The "Elves" sets certainly are not what I was expecting...

Looking forward for #42039.. a Le Mans/USC type car is nice.

I am trying to figure out what all it may do.. I see a HOG and a black bevel gear on the side that must make something move...

Not sure the engine cover would lift up as it is seems to be attached to the rear wing.. may be it lifts up the car (for pit stops/tire change)...

^^^ Could be... I wonder if this has suspension...?
  • CrowkillersCrowkillers Member Posts: 757
I doubt that 42039 has a suspension system... It's already very low to the ground...

I am disappointed by almost all of this. There are few, if any, grand sets--the Elves sets look like they're just thrown together. The DC sets look lackluster (I had grand visions, I guess). Looking at all the titles I've seen released, I thought there were a good 12-15 sets I'd need to get. Seeing these pics, I'm not sure there are any must-haves.

^ agreed. Year after year it seems the builds get smaller while more and more emphasis is placed on the figures. I guess in a decade or do LEGO might just be an action figure company

I just got my eyes on the Flatiron Building. The Star Wars Microfighters are cute and the DC Comics sets may be a purchase for the minifigures.

Like many others I was expecting better sets but these look worse than last years January sets. I think LEGO cares more about the minifigures than then their actual toys; this has always been a problem in recent years. I don't know who to blame. The designers probably done their best with what LEGO have given them on their briefs but these January sets just may not be for us AFOL's. Let's show kids and see what they think of them as LEGO has done intense market research to bring kids the themes and toys they want. The Direct 2 Consumer is what us AFOL's should be waiting for as they are for us and I know LEGO doesn't disappoint us with those.

I'm still waiting for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars Episode VII and the Direct 2 Constumor sets...

Nice to see a Hulk and Green Goblin crossover with DC Comics :)

The Elves sets have won me over a bit. They've managed to keep the pastel colours of the Friends sets but implement them in a more believable way. It looks almost like it could be an anime series tie in and the mini dolls actually look quite good.
Elsa's palace was pretty much what I expected, it would have been much nicer if it had more trans blue and less white, but I was expecting TLG to make it easier to produce, nice to see Olaf, they'd have been daft not to include him but you never know what TLG will decide.
DC sets I've commented on in the DC thread.
Interesting that it looks like there are some Chima battle pack type sets...I've been hoping for that for a long time. I really want a load of the Chima head pieces to try to recolour to use as armour (similar to the Hound's helmet in Game of Thrones) but with no significant number of doubles in my collection didn't want to ruin them.
Pirates it looks like they are still waiting on final mini figure designs (if those are the final mini figures then apparently this wave is Pirate City) so i think I'll reserve judgement. The only thing I was really hoping for, but can't see, is an old style pirates monkey.
Bionicle, I'm going to wait for final product images rather than digital renders, but I only had the first wave as a kid, so those don't fill me with nostalgia but look more like Hero Factory.
Microfighters look fun, really like that ATAT and a lot of those sets (particularly the battle packs) have a lot of potential.

I'm reserving final judgements but all in all I'm looking forward to what next year brings (even if my wallet isn't!)

Really pleased there is a Star Wars battle pack with four Storm Troopers in it, I can amass an army for a reasonable price :).

^ It is just a shame that they are presumably going to be Rebels Stormtroopers (like the one in #75053). Still, four Stormtroopers cannot be bad!

^Yeah it will be a huge hit if regular Stormies. If it is 4 Drooper Troopers I won't touch it.

I kinda dig the Elves sets the more I think about it. One thing that really stood out was the overall absence of pink. I also like that it is an original property and not another license. Looks like a lot of cool new colors and parts and the sets are generally quite imaginative and different from anything currently out there for girls. I think these will be a big hit.

^The pictures have certainly won me over compared to just the names of the sets.

Me too. But one the exception being #70166 - I was hoping for the return of the original Spyclops, I should have known better though...

Love the prelim pictures of 42039 - great large rimmed low profile tyres.

Also like the look of the Elves sets but I have to say I am a little disappointed by the lack of decent (i.e. largish Lego City or Ninjago sets). I think the 31036 set for Lego Creator looks nice.

The 42039 does look like it has what may very well be suspension on it.. You can see a glimpse of what appears to be yellow on each side right behind the hood..

I am tremendously excited for the new BIONICLE, Ninjago, and Elves sets!

The Elves theme in particular really caught me by surprise. I've been saying for a while that the LEGO Group needs to invest in an in-house fantasy theme for girls, and so while I was happy for Elves to be announced I had no idea what to expect. It turns out the final theme is everything I could have dreamed of and more. It's like the girls' answer to Ninjago (which is already surprisingly popular with girls, so if this theme gets the media tie-ins such an awesome concept deserves, then I can see it becoming similarly successful).

Back when I was in high school, I spent hours and hours reading books about fairies and other fantasy creatures, then drawing characters inspired by what I read. They were usually adolescents with elemental powers, just like the characters in this theme seem to be. I never envisioned these kinds of characters within the context of LEGO, though, and now I wonder why I didn't because it looks like it's going to be a perfect fit!

I do have to say as someone that normally does not like city that the city 'swamp' sets look very cool.

While I would have liked Elsa's castle to be larger, this looks reasonable.

    Mixels!

    Disappointed in Pirates.

    Chima battlepacks... very cool.

I would like to see Elves close up. The boxes will be very appealing to girls. I like that they are making this a 'story' with what looks like characters and an element focus. The tree house looks very playable, and I love the flowering tree look. This line has a ton of potential. I want to see the bakery, since it looks like there is lava. I am not sure about the boat. I do like that they included at least one male as a main character. I can see a difference in color too. Looking at these and then looking AG Friends, Friends is looking too pastel. I love the natural element colors these sets have.

I'm disappointed with Ninjago, the lack of a larger set, but happy to see snakes back.

Friends...the house and lighthouse look good.
