This was discussed a while ago, but I forgot about the conversation. Is there any way to tell if you have the Fire Brigade with missing parts. Is there a batch number printed somewhere? There are numbers on the seals; will that yield any information?

I called Lego and they replaced my piecemeal order of replacement parts with the entire missing bag of parts, so I should get everything I need, in 7-10 days, they said.

The little tape seals on the box should have a code number printed on them, the problem batch is 39R1. There was a long thread on this problem back in 2012, I am late to the party with it happening to me, LOL.

Thanks, yeah, I need to check my sealed boxes.

I had some of the offending lot numbers too, but when I contacted LEGO to ask about replacing the bags, they wouldn't do it unless I had actually opened the boxes and verified the bag was missing. They said something about a code on the instruction manual. Regardless, I ended up sending them back to LEGO in exchange for some Grand Emporiums. This was a year or two ago. It was amazing how silly they were. They ended up spending more money in shipping me the sets, paying for them to be shipped back, then shipping me the Grand Emporiums than they would have to just send me the bags of pieces in the first place.

There was a big problem with Amazon selling a LOT of the 39R1 batches. I received one of those during the once-in-a-lifetime-mega-modular-dream-sale. I bought FB, PS, and GE that day for like $112/ea, shipped.

When I first called LEGO about the missing pieces, I must have caught someone on a bad day. They insisted that since I ordered from Amazon that I would have to deal with their customer service to resolve the issue. Annoyed, I called right back and another rep sent out the missing bag of parts to me.

Apart from issue with #10197 batch 39R1 are there any other similar sets with known issues. If there are it would be good to have a sticky thread "Known bad set / batch numbers", it could save someone a lot of grief down the road.

#4204 - The Mine batch 2R22 may have bag 2 replaced with a duplicate of bag 1. It did for me on the two that I bought.

It makes it frustrating for people that like to keep their sets sealed until they decide to open and build them. I have many of the modulars but no plans on building them for a couple of years. I'm waiting for my daughter to get old enough to enjoy helping. I don't feel like opening the sets because there is always an outside chance that I may decide to sell it to buy others if something goes crazy high. I don't expect LEGO to be perfect, but knowing there are issues can be a pain for sure. Also, I'd hate to be a few years down the road and LEGO be unwilling or unable to replace parts because it is too far out of production. I will probably need to check some of the sets I plan on keeping just to be sure.

It'd be great to have a page listing missing parts, etc. instead of having to search forum threads. I probably should check some boxes I have in storage.

^ I actually meant sets with bags with release numbers too.

Interesting about the 4204 mine... Have to check the ones I have

I don't think there are enough known quality issues by batch to warrant a master list, such as we currently do with bag counts. We all knew about Fire Brigade and discussed it in detail during its initial release, hence this thread.

I recall multiple postings recently about only one other set in a similar situation, though I don't recall if it were #10220. I dont think I have previously heard about an issue with the Mine and, as a City set, any issue would likely affect quite a few more fans than a modular. That being said, I will wager there are more FB owners than Mine owners here. :o)

The biggest reason to check your sealed sets is IMO due to unseen tampering and not defective packaging.

I just bought my FB set last week, I have only been back into building modulars in the last couple months, so came into it well past the bulk of the conversation about missing bags of parts. I was mostly worried about how long Lego would honor requests for missing bags.
I figure they must know how many sets from the 39R1 batch were packaged, and sold, and how many requests have been made so far on fixing the mistake. Maybe there is a stockpile of the missing bags just waiting for the owners to discover they are missing them. It has been about 3 years since this all came to be known.

I think they will honor missing pieces up to 2 years after a set is retired.

Can't remember which batch my Fire Brigade came from, but it definitely wasn't 39R1 and had a different missing bag (from the middle section). I built it to work out the missing parts, but customer service were able to identify the bag based on my description of some of the more unique items that should have been in it - for instance, the 4x1 black and yellow striped hazard line plate, and the four 2x2 green plates that form the table tennis table, and were then able to generate the full picklist for the bag. So if anyone else has the same problem they can probably do the same.

I bought it the week after it went EOL, so a return wasn't an option, but they were happy enough to send out the missing bag, and to follow that up with a second post-out about a month later when I found that one of the parts on the inventory list didn't actually get picked out and shipped.

I wonder if long term the run that is missing a bag could reach levels of investment return similar to that of a complete set? I mean everyone loves something "unique" especially in this awe inspiring world of LEGO.

This is interesting, 'Brickformula' made a YouTube review of the Fire Brigade set, and at the end, has each bag of parts all laid out...nice! I see exactly the one I am missing, its the sub bag in bag 1. 1.01 102 parts in total. I like his review too..haha.

I had a whole bag missing from my Pet Shop set. Obviously Lego helped me out. It was sealed and brand new from the store, strange.

@BRC I remember this also from a couple years ago. I actually had 2 of one bag as well as was missing one.

If you did it recently, do you know the batch number?

Not surprised, I've watched a production video before and lego first makes batches of bags and then puts them I'm the boxes. I still dream about finding a batch of bag 1's from 10123 ;P

@TheLoneTensor, how do I find that for you? On the box somewhere?

@BRC. The batch number is usually printed with black ink on the tape sealing the boxes. In some instances it is embossed in the card of the box.

I just cracked this open and even on the first page it was clear I was missing one bag and had anther twice, as 3 minifig legs were missing but I had double the amount of torsos. I went on a little further until I didn't have any replacement parts myself.
I called Lego, told them the missing parts and batch number so they were able to indentify the bag and they are sending out a replacement.

    Top!

^ Am relieved.  I honestly thought you were going tell us TLG were out of stock of some of the missing bits.  Happy ending.

If a particular batch is known to have missing parts, it's quite likely that a suitable number of spares are put aside against the day when people finally get around to opening all those unmade sets.

I'm hoping. I have two I plan on building but haven't gotten around to it yet.
  • LegoboyLegoboy Member Posts: 8,827
^^ Unless more claims for spare parts are made than those faulty sets that actually exist.  TLG won't keep them indefinitely.
  • TigerMothTigerMoth Member Posts: 2,343
They probably will keep them indefinitely, if only because there's nothing else they can do with them. However, that doesn't mean there will be a indefinite supply, but the vast majority of problem sets will be rectified when requested, probably even in a few years' time.

Probably won't.  They'll sell them, like they did the Bionical shields required for the Batpod.  What else could they possibly do with them?  TLG sold their emergency supply leaving them with zero inventory before knowing all Bionicle sets had been sold and built.  Lol, they're still on the shelves. ...just! TLG are supposed (by their own standards) to keep parts for sets for up to two years but instead they sold them off.  TLG won't keep parts longer than they have to.  Would rather have the space back, probably.

Wasn't the code on the Fire Brigade boxes missing parts 39R2 or something like that?
  • TigerMothTigerMoth Member Posts: 2,343
There's quite a bit of difference between a bag of apparently random parts and single pieces. More importantly, the customer service hit is vastly different.

    Think it was 39R1

Thanks, sorry I think I have a bit of Star Wars on the brain when thinking of the code :-)

Well, the woman on the phone did say there was a part no longer in stock, but it turned out to be a change in part number - the part in question was the sand 2 x 4 plate for the fire truck, which could have easily been replaced with any other colour as it doesn't show.

Here is the list of parts that were ordered  - presumably the contents of the bag my batch number (not 39R1) was missing:
