Sail ho! Early next year a new ship will set sails on the LEGO waters joining Brickbeard’s Bounty and the Black Sea’s Barracuda in the never ending search for treasure. And do you want to know something really awesome? You can help name it! That is right. This is a contest for finding the best name for a LEGO Pirate Ship. Aye, Matey!
From April 7th until April 13st, we invite you to take part in a ‘naming’ competition. The name must be original and cannot have been used before in other commercial relations. You can only suggest five (5) names – so make sure to do some research before suggesting a name.

The Who, What, Where and Why:
•The contest is open to all users 16 years and older holding a ReBrick account.
•To submit an entry: Write your suggestion as a comment to this blog post. You can only suggest five (5) different names. Non-commercial names only.
•The contest begins April 7nd 2014 at 9:00 A.M. Eastern Standard Time (EST) (that’s 15:00 Central European Time). Entries submitted to ReBrick before this date and time will not be accepted into the contest. The competition is open for submissions until April 13st, 2014 at 8:59 A.M. EST (14:59 CET).
•Official Judging will begin at 9:00 A.M. EST on April 14th 2014 and will end at 9:00 A.M. EST on April 30th 2013.
•The team of judges will review the names and select one (1) grand prize winner. The names will be reviewed based on creativity, originality and relation to theme.

    The jury will consist of:
•Frederikke Hoff, Community Editor at the LEGO Group
    •Nicholas Groves, Creative Design Lead
    •Bjarke Lykke Madsen, Senior Designer

All entries and entrants must follow the ReBrick House Rules.

We reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not follow the official rules. Any form of cheating will result in a banning of user profile from ReBrick.

    PRIZES

One (1) grand winner will receive a prize of:
•The chance to have your name suggestion be the name of the actual LEGO pirate ship.
•A signed version of the undisclosed pirate set

Please read the rules in full here.

Happy naming! Let your inner pirate out… Arrr!!

Pirates 5 is coming in 2015. I'm sure we will see new ships. I think The Black Pearl and Queen Anne's Revenge sold well enough to warrant more big ships. They definitely did well in the aftermarket, so o know the desire to have more ships is there.
  • YodaliciousYodalicious Member Posts: 1,366
^ Depends on the collector I suppose. For instance, the Sea Cow has no interest to me as someone who prefers the more 'realistic' ships. Then again, none of the LEGO Movie sets interest me. Too whacky for my taste. Nothing against them, just that I view the Sea Cow and a Pirates-themed ship as two very different things.

Is this another ship with Red and white sails? Can someone explain to LEGO that there are more colors available than this?
  • legomattlegomatt Member Posts: 2,548

I bet 'PotC Flying Dutchman' wouldn't draw many laughs from the judges.
    ;o)

    :o[

As welcome as this news is, I can't help but feel a twinge of annoyance that we've had a big ticket Sea Cow and now this, which suggests TLG think ships are a good move, yet we never saw anything better than virtually cannonless canoes-with-sails for the PotC license, and nothing at all for Davy Jones or the Navy/Trading co.

I do like that we're getting a new ship, but AAAAAGH! How frustrating they never saw fit to test the water (forgive the pun) with a big-ticket multi-layered Dutchman.

I would love a pirate ship of the same size/scale of the IF. Not sure it will happen, but it would be wonderful if it did.
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
I wouldn't expect anything too radical. This will probably be similar to the last Castle rehash. Something fairly generic. With that said we haven't seen a good ol' fashioned Pirate ship from Lego in a few years. I'm enthusiastic if only for my kids to build and play with.
  • TheBigLegoskiTheBigLegoski Member Posts: 1,437
Well they better design something really really really special, because you can only display so many models. Especially huge Lego ships! My number one is still my Imperial Flag Ship, followed by Queen Anne's Revenge. I demolished my Black Pearl a couple of months ago, compared to the other two it is visually far less aesthetic, and I have too little room to display a vast amount of sets anyway. I like my LOTR pirate ship also better then the Black Pearl.

The incentive for me to buy another Lego ship (I have six different Lego sail ships) in the future will be based on whether or not TLC will come up with an innovative design which is different enough (actual design of model as well as colour scheme), and secondary an interesting bunch of new and different varied looking minifigs too.

By the looks of it, it will be another 17th century sail ship. Yet what I really would love to see is a galley; a huge minifig-scale boat, with multiple decks, Mediterranean warship with both sails and oars from classic Roman/Hellenistic antiquity. If TLC can churn out Death Stars, Star Destroyers, Sea Cows, London Bridges, why not a gigantic Galley with at least 20 minifig roman soldiers to man the oars, a captain, a guy to pound the drums, and two other minifigs for rigging the sails and steering the ship, and of course a princess and handmaiden so these minifigs have a reason to start a Trojan war or something like that.

With the release of the latest "Assassin's Creed" game, I am eager to dive back into the world of Lego Pirates. Even if this ship turns out to be more of the shiny-smiley style that has permeated all of Lego's classic theme reboots, it may provide a useful update of parts for recreating some of the ships seen in "Black Flag", including the Jackdaw. Now if only Lego would release a minifigure with a hood piece in white...

^ They already did. Taskmaster in set 76018.

This is great news for Pirates fans! I wonder if we will get a full product range or just a one off set? Pirate fans don't need to wait till 2015 for something to buy. In October Series 12 will probably feature a few all new Pirate minifigs. I don't think it is a coincidence one of the major game worlds is Pirate World. From the gameplay footage so far it looks like vintage LEGOLAND Pirates. There is even a Kraken.

Well it would go down well but you know what I mean.

The Jammy Dodger, especially if its Jack Sparrows boat, :D.

I'm not at all surprised by the timing of this release, but still very interested in seeing what comes out...I'm also interested if the name will be chosen based on the design or if the design will be influenced by the name.
I hope at the very least that they changed the colour theme depending on the name they choose, if they've already got those red colours as a definite then it would be stupid for them to choose a name like "The Black Brick" or any with an animal name that doesn't suit the colours.

I haven't had a pirates theme on general retail since coming out of my dark ages,so very interested in seeing what's to come. I am starting to focus my collecting and I think that pirates stuff will only interest me if I look at the it for value in Mythology displays, so as many have suggested if they did something either greek or fitting with POTC ships I might be interested. I do have the LOTR pirate ship and I enjoyed building that, but I don't think I'll jump at a generic looking pirate ship (if anything I'd more likely get the sea cow than just a generic looking ship - I know that a lot of people would prefer something that looks more like a classic ship and if this works out for them then fair enough, just wouldn't be for me)

I imagine the name will be chosen to fit their existing design seeing as these things seemed to be in process way before release.

It is a slightly strange competition. Come up with an apt name for something that you cannot see yet.
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,477
That's the thing I can't wrap my head around, if they had at least given a "It will be captained by the dastardly Captain such and such" or "Heroic Captain..." at least you would have an idea of what to pitch. Looking at the time scale I'm hoping its a case of they have some concept designs made up with elements that can be changed to match the name, otherwise they would have to pick a name that fits the existing design so one of the criteria for winning will be Luck of guessing what the design will be.

As someone who missed out on the Imperial Flagship, I'm anticipating disappointment in anything by comparison. Still good to see the theme return, though.

Because you know, the red sails on the Black Seas Barracuda have lots to do with black seas or barracudas. =)

^to be fair the colour in that one refers to the seas not nessisarily the vessel (as in The Barracuda that sails the Black Seas) :-P
Personally I'd have gone blue with a barracuda but i don't actually have a clue what they look like. If it was called the Black Barracuda then yes.

I know its not a hard and fast but surely the name should reflect the ship at least a little.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ I know the color is for the seas, it was just a good example that had color in the name as well as an animal, where neither are represented by the sail color =)
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,477
I agree with you there, its a good example of that, but it still seems that had that been called the Black Barracuda then the red on the sails would be less justifiable.

I'm sure that the designers could take into account colour changes to suit the name while putting concepts together, so as i say i hope this is the case.

@Shib Maybe the ship originally had red sails, or black, lost them in battle, and replaced them with another set from a salvaged ship... who knows what shenanigans pirates get up to?

Aaargh! Bosun, couldn't you find a pair o'sails to match me' ships' name?!

Aaargh! sorry Cap'n, was all I could scavenge.

Aaargh! Bosun... but PINK Bloomers for a flag, who's going ta' be scared o' that?

AArgh! men afraid o' commitment? ...it's those attracted by 'em i'd be worried about! Yaargh!

    Yaargh!

But I'd imagine it's probably going to be quite a generic pirate ship, so virtually any name will work.

Maybe that should be part of the name's charm :o) The 'I-See-No Ship', or The 'Sight Unseen'. lol. I think I might enter... :oP

@legomatt‌ I think your suggestions would get my vote! and I agree it probably will be quite generic in design but would be nice if they have the scope to alter things to fit in terms of colour, prints used on flag pieces etc.

If names are to be based on visual aspects, and the image is all we have to go by, then how about....

The Yellow Box or The Yellow Box of __________ (fill in the blank with Death, Pirates, etc) or The Yellow Scourge .....

@Shib Barracuda are a silvery-blue colour, very well camouflaged against the water. The small ones seem to be ambush predators, and like to hang around on the edge of the shadow cast by a boat.
And even at less than a metre long, they have lots of teeth, and will stare you down!

Unless you're an American Indian, or so the legend goes at any rate...

    It's a BOY!
Thank you. I shall name him... aahh *looks around* ...Angry Wild Bear.

Apparently this 'say what you see' naming convention was the origin of the gameshow 'Catchphrase'. ;o)

There has to be a small raft in the $10-20 range and shark to go along with it. Every Pirates line needs one of those.

I concur. Every Pirates set should have a random sausage thrown in as well :)

I was always a big fan of the Pirates theme, but unfortunately I am selling my entire collection to someone who like Classic Pirates way more than I do. I almost caved in a kept my POTC ships, but I had to let them go.

I don't know if I would buy an El Dorado remake. If I did, it would have to be impressive. I felt Pirates II was a bit "juniorized".

  • piratemania7piratemania7 Member Posts: 2,146
If there is a large ship I am sure there will be some large soldier "fort"; fingers crossed it's larger than the last - and no not a sausage but the fort! : )

^^ Interestingly I would have said #6242 Soldiers' Fort is less juniorized than #6276 Eldorado Fortress, although less substantial. In fact apart from the island in #6241 Loot Island the whole range was surprisingly good - perhaps even better than classic pirates! I know heresy.

I know I know, but the whole range (apart from that horrible base thing in Loot Island) is pretty good. Sure the ship is smaller, but it was also remarkably cheap. The minifigures are excellent, especially the soldiers - and it gave us #10210 the Imperial Flagship (in so much as it wouldn't have existed without them). Having built almost all the classic pirates and the more recent range for the first time this last 12 months, the recent range really holds its own - apart from the shiny rubbery plastic flags.

Sure it doesn't match the trading post, or skulls eye schooner, but only because they didn't release a set at that kind of scale. Looking at the way they built the fort they really could have done and it would have been excellent. I loved building the Eldorado Fortress, it harked back to my youth, but truthfully, looking at it objectively and forgetting its history. It wasn't that great. (The trading post really was that great).

That said, i still have an amazing, perhaps never even built, parts still pristine, inner tray complete (but opened), box in great condition, as good a 'used' set as you'll ever see #6285 to sell if anyones interested!

  • piratemania7piratemania7 Member Posts: 2,146
I can see your points above, myself, I am a die hard Classic Pirates fan but respect your take on the updated theme. It just isn't on the scale that The Classic's were. Be it their scale, the nostalgia or what have you I think very little if anything compares.

The Imperial Flagship may be associated with this latest wave but it was always in the Exclusives category for me. Personally I found this latest wave to be a great army building feeding frenzy for me to be able to one day layout a great island/port diorama.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
Not that it's an option, but I always thought there'd be another wave of POTC with not only the Dutchman, but also a nice Tortuga set.

Of course, as a result, I'd also like to see a Michael Bolton POTC minifig too, and that's all I'll say for now.
