My GE from John Lewis from those of you in the UK came today... First ever order from John Lewis, the parcel guy handed it over and all I could think was tell me it's in another box, I could already feel it crumbling between my hands... tore off the packaging, and there wasn't another box... Just this...

Safe to say I am on the phone to customer services as I write this...

    looks ouch-y

Yikes, but sadly I have received, and seen, worse.
Hopefully they can replace it for you. I can take a ding or two, but broken seals is a deal breaker for me when I get one from a retail store, or Amazon.

I guess many people wouldn't mind getting it in that state if they are building it or parting it out. Especially if they have left it this late and it is that or aftermarket prices.

Why am I getting a deja vu feeling with regards to the current GE countdown, which reminds me of the FB countdown? It's probably due to go, but don't tell TLG that.

So had a good word with John Lewis, they said that was their last one... So they couldn't replace (and therefore more and likely the reason for the damage)

I went through the box to check I had all bags, baseplate and instructions and all was present and correct, because in the condition I could have assumed this was a return in which someone just opened the box and took out the bag for the parts they needed and returned - honestly some people :/ I wouldn't dare myself...

But anyway, they offered me a return for a full refund... or a partial refund... She went to speak to her manager while I started drafting possible figures in my mind, I mean £10, £20 just wouldn't be worth it... But nearer 50% discount is what I would... Something which I didn't think would come back with, not even close in fact...

But she did, very close in fact, they offered me a £60 refund... £73.99 for a GE (not going to translate into USD due to the fact Lego is cheaper over there anyway) But you get the idea... So yes I went for it...

I just thought if I got offered a Cafe corner with that box now it would still be worth more than what a MISB ever retailed at so why not.

Im glad the compensation was more than just a half hearted one similar to what I have been offered by other retails such as Argos (who also batter Lego boxes) in the past :)

Great deal. This is John Lewis though. Anyone else would have either insisted you kept it or returned for a full refund.

I said, it's my first time shopping at John Lewis and I have only ever heard great things about the company (we don't have a store local to us so I wouldn't know personally) so I don't understand why what seems like such a simple process, wrapping and protecting a box like this was missed...

That is unless it was already damaged prior to it being dispatched to me.

NIce deal. Plus if anything is really missing, you can at least go to LEGO and get those parts.
  • david325david325 Member Posts: 138
Maybe they knew it was damaged as it was their last one and they were trying their luck. Good for you though.

I bought 5 GE sets from John Lewis and today I received an email from aramex (the company handling custom clearance?) saying my order incurred about $200 of import charges. They also give me a link to make the payment. But I think the us custom doesn't charge duty on Lego. Also $200 is almost 20% of the value. This is my first experience of buying Lego from uk. Any idea?

    I found this

    http://rulings.cbp.gov/index.asp?ru=n107015&qu=lego&vw=detail

so indeed the rate for importing Lego sets is free.
  • scrumperscrumper UKMember Posts: 323
I've no idea what the rate should be but wouldn't think there is any (legal) way you can import $1000 worth of goods without custom charges.

Maybe the import agent is also a Lego reseller and has heard that GE may be gone, and believes these will actually be worth thousands of dollars more than you paid for them. ;-)

Can you reclaim the VAT (UK sales tax) you (presumably) paid?
  • adam2edenadam2eden Member Posts: 13
So I send the courier the link I found asking for explanations and they said they made a mistake and will deliver soon. Lego is duty free. I think we can reclaim the VAT from John Lewis minus some fees. I will contact them after I receive the package.

Lego to US is import duty free, but to the UK it will attract duty and VAT unless it has come from within the EU. US exempts toys from import duties no matter where they're from. Maybe JL screwed up the import declaration and the Leo has been treated like something other than a toy for duty considerations.

Lego is not a toy! It's a serious construction and building representation system.

Do not expect it to be at every Target. I would say you are likely to see them more for 25-40% off than 50%. 50% is at mythical Targets that some seem to find, and I do not doubt they are out there, but rarely do you see such sets hit 50% at most Targets. Those that get them to 50% usually get pounced on by people who seem to have nothing better to do than stalk out Targets for sales at the beginning of every day or once a week (whenever Target increases the discounts).
I would say more power to you if you happen to stumble upon them for 50%, but I would say around BF and Cyber Monday you will likely find them for about 35-40% off.

if you like #60022 then walmart consistently has it for around $70. and one don't have to fight for the target clearance.

I passed up three $50 Cargo Terminals today. I just don't see it as being all that impressive of a set. I know that planes do well in the aftermarket, but it looks very juniorized and there isn't much of an airport. On the other hand, I do like the previous Lufthansa set. I can see why that one is fetching decent money in the aftermarket.

Yeah, got mine from Amazon, and also Yoyo.com when they do their LEGOpalooza sales (as long as the terminal are also around 90 or under dollars).
I tend to not pay retail for any 100+ dollar city sets (at least those can still be put on sale)

What ya´ll think about #76001 (Batman vs. Bane)? I guess it will retire soon and (till today) it´s the only TDK set, it contains a unique Bane that will most likely never show up in this outfit in another set and it contains a Tumbler (ok, i know it´s not the best one), so a winner? I don´t know how it´s over in the US but over here (Germany) it has been almost constantly on sale (between 15-30% off) so i don´t know if it was priced to high?!
  • DadDad UKMember Posts: 816
^ In the Uk these were available at 55% off. They were a good buy at that discount. £40 / £17 . I would walk by them at £30. It depends how you sell. I sometimes buy sets such as this with no intention of making any direct profit but to sweeten the deal on a Super Heroes bundle.
  • vitreolumvitreolum RomaniaMember Posts: 1,406
I don't like the set, the tumbler is a joke and the bat... well can't say lego did a bad job but that's an ugly vehicle in my eyes. The minifigs however are excellent, and all three are exclusive. Also it's the only set ever to feature Gordon. Once retired I'm definitely stashing a few.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Chicagoland USMember Posts: 10,118
The Batman sets I struggle with. Will they be worth something one day? Sure, but when will that be? I'm sure AA will do well, only because its price restriction here in the US, but the Batcave has been on sale ALOT since it has been out, and I do not see any one set where someone will be saying they HAVE to get it, especially if there is a third line coming where more sets are released . Although LEGO could do their usual madness and retire the lines even though the LEGO Batman 3 game is due out this fall. Plus you have to ask, how many people are probably stashing Batman sets all thinking they will make a killing one day?
I guess I can also see the #6857 Funhouse doing well, as ironic as that is considering how many were sold of that set and the length of time it was out, but if you got them on sale it probably will be worth it to have a few of those stashed.

I also got my notification that my GE shipped from LEGO (US) today

And don't bet against Batman either. Remember the previous Tumbler set still holds the record for highest RRP multiple right now at around 10x-12x RRP. And the fact that they were widely available at steep discounts during their shelf life too. Rest of the Batman I wave are high performers as well.

The entire line of Superheroes is minifig driven, with a few exceptions for good builds in the Quinjet & Arkham Asylum. And prospects for the line's success in the long term will come down to the characters & costume variants available in a given set. Which will be the same factor why the new Bat vs. Tumbler set will be a solid gainer in the future, as Diggy and Vitreolum pointed out.

If you think Star Wars fans go gaga for costume variants, then just wait until the SH segment catches up. As it's a natural aspect for comics and becomes a necessity to the hardcore collectors needing every version of that character.
