How the hell did I miss this?

Looks smaller than the older one.
  • rancorbaitrancorbait Member Posts: 1,842
^ Yeah looks that way. But if I'm not mistaken its dark orange instead of brown this time! :o)

^ Im finding Box images give the impression of sets being smaller than they really are more and more, I think it's down to making the overall art look better in terms of design quality but missing the mark of what makes the product look good on it's own but I'm yet to figure out exactly how this is happening.

My recollection of PM is v bad, I've put up a little bit of a mental block against it so I don't remember much of the film, but what's the white droid thing? looks like it's meant to be a repair droid of some sort?
Design of the set looks nice enough but not being a fan of prequel trilogy it would have to be at a good discount for me to go for this one.

This actually looks like a bit of a step down from the previous edition, but it is still a nice rendition of the vehicle. To be honest I was hoping for an AAT as I think #7662 is just about the closest LEGO have come to creating a perfect Star Wars model.

Nevertheless, I like it and, depending on the price, it could be a winner!

@Shib - The white droid is one of these: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/PK-series_worker_droid They appear only very briefly in the final film, but originally had a slightly more significant role I believe.

Image doesn't appear to be working? Anyone save it?
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
#7662 is definitely better looking. And the new one is still reddish brown. The pictures color is off.

...and I had avoided buying the 7662 back in 2008 for $67 when the local Target put them on clearance.
    /sigh

It's hard to top #7662, as Capn said, that one is near perfection. The rack looks better though. :))

The last 3 waves really are remake mania.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
Here I adjusted the color a bit using an online tool. Not perfect but is closer to real color.

I guess the 'no Star Wars merchandise outside of the OT and Rebels' mandate wasn't cast iron. Might be a promising sign for PT fans. Thankfully my wallet can sigh in relief, because I'm not one of them.

No comparison to 7662, which is an amazing set.
But it does compare nearly 1:1 (I think) in size with 7184 from 2000, and as such is quite a nifty remake.

I know that some of us are tired of remakes, but for those who weren't around when the last MTT came out, this is a great alternative to the secondary market prices on the previous ones, even if does turn out slightly inferior to the second one (we will see).

On remakes: This may be the last hurrah for anything that is not an 'iconic' marker of the SW universe (MF, X-Wing, TIE, Jedi Starfighter, etc.), if the new movies, tie-in shows, and more come together as Disney desires. So, we may look back on these past few years as the last chance for many of the lesser aspects of the SW universe.

A few other remakes worth their time:
    Dagobah
Bespin, but with freeze chamber, jail, and duel scenes (forget the landing pads)

Last, a list of things LEGO hasn't made and I think should be done before they hit the dustbin of SW history:

    Kamino clone factory
Hoth Ion Cannon with Rebel Transport
Jedi Temple with archives and holocron vault

My thoughts as well, OT/PT will probably be the occasional set ,UCS and large playset once in a while next to the new material that will flood the market.

This new set doesn't look vastly different from 7662. It's not like it looks like 7184 (2000).
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ To me it just looks dated compared to #7662 due to using plates on the sides studs out like the new sand crawler. Also the lower side detailing and the "cleaner" look to the droid rack make #7662 an overall better model.

Seems quite a random release compared to the rest of the wave.

The question is this set good enough to bring down the price of #7662, which stands at $385 new ($170 used) on Bricklink? I think it just might be, so anyone with any thoughts of "downgrading" their collection should do so now while prices are in favor of sellers.

I'm going to be honest and say that this looks terrible imho. Looks significantly more like the older rendition than #7662. The color is nice, but otherwise it doesn't appeal to me at all.

Perhaps seeing the set in the flesh will change my opinion, but it looks entirely to "blocky" to me (which seems ironic to say considering it is a LEGO set).

Maybe this is being released so that LEGO can burn through any excess stock of battle droid parts before they start making sets based on the new movies/series. Hopefully battle droids and Gungans have seen their day and will not figure into the forthcoming plot lines.

This set will likely be $99.99, so we will really see what the past 7 years have done to the value (pieces, minifigures, design) included in a LEGO set.

I'm going to guess this is a $119.99 set.

Seems like this year is sad versions of 2007 sets with the AT-AT and now this ;P

    I guess $139.99 USD and $149.99 CAD ;)

    ^I mean 129.99 USD
  • HokieJoe99HokieJoe99 Member Posts: 351
I meant to say at least $99.99. I can hear the screams of outrage now when the price is higher than the last version and the value of the set is not as good.
  • rancorbaitrancorbait Member Posts: 1,842
    I'm gonna guess 89.99 USD and 109.99 CAD ;o)

I'm not too bothered about the studs. It's lego, lego has studs.

I wonder if this is in response to the calls for more minifig dominated SW sets, but keeping them building sets. Make the vehicle with simplistic parts (so plates for sides) and thus as cheap as can be, to make the set at a cheaper price point and so the minifigs better value.

This set seems to suffer from being stuffed into a price point below where it should be. A definitive MTT should cost perhaps £129.99 given today's prices, which I would pay, but this one looks more like an £89.99 set to me, meaning it has cut back on detail and Minifigures.

This could well be a popular set though as many children playing with LEGO today would not have been when #7662 was released, and this is a popular vehicle from the Prequel Trilogy which they will no doubt be familiar with.

The droid carrier from #7929 holds more droids.

The Naboo Security Guard is fantastic, especially the gold printing on his hat. But as a former owner of the previous MTT, this looks pretty lame by comparison.

What is that white droid? I thought this was a fan made design and art but those look like LEGO images to me

Maybe if lego hadn't released the big MTT this would look good :/

It's a PK service droid. Not sure if they ever showed up down on the surface of Naboo in the movie, but they were up on the Trade Federation control ship.

Aside from a few mismatched colors (I may have rushed) I was able to assemble the PK droid and it does look like those little cute service droids though a little black eye print on the head would have been nice ;)

I think one advantage it has over the pervious MTT is the older one had a lot of gray while this one doesn't.
