Welcome - I just posted on your Eurobricks thread and then realised you're here on the Brickset Forum as well !

I love your project and have pledged. Good luck raising the necessary funds.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Interesting idea. I've gone for an early bird special too (quite a few have gone this morning), so I hope you get the full funding.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
Yay! Finally a kickstarter project I want to support. Great idea, good information. Pledged.
  • tedwardtedward Member Posts: 163
Pledged yesterday and then went back this morning and add the international shipping after I saw the email.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
A little bump for this. Just over 1/3rd of the way there to the first funding goal.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
There is a poll on eurobricks about colours, and what you might be using this for.

And they've got half way with 19 days to go...
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
    Hopefully they will make it.

Half way in a third of the time, but of course many of those interested will have pledged when they have first seen it.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
    Indeed, could be close
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
Pledged. Only 180 of the £29 options left. They'll most likely need those all purchased and make the rest up with the 2 brick kits. Here's hoping!
  • jgadgetjgadget Member Posts: 192
I pledged pretty much as soon as this was announced on Brickset, but I wish that the rewards stacked.

I have gone for the 2x SBricks + 42009 instructions.
I would probably have gone for the 3x SBricks + 42000 instructions, but it doesn't seem such good value and I would lose the 42009 instructions.
(I don't think that I can submit 2 pledges, without having 2 accounts.)

I might even have considered going for a higher number of SBricks, such as the train diehard bundle, although 8 would be a lot, and I'd again lose the 42009 / 42000 instructions.

Stacked rewards would have tempted me to pledge more.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ you can ask them how they plan on handling pledges. With the train track Kickstarter that completed not long ago if you wanted multiple of the $12 sample pack you just pledged X * $12 and at the end you went through a pledge manager site that showed you had your total pledge amount to "spend" in the store so you could select the number of $12 pledges you wanted. I think a couple of the addons were actually cheaper in the store so I ended up adding money to my pledge and changing what I ordered.

So for this they may let you pledge an additional amount to get 2x of the 2 controller rewards.
  • jgadgetjgadget Member Posts: 192
By putting my comment in here, I hoped that it would be read by the SBrick team and maybe they'd adapt their pledges/rewards, if they can.

Thanks for the note about the railway track project.
SBrick is my first foray into KickStarter, so I wasn't even aware of the track project.
I'll be keeping an eye on their product now that it's been funded.

Email them. They seem to be fairly responsive.

I don't think value should be based on the early bird special though. I think the idea of having one cheap is that many people sign up and spread the word.
  • jgadgetjgadget Member Posts: 192
    Ok, I'll email them.

I wasn't basing value on the early bird special.
I was comparing the 2xSBrick for £70 (£35 each) with 3xSBrick for £120 (£40 each). Each of these rewards includes one set of instructions.

Putting it another way, it costs £50 to get the extra SBrick in the £120 package.
It would be much cheaper to email my daughter and ask her to sign up for the early bird, to get the extra SBrick. While I wouldn't get the car instructions, I wouldn't lose the crane instructions.

Early bird specials are now all gone. £11K to go in 12 days...
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,469
Quite often Kickstarter projects get s massive flurry towards the end of their project. 2 projects that I have previously supported got close on double in the last day what they had managed for the whole of the rest of the time the project was active.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
    £49k in 19 days, £11k in 11 shouldn't be a problem.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Yes, they should make it. Hopefully they will get enough to do the stair top design as well (especially as that is used in most of the images). Having cables coming off one side will be more useful than off two sides.

The functionality shown in that train video is really good.

I have a model all ready to go to test the S-Brick out, but I don't have an apple product to use for the control...

I love KickStarter. I want to make potato salad too! :P
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
Just over 5000 GBP to go with 9 days left. That's further along than I thought it would be when @CCC posted at the halfway funded point. I fear that these last pledges will be the most difficult to achieve though.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
It has done 6K in three days, so let's hope it gets there. There is one full weekend left too.
  • wagnerml2wagnerml2 Member Posts: 1,376
I just made a pledge. The train demo on the facebook page is very impressive!

    Hmm. Just noticed this.
I'm at work, so can't sit here looking at videos. Is there an advantage to this over, say, using my Mindstorms EV3 with an iPad as a controller?
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
    edited August 2014
I'm not familiar with mindstorms, but price will be a big reason. It is quite different to mindstorms.

It is more of a replacement for IR controllers, and there are improvements which are a big deal for playing with remote control cars outside. Improvements there are both range and use in sunlight.
  • BooTheMightyHamsterBooTheMightyHamster Member Posts: 1,533
Ok, cheers. Probably not something I'd use.
    Thanks!

I am not familiar with kick start. This is the first time I've invested. Is the project guaranteed since it hit its target?
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
    ^ Yes.
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
^^ Once fully funded, all the backers are charged and the creator is supposed to complete the project. If that's what you mean by guarantee, yes, the project is a go.

If you mean "is there a guarantee that the creator will complete the project and the backers will get their rewards as promised?", no Kickstarter does not guarantee this. From their website FAQ on accountability:

"It's the project creator's responsibility to complete their project. Kickstarter is not involved in the development of the projects themselves.

Kickstarter does not guarantee projects or investigate a creator's ability to complete their project. On Kickstarter, backers (you!) ultimately decide the validity and worthiness of a project by whether they decide to fund it. "

Another hobby of mine is board gaming. In the past several years, there have been numerous cases of Kickstarter projects gone awry. Some of the more noteworthy:
    • An updated version of an existing game with a goal of ~$20,000. It had raised ~$75,000 when funding ended in the fall of 2011. After many delays due to mis-management, the last copies of the game were apparently sent to backers earlier this year.
    • Another game reached its goal of ~$7,500 in the fall of 2011. Half a year later, the creator decided to not publish the game because the sun told them not to. It seems the creator has since decided to ignore the sun, but the backers haven't yet received anything.
    • A re-print of a game was successfully funded for ~$22,000 in early 2013. The creator hasn't been heard from since.
    • A game with a goal of ~$35,000 ended with ~$120,000 in funding in the summer of 2012. A year later, the creator announced the game was canceled and that the backers would eventually be repaid. Shortly after, the top backer was refunded ~$2,500. No further refunds have been issued to date.
I'm not posting this to suggest that something similar will happen with SBrick, but to illustrate that Kickstarter is not a pre-order system.

^good to have the voice of reason. I love the idea of crowd funding but am always careful with pledges.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
The good thing here is that they have shown a working product, so it is possible. And independently checked by people like crowkillers. So now it is just down to the finances and business side.

Does anybody know the SBrick app name, I can't find it on the apple app store. Or is it not yet available?
  • wagnerml2wagnerml2 Member Posts: 1,376
thanks @binaryeye. I am not suggesting that it was a preorder system, I just didn't know if Kickstarter monitored projects after the fact in order to maintain the integrity of the process. If scammers can just outright abscond with the funds, then the Kickstarter process would be damaged.

There are risks involved with all "investments". I hope this one gets off the ground. It seems a good product.
  • wagnerml2wagnerml2 Member Posts: 1,376
On a similar note, has there ever been a precedent of Lego buying a technology from a 3rd party developer and incorporating it into their sets?
  • CrowkillersCrowkillers Member Posts: 757

You have to get the App sent to you directly from the SBrick guys... Well they send you a link on where to get it..

There is another more fun looking / kid oriented project on kickstarter

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/937295081/edison-fun-robotics-for-tomorrows-inventors

The VAT on import and the £8 RM fee will probably kill its value for those in the UK, but looks like a nice idea. Cheaper than mindstorms. Although maybe not rcx.

It's probably worth a reminder, there are just five hours to go if anyone does want to go for it and has left it late. The project has reached it's goal and will proceed.

I got mine today!!!!! Can't wait to try it out!!! Anyone else get one?
  • RailsRails Member Posts: 153
I got one. I need to take my #42030 apart a bit to install it. I tested it out though and it works well in test mode. The fridge magnet giving details of the kickstarter campaign was a nice unexpected touch
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
Yep mine came a few days ago but haven't had a chance to try it out yet
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
I also tested it, but not put it to good use yet.
