at all.

    From an engine standpoint, I also like the cargo trains better than the passenger trains...with one big exception: the Emerald Night engine. It's a beaut! But @Pitfall69's comment regarding "proper rail cars" is spot on, and I also like his list of potential car-types. Three car-types I would love to see in particular are the standard "box car" (first image), a nice "tank car" (second image), and finally a " cattle car" (third image). I really like the red-brown color on these cars.

    I'm sure I could come up with some others... :-)

    Not sure it makes sense to have only a seasonal expert train available for what I would assume would be part of the year?

    Unless the creator trains are not selling well then it would leave a massive gap. And if they're not selling well then they just need to make more desirable trains!
