I gave up waiting for Wolverine's Chopper Showdown on sale because I could never find it, lol. When I actually did see it there was only one left and now I'm glad I bought it at retail price. I also picked up this one for $16 for Nightwing alone.
  • starwarfan77starwarfan77 Member Posts: 341
#6866 was on discount for 16.16 on amazon for more than few months... of 2013 around june

#70011 just came out in december 2013.(reason i said dec 2013 is because i saw it in target during xmas time)

it has a good year left on it no?

I think to call this the next chopper showdown is a bit of a stretch. Unless you are solely referring to how long it may be out for.

It's been $16 for 2 or 3 weeks now...since Walmarts Rollback Madness. There's more sets on 'rollback'. Mostly some of the $19.99 City sets now down to $16 and the Friends Bakery #41006 down to $24.88. I never posted anything because I normally don't get excited for $3.99 discount.

It doesn't look like much, but it's a 20% drop, and that's pretty good. If the Riddler Chase or Joker Steamroller dropped 20%, people would get excited.

Also, I'm not sure how it's like a Wolverine Chopper Showdown, either. Maybe for Nightwing? This is his only set, right? It sure couldn't be for Man-Bat, could it?

Right, a smallish Walmart sale buried somewhere in a TRU sale thread, identified by neither the actual name of the set, nor the number. How on Earth did I miss it?

I have an idea. How about we promote a sale for those who might be interested in it, or might have missed it in some other thread. I think that might be better than making fun of it. I wonder how many sale posts get not-posted because people are not interested in getting poo'd upon if they happen to post a sale that everyone apparently knows about, or didn't think it's worth posting because it's not wow enough*. The admins around here are smart enough to know when to merge threads.

For those thinking this is "only $3.99" and wondering why I'm calling it the next WCS, I'm not afraid to toss out a bold prediction. Nightwing is a character in a very unique space - obscure enough from mainstream but enormously popular in comic circles, just like say...Deadpool. Given it's also a $20 set, it's not hard to draw a comparison. Buy it or not, it's up to you.

    * Everyone didn't know about it; Some people think it's a good deal.

yeah sure... it might be a hit but not right now may be in mid/late 2015 when it might reach $50 range... that's a whole lot of another 9 month at least..

if one is in love for a set then any price/time is justified for buying it.

but if one is talking from purely reselling perspective, which i think you are alluring to we still have a whole summer left and etc... and for the set that just came out 3 months ago i don't see any point to run down the hill to hoard it just now... :D .. its just my feeling..

fwiw, i do own 3 sets of #70011..... that's because i like the set and not to resell :D.
i would say the same for #6866 .. but if it reaches $100.. i will surely sell those 3 as well :P

I'm not talking about reselling, because it's not kosher to talk about that kinda thing in these threads. I'm simply talking about getting a nice set at a nice price that will likely be much harder to get when it does retire, which could be tomorrow, or could be years down the road.

Not all sales have to be about retiring modulars.

I realized I didn't own #6866 set and decided to place a Buy-It-Now bid on eBay to secure the set. Sometimes, I get confused on if I own a set or not. In this case, it's one I wanted but never got around to purchase. Paid more than I wanted, but that's the price you pay when you miss out on buying when in stock.

The saddest part of this thread is that my mother is an assistant manager at a Walmart and yet I have no idea about ANY Lego sale or clearance. I rely on these posts to learn about ANY sales going on at Wally-World.

So, I thank you for the post @TheLoneTensor.

It's too bad that Margot decided to leave Brickset. She's a much bigger asset to the forum than I am. I know I ticked her off, but that's the internet. Some of us say things harshly and others take things too literally and personally.

Confirmed $16 price tag in-store today, so you don't have to do store pickup from the website. Thank for the heads up @TheLoneTensor‌ ! I wasn't planning on getting this one right away, but that price is too good to pass up.

its available to buy from walmart.com now... that must be the reason amazon.com matched the price.

you should be able to get it from both .. even if its not in the store...

i still don't think this set will run out.... so soon. and i still think this set has full if not another 9 months of life left...

Well, just in case someone here is a Kmart-smart shopper...

    Quick run down:
    - Kmart also have the set for $16.
    - (YMMV) Several coupons available including $10pts-for-$50, 5off50, etc.
    - (YMMV) Surprise points (I got $5)
    - (YMMV) 20% off gift cards (stock up at Chase Ultimate Rewards or DiscoverCard)
    - Of course, cashback websites

For me, I got 4x sets for almost 50% off (that's including tax).

Disclamer: Ok, if there isn't enough YMMVs, I want to clarify that I know most people cannot replicate what I did above. I got thumbs downs in deal sites cause folks are mad, implying I'm providing useless info for them. I'm just sharing... so please be kind. ^_^

Side note: since Kmart RARELY price match other retailers, it makes me think that $16 price is going to be the new "normal" price for the set.

we will see in time (2015) how the bold prediction of this faring like #6866 :) ..

i seem to think that from reseller's perspective this looks like the dud of the new super heroes that's why all retailers are discounting @ least for now. it has to be the non-seller.....

but its a fine set to own and build....

^ I think you calling it a "dud" is far bolder than what I predicted. By that token, after this thing retires, you are implying that people who missed out on Nightwing will be able to pick it up for $16? What is your basis for this? Retailer pricing? That's one of the weakest speculative tools we have. Plus, you are reading the discount as that retailers have deemed it a dud, rather than maybe they are trying to just move stock, or get people excited about Lego by designating it a loss-leader, or maybe it's retailerS simply because of competitive price matching, and not that everyone has designated this set to be a dud. To draw a comparison, Amazon had the Fire Brigade sitting at $119 for a very long time. Is that a dud?

And, not to imply that one way is "bad" or another "good" but @starwarfan77‌, why do you put your response first, then the thing you're quoting later. I'm honestly curious. I ask this because I find that I read your comment, then the quote, and as a result, I'm comprehending your discussions in a reverse manner than what I normally read...well, most everything else in this world.

I always wondered why his comments were first and then the quote. I thought maybe @starwarsfan77 was in some sort bizzaro world or something.

I have to say, this thread should only be about the set being available at a good price. Anything more than this and it is likely going to turn into a reselling thread piece. Especially if the sale is over and the thread stays open.

I am consciously keeping my comments out of the reselling mode, so anyone suggesting otherwise is looking further than I was taking it, so let's not make it something it's not. I'm simply talking about people picking it (it being one or a couple) up now for themselves as opposed to being gouged later. Honestly, this is actually an anti-reselling discussion.

i have also mentioned before that if one wants to own and build then any price can be justified i.e. $19.99 or $16.00. don't make a difference.

^ I think you calling it a "dud" is far bolder than what I predicted. By that token, after this thing retires, you are implying that people who missed out on Nightwing will be able to pick it up for $16? What is your basis for this? Retailer pricing? To draw a comparison, Amazon had the Fire Brigade sitting at $119 for a very long time. Is that a dud?

depends of one's definition of dud. it was available @ $119 from amazon. it was @ december of 2012. It was available from S&H till nov 2013. RRP was $149.

Today i.e 2014.04.05 = amazon lowest price = $287.99 after commission, fees, shipping one would net about $220.

    @TheLoneTensor Preferred Scenario:
    Purchased on 2012.12.01 = $119.
Sold on 2014.04.05 = $220. ($287.99 after commission, fees, shipping one would net about $220.)
    Profit = $100
its invested over 16 months and annualized ROI = 57.952%

    Second scenario:
    Puchased on 2013.11.01 = $149
Sold on 2014.04.05 = $220. ($287.99 after commission, fees, shipping one would net about $220.)
    Profit = $71
invested over roughly 5 months and annualized ROI = 148.747%

refer to calculator @ https://www.dinkytown.net/java/AnnualReturn.html for more details. this should give a very good perspective on which method of investment is preferred.... for me the first way is a "DUD" and i would prefer second.

i don't think the tommy and sammy care much nor their parents and grand-parents.
I am not sure that majority of parents and/or grandparents would looks for a discount to buy something which are meant to be a discretionary spend to splurge on their loved ones. lets not talk about the exceptions i.e. those few percentage who might be doing that. on top of that give it a break its not a $100 set so i don't think much of the people are thinking about the cost and saving on this one.

whoever wants one and wanted one they bought it @ 19.99 from the retailers during x-mas and etc...

now me calling it a DUD from resellers perspective is guided by the same explanation i gave above. this set has good 6-9 months or even more of life left. so why would any reseller would buy this @ 16.00 wait till 2015 locking their investment. i am pretty sure most of them would prefer to buy @ 19.99 closer to nov-dec time.

there is no way this will be close to #6866 that's all i am infering. #6866 is one of a kind and no one saw it coming probably same with #6868 that's why the appreciation.

with regard to super-heroes after that, i am pretty sure they are being hoarded in tons tons and the return won't be close to what we saw with the first wave. i am pretty sure this aspect and everything i said above are covered in some other thread hence i truly apologize for not including citation...

I can only speculate that the "bold" comment was referring to the fact that people waiting for Wolverine to go on sale waited too long because once it did, there were none to be found. The suggestion that one might want to grab The Man-Bat attack now while it is one sale, was just to alert people to the fact that this "might very well" go the way of Wolverine Chopper Showdown. To me, it was just an inference...an educated guess based on previous data. All of a sudden, it turned into a reselling discussion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. If one doesn't like the opinion, maybe one should message the person asking them why they think the persons opinion is wrong instead of publicly lambasting the person in the thread.
