Walmart Goof

Saw this in the Sunday Walmart ad. Do you suppose that they would sell me an $90.00 Ghost for $20.00?

    Unless Walmart sends out a chain-wide notice about this error, then you can give it a shot!

    This could be argued either way. The print description is correct but the picture is wrong.

    I doubt they will but couldn't hurt to try. I know if everyone does it they will send out a retraction to post in stores. I have seen them do it with a price match over diapers. Dollar general had a ad saying 10 dollars for any count but they only sold one count of like 20. Didnt take Walmart long to figure this out and send out info to the stores to stop price matching it.

    Wasn't there something like this about 2 years ago also? I know it had to do with the City #4204 The Mine. They put it in a weekend ad for $39. At the time everyone was guessing it was to mess with Target/TRU about price matching? I remember TRU matched for a day or two and then they got the corporate message to stop matching because it was a misprint.

    I know one year target had misprinted a add for 7962 anakins and sebulba's podracer. It was like this they used the wrong picture but didn't have what the name was in the ad. Target corrected it in in their stores but I got Walmart to price match the ad. It was like 65 cheaper then what it normally went for.

    #4204 @ $40 from WM was in November 2012. IIRC, there was talk about WM messing with Target/TRU PM'ing since many of the WMs did not even carry this set at that time or had very low inventory.

    #7962 @ $30 from TG was in October 2012. I don't remember the specific details of the ad, but I had no problems getting 2 at the customer service desk. Also, while I was there, I noticed that they had #9465 on sale for $30, so I grabbed 2 just to complete my MF collection. Best on the spur of the moment purchase I have ever made :).

    Also very hit or miss depending on the store and manager you get. Odds are there will be a correction tomorrow as several of the slickdeal comments indicate managers calling the main office to ask about the deal. Great deal if it worked out for you!

    I also imagine the level of your greed will have a factor. If you have one set in your cart along with other items the manager might be more inclined to help then if you roll up with just a stack of Ghosts in your cart demanding them honor the goof.

    Well my store refused to honor it and I refuse to make a scene so I just let it go.

    Worked for me. The manger at the store I went to said, "If it's in the ad, we have to honor it." There was still 1 left on the shelves.

    I took mine up to the register, they honored it, and then abruptly pulled all the ads off the front door racks.....then told me thanks for bringing it to their attention. You are so welcome!!!!

    Looks like corporate has sent out a message on this. My WM pulled tem from the shelves and replaced with this memo.

    Went to my store after my wife got off work, all the ads (except for cosmetics) were pulled from the front on both sides, and customer service didn't have any more. Plenty of the sets on the shelves, but we were definitely a day late on this one! That'll teach me to not check the forum religiously every couple of hours!

    ^ I saw the same thing. One store had the message posted and the second store had no clue what I was talking about. This was around 4:30 today. They went and found an ad at CS and the toy manager went on some rambling about their being lots of Star Wars Lego sets and the price of $24.xx on sale for $19.88 didn't apply to one specific SW set...it meant any SW set could be on sale for different prices, not any specific one. I wasn't following her logic. So we finally walked back to the toy dept. and she finally understood that the picture in the ad was for a set that was regularly $89.97 for $19.88, but couldn't sell one because she said it was up to management.

    The corporate message does not surprise me, since this is clearly an error, while the Mine a few years back was a different situation. This one had the name of the set and the picture not matching. It sounded like the only way to get the price adjustment was to have it adjusted at checkout.
    With the Mine, the name of the set and the picture matched. In addition, the set actually rang up at the discounted price.

    Considering some people had issues with Target/TRU pricematching the Mine when the ad looked completely legitimate, I just don't see Target or TRU price-matching this one when it is 'off'. Of course with things like this, mileage varies on who one talks to.

    This is such an obvious mistake. I'm no fan of Walmart but thinking that they should honor the price is rediculous. Like tamamahm said, the Mine price mistake was different: the actual product was pictured along with the correct name. This is not even close. Why waste your time and end up looking like a cheapskate?

    Simply asking a question. Seeing how Target and TRU handle these types of situations can be helpful in deal hunting in the future. And Wal Mart needs to be more careful. If its an obvious error, then they should have caught it. I honestly didn't (See that they listed "Phantom" in the copy) until I saw the corporate message at the store. I had just looked at the picture as do most others.

    I suppose I could see a parent who is not terribly familiar with Lego or Star Wars thinking that it was valid. But we're Lego experts here. Target and even TRU offer enough good deals year around that we shouldn't feel the need to abuse the system.

    Target seems to offer a lot of relatively small discounts that are rarely better than what can be had at Amazon. TRU doesn't often have good deals, but when they do they're significantly better than what can be had at Amazon. For example: #31004 for $9, #60016 for $11, #75014 for $30.

    Clearances are a different story altogether, of course. I've had much better luck at Target than TRU (in fact, I've never seen any clearance LEGO at my local TRU).

    I don't shop at TRU very often but last Christmas they had some decent sales. I remember getting Battle of Hoth for $30. Also, recently they have had new sets on shelves before their respective release dates at RRP.

    TRU was uncharacteristically generous I think last year around the holidays. The BF Special door busters that they had enough stock where I did not have to get up at 5am to get in on the deals and then what appeared to be sales on individual sets that happened to stack with other promos during the rest of the year (though I'm sure that stacking was unintentional at least in the physical stores).
    Not sure we are going to see such deals from TRU this season though.

    It's also a free country (sort of). If you don't like one retailer then just don't shop there. TRU was probably feeling the heat last year and decided that it was in their best interest to be competitive. Generally speaking they are still poor with customer service and above average retail pricing. But a deal is a deal. I just don't see the point in abusing an obvious mistake. Especially using it at another retailer. Seems pretty un-ethical.

    I took one set to the customer service desk and asked if they were really selling the set for $19.88 or if it was a mistake. Managment was called and they said that it was a mistake and the set would be pulled but they did let buy the set for the "sale" price. It will probably go into the Toys for Tots box.

    This is my feeling as well. An unknowledgable parent wanting it for the price in the ad is one thing, but I (as most people here) knew it was a mistake so I would have misgivings with taking advantage. IMO, this is no different than the other kind of behaviors that are often frowned on here - like skirting limits, buy-feel-return cmfs, and so on. I'm not judging - I just wouldn't do it. My walmart would tell me to eff off if I tried it anyways... They are horrible.

    To me, the issue is that it is a partial mistake. If the set, image, and price all match (like The Mine last year) I believe it is fair to go to that retailer and try to obtain the set as fully advertised. We can speculate that the deal is "too good" or "must be a mistake". But it could just as easily be that the store made a massively wrong purchase decision and is trying to clear inventory. Trying to get it honored at another store is OK, at least until the point that the original store admits the ad is an error.

    However, in this instance the discrepancy between image and title identify that it is clearly a mistake. Trying to force Wal*Mart to honor it, or any competitor to match it, is shady at best and sleazy at worst.
