Which set, from a theme you were NOT going to buy, became irresistible?

For me it might be the #75060 USC Slave I. Those gorgeous Streamline Moderne curves in dark green and dark red are just too yummy. When my addiction to Lego started, I decided to not collect Star Wars; so many iconic sets were already produced and retired, there is the Star Wars price premium, and space ships are more difficult to display to advantage. Every collection needs limits.

I collect the Star Wars theme, but had decided to stay away from the UCS sets. That was until the Slave 1 announcement. But that's still the same theme, so I guess my real answer is...

The Lego Movie sets and specifically Benny's Spaceship. I only saw the movie for the first time when the DVD was released and, of course, loved it. Then this past weekend, we showed it to my son and I think he loved it more than I did. Now, I need the sets. I had no intention of ever getting any of them aside from the collectible minifigs. Now, I want them all.

If you count The Hobbit as a theme by itself, then for me it was #79003 An Unexpected Gathering. Although I had got some of the LoTR sets, the Hobbit ones hadn't inspired me all that much, especially after I saw the first film and found it underwhelming. I had seen pictures of 79003 and thought it looked good but my general apathy towards the Hobbit theme meant I had no plans to get one. But then I saw a built model as part of a display at my local toy store and fell completely in love with it. It is still the only Hobbit set I own.

I guess the one I think of is LEGO Movie line and the Ice cream truck, because it is unlikely for LEGO to release an ice cream truck in the future as a city set. Same with the Set with the plumber's van. I like Benny's space ship but it is a bit pricey IMO.

Irresistible isn't the word I'd use but despite having no interest in the Friends theme I had to get #41028 for the dolphin...if I ever have the space for a large MOC I really want to make a Zoo, seeing the dolphin made me want to add an aquarium section!

I don't like the Lego Star Wars sets, but when I saw R2D2 I just had to have him, now I want Yoda, but he is beyond my bank balance. I don't want any other Star Wars though.

I have decided on only UCS SW sets, but I've picked up few ship sets here and there. Then the microfighters became a common theme. Idky, but I really like them and have all of them, including the fan expo one
  • purple_hazepurple_haze Member Posts: 95
Another one for Bennys Spaceship, I liked the movie but none of the sets, even the minifig series didn't really appeal to me, until Benny's spaceship was announced. I also had to get the Constitution from the Lone Ranger theme.
I often find though that even with the best intentions of only buying one set from a theme, I end up buying more once I have one. They always look so lonely!!!

Zero interest for Chima. But I have a few of the polys because they're adorable.

Irresistible is a bit strong, but I had zero interest in Galaxy Squad, until one of my kids really wanted the 70702 Warp-Stinger set (he was at the the where liked bugs). We ended up getting most of the sets from that theme, and they ended up being a lot of fun.

I have a feeling the 2014 Agents line will follow the same fate. He's been eyeing some of them lately.

The #41999 Limited Crawler got me to buy Technic which I typically don't pay much attention to. Loved the muscle car/monster truck design, coloring, packaging.

I also grabbed the #2506 Skull Truck from the first Ninjago wave. I know it was one of the least popular sets from that line but it was the one that really appealed to me while the rest of the line did not.

I guess what I have learned from this is I must have a deeper appreciation for giant balloon tires than I realized.

Lone Ranger's Silver Mine Shootout because I always enjoy brick built rock walls and there is a lot of playability in the set.

I had no intention of collecting the Harry Potter sets, but then a Bricklinker sent me a parts order packaged in the box for brickset.com/sets/4762-1/Rescue-from-the-Merpeople. After staring at the box for a while, I decided that I liked the color combinations and parts, and I wouldn't mind having that set in my collection.

So I bought it. And I bought another HP set, and another. A couple of years later, I am now "Harry Potter complete".

    I have a few:

#10228 Haunted House from Monster Fighters
#79108 Stage Coach Escape from The Lone Ranger
#70816 Benny's Spaceship! from the The Lego Movie

Another close one would be with Star Wars. I don't collect the theme but had to have a #9492 Tie Fighter & #9493 X Wing. That's all the SW representation I need or want.

I bought #75052 solely for the dewback, because I had the old one - otherwise I generally don't buy Star Wars sets. Apart from that time I wanted a General Grievous. And I'm still after a Darth Vader.

Looking at my Brickset collection summary (440+ sets and counting), apparently I couldn't care less for:
    • Castle — yet I absolutely had to get the gorgeous #7189 MVR
    • Ninjago — yet I totally needed a #9448 Samurai Mech
    • PoP — yet #7573 Battle of Alamut is one of my all-time favorites to this day
    • Architecture — yet I can't stop drooling over the ingenious #21018 UN Headquarters
    • The Lone Ranger — yet I couldn't miss out on the stunning #79108 Stagecoach Escape
    • LotR and Hobbit — yet both #10237 Tower of Orthanc and #79003 An Unexpected Gathering were day-one purchases for me; also there's something about #79006 The Council of Elrond that made it a must-have, even though it's laughably tiny and obscenely overpriced
Honorable mention goes out to #10228 Haunted House, because even though the Monster Fighters line did nothing for me, I somehow ended up getting 38% of the sets, so it doesn't really count for the purposes of this experiment.

Similarly, when I came out of my Dark Ages I would have never imagined I'd ever be getting a single SW or Technic set, but lo and behold I keep buying a few every year.

Conversely, Pharaoh's Quest looked awesome in every particular, yet for some reason I ended up passing on it all except for the #7307 Flying Mummy Attack, which is a really really nice little set.

Likewise, I was loving the LEGO Movie theme to the moon and back when it first came out, but I only ever got a couple sets for the parts, and am not even interested in properly BLing the rest of the line.

    TL;DR: Funny how it works.

I don't have a single GS set or even space set (I'm more into historical themes and SW) but I'm hurting for the Galactic Titan. Just need to find one for the right price! A few weeks ago I missed one at the Lego store at 30% off by just a few minutes and have been jonesing ever since!

Tower of Orthanc. I did enjoy the books and the movies, but I decided to not buy any of the other LotR sets because 2012 was full of too much other awesomeness. I made Orthanc a one-off purchase, unless you count the Uruk-Hai polybag.

Usually if there is single set from a theme or wave I don't want, it torments me knowing there is just one I don't own until I buy it. Even if I don't like it. I just can't help myself. Until recently it was Star Wars stuff - just seems like way to many rehashed sets. I finally broke that cycle and pass on almost everything Star Wars related. Maybe new movies will finally breath some life back into that theme - at least for me. It still hurts seeing all those sets I don't have in my collection - I haven't missed a set in years. I will probably still have to pick up the figures at some point.

Monster Fighters, ended up buying all sets after buying the Castle for $50, and the Haunted House also swayed me.

That's a really odd and valuable thing to package a Bricklink parts order in. My friend had that set when we were kids and I was very jealous. Looking at its value now, I really wish I'd stopped being a boob and bought one for myself.

Anyway, having recently emerged from my brief dark ages, I saw the photos for the modular Parisian Restaurant last fall, before it's release, and knew I had to have it right away. I had never owned a modular building before, as I thought they were too expensive and I was always mostly interested in Castle stuff anyway. What's funny is that now I'm so obsessed with Modular Buildings that they are practically the only thing I build these days.

I am not into the Chima theme, but when I saw the Gorilla Striker I really liked the look and the minifigures and bought it on sale. Another one I want to get is the Infearno Interception from the new Agents line. It looks a lot like a Tron vehicle and that flame helmet is pretty cool.

#70709 That's the only GS set we have, only got it because of clearance, and not to rub it in, but that is one sweet set. It was actually the one I was thinking of when I saw this thread, although I didn't have to have it. At one time I also didn't think I wanted any Technic sets either, but the #8110 Unimog was included in a lot I once bought, and after getting #42009 Mobile Crane, I find that I want most of the bigger sets. The new #42025 Cargo Plane looks fantastic.

To answer the question more directly, I'd have to say that I was more impressed with Monster Fighters than I predicted I'd be based solely on the name. I probably could have lived without the smaller sets, but when I saw this from #9468 I had to have it. And then all the rest. Honestly one of the best Lego themes.

gosh that sounds all too familiar. I bout the Vampyre Castle thinking it would be the only set from the theme I would get. I ended up buying all of the sets after that (except the Zombies, which was long gone by that time).

That is just about my experience too. Luckily I was able to snag a FB before they went off the market. Now I am playing catch-up with the rest of the line and developing moc mods of my own.

Fire Brigade, it wasn't an instant buy and it wasn't even on my radar for a long time. but growing up in a firefighting family I've seen ever era fire engine the US has ever used. it wasn't until late 2011 that I got to see the set in person, and it became a must have. and honestly I would love to get my hands on 2 more to combine into a recreation of the historic Fire station in my town. very similar architecture and period designs.

to this day its the only modular I own, and it will likely stay that way until a remake is made in oh I'd guess 10 more years ;)

I still want to get the fire brigade because the year on the building is the year my grandfather was born and he was fire fighter. I also now really want the Minecraft mine. Before when I just saw the prototypes I thought the minifigure scale sets were going to be bad but after seeing the pictures the mine actually looks very nice.

UCS Tumbler for me was a must buy, even though the Nolan trilogy was just OK for me (I find the 3rd film ridiculous - why did no-one just end Bane with a snipers bullet to the temple?) and I didn't own a single SH set prior to that one.

I think it was the Star Wars Super star Destroyer. I like space Lego but had never realiy bougth mutch Star Wars Lego, even when i like the movies. May be it was since it was Licenced. But the SSD looked nice but it was too big i thought. But then I started a big building project and thinking use it for parts so I got it. But it is still in the box even when the project has passed the use of the parts from it.
I see many says the Lego Movie. I liked the movie and Bennys Spaceship was a MUST.
Since I'm was a child in the Classic space period.
But the SSD break the ice and now i have got a few more Star Wars sets.

It's been mentioned a few times but it was #79003 'An unexpected gathering' for me. Liked the LOTR films but couldn't justify getting into another theme plus all the sets were a bit underwhelming, until I saw the lovely hobbit house. Got it for 33% off so it was extra nice.

I avoided it for two years and had no interest until I decided to buy it in 2013, and now it's a set I never regret purchasing and wish I had bought I earlier but it became a must buy after the mini VW Van was seen as one of the freebies in late 2013.

#10219 Maersk Train. Not really a theme, but I was never enthralled with the ships or the aura of "Maersk blue" surrounding other maersk sets. But then I saw the set and it has become one of my favorites. (and yes, I can confirm that the Maersk blue color in person is beautiful!)
