Awesome! Spider bites looks great, but leather head seems a bit small.

I don't remember the turtles wearing costumes in the cartoon though.

Oh, and I love that they're making their submarine!

That submarine actually looks quite nice, the first wave was hit and miss but I like what I am seeing so far!

I like the use of 4 of the new Chima spider legs here... sigh, sorry wallet, I will have to pick some of these up at some point. Looks like the release date's in May for these sets.

I've only collected the minifigs from this series and I still don't see anything thats making me want to build the sets. I'm sure I'll pick up the figures at some point though.

What? I thought these sets didn't do that well in 2013. Another year of sets? Rather odd.
  • binaryeyebinaryeye Member Posts: 1,831
^ It probably doesn't matter too much how well the sets did so much as TMNT is very popular right now. There is also a movie coming out next summer, on which I believe a few of the sets will be based.

I know I do not want the movie mf. I am debating on the nickelodeon ones for this year. Are they worth it?
  • y2joshy2josh Member Posts: 1,996
As far as I could gather from the trailer... the movie turtles are like twice as big as humans and stomp around like the Hulk (which is sheer idiocy). So shouldn't they have gone with maxifigs here?

hothbricks (i think it was) had a better-than-low res/small MOVIE set images where you can just about make out the detail on the figs, and their minifig head 'shapes', which are... interesting.

I'll reserve final judgement for better high-res close-ups, but initial reaction to what i could make out was those turtle figs are some ugly looking dudes. I'll be sticking with the light-hearted cartoony ones... unless I get a sudden urge for a realistic turtle-like man-creature to appear in a superheroes moc, or star wars bar.

Photos are also now available for #79117.

It's refreshing to see an actual playset without so much emphasis on vehicles. Unfortunately, the design of the Turtles just looks bad; but that's not LEGO's fault.

I really don't like the positioning of the shells, I get why they've done that but it just looks wrong.

I can't help but think the dual-universe thing is simply going to confuse kids who get the "movie" sets, expecting the cartoon versions. "Daddy, why are Mikey and Raph so ugly?"

I too have given pause to question the wisdom behind having two concurrent releases of the same IP (so to speak).

On the one hand it caters to all turtle-based interests, movie sets for movie fans, cartoon/traditional fans may prefer the cartoony versions, and so both groups are served. But ultimately i can't escape the feeling that sales of the cartoon versions may just have already eaten into the potential the film versions may have had, and possibly a little vice versa (if some kids abandon the cartoon version for the movie), as i'd imagine the average fan is going to pick their preferred style and stick with it, which would mean a split fanbase and poorer returns for both.

They'll probably do just fine, but if they tank, I can imagine this very situation might be the prime suspect as to why.

^ I hope they do tank so I can pick them up on clearance. I like the cartoony ones better as I grew up with the original movies and cartoon which are still the best versions, but would like to add these to my collection as well. I like the design of the van in the one set.

I agree..I think other Superhero sets have movie and comic/cartoon versions that work because they are n ot too different from each other, but these are rather drastic.

Because Ninja Turtles apparently do not age well son... After all they are no longer teens...

I can't help but feel that the sales of the movie sets will be more dependant on how well the film does.

But also I think these look as mix able as the Star Wars clone wars sets are with the regular, I don't think kids will mind but anyone who wants pieces for display are more likely to pick one or the other.

No difference at all between clone wars sets and movie sets being out at the same time.

So far the movie sets look superior in every way compared to the cartoon ones which look abysmal to me.

^ Technically true. I did consider Star Wars as a comparison, but in reality nothing really compares to star wars, as it's a beast of a license with so much market presence from so many avenues that they produce an almost 'feedback loop' on it's own output, which makes it a different animal to other licenses.

Personally I did not collect Star Wars Clone Wars sets because of the cartoon eyes. Marvel and DC sets are movie and cartoon based sets.

I agree for the most part, but think the biggest difference is that Star Wars has so many sets and figures that there's dillution. With only a handful of sets of each Turtle line, it's much more obvious.

Plus, the Clone Wars were in the same canon for the most part with the rest of the entire Star Wars universe. As for the Turtles, the characters may be mostly the same, but it's really an alternate universe between the cartoon and the movie.
