Well let's see: price was $199.99, 20% off brings it to $160, $10 off Rewards, 6% tax brings the total to $158.99. I paid $132.20 with the card I got for 15% off, so to account would we just take 15% off the total? That would equal $135.14 or about 39% off RRP of $220 (or about 42% off the total $233.20 with tax). Not counting the GC I got in return, cuz I couldn't use it then and there. Hope I did that right. Bad math in public is embarrassing no matter how old you are.

Sounds good to me, especially on such a great set. Nothing like stacking stuff like that GC firesale. Maybe this way we could all finally get those exclusives for 27% off.

Is #40009 still scanning at $199.99 in store ? A new 20% off coupon is available until 3/22.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
@ColoradoBricks I believe so. I know it still had that label on the shelf today when I was there. Ended up picking up a Unimog instead though for about $154 with the 20% coupon and reward $ and a discounted GC. Not the best, but since it is retired I thought it was a decent discount.

Popping into TRU I noticed that a whole bunch of sets were marked as "Hot Price" with red-lettered stickers indicating such on the shelves. Most every Chima set (even smaller sets) as well as all expensive Technic sets (anything over $100, including the mobile crane) and a smattering of other themes.

Even if it's temporary due to the generic 20% off coupon they have going right now, it's still quite annoying.

I wish I could still find the Unimog. =(

At this rate, the whole LEGO section will become one big Hot Price exclusion, probably trying to recover from the actual deals they provided in the last few months.

My TRU has many sets at LEGO MSRP surprisingly. As mentioned in another thread they are also matching Lego.com pricing. Might buy more LEGO at TRU this year than in past years.

I noticed this as well and likely covered >50% of all sets. Why don't they just take TLG's own exclusions policy to the extreme and make the entire LEGO section a "will never discount" area.

That is the main issue I have with TRU, they are playing a shell game with prices and you would think there was a law against this somewhere in the books.
This reminds me of Borders handing out 40% off coupons, but all of their LEGO was about 30% over RRP

It's no surprise to me most of the large corporations that have huge gimmicky pricing have all gone out of business in the last few years. I went into TRU and literally could not find one set that was not already cheaper on Amazon. What good is 20% off. LOL

I still wonder about Kohls and Joanna's they have constant gimmicky sales with coupons yet they seem to rake in the cash... I guess it's because it actually lowers msrp?

The thing I don't like the most is that TRU plays games by changing the base properties of things. Like @madforLego said, a shell game. Retail shell games are common (Bed Bath & Beyond could charge 20% less on everything, but they'd rather keep pumping out their coupons for perceived value), but when TRU fiddles with things that shouldn't change (base price or exclusions), well that's just plain deception.

Example 1: Last week, no Technic set was a Hot Price in-store (either by the red sticker or the "HP" listed on the shelf sticker). This week, most every Technic set has both indications on the shelf sticker.

Example 2: A month or so age, the Emerald Express was $5.99 regular price, then it suddenly moved to $6.99 at the exact same time a 20% off Lego sale happened.

So you have no idea week-to-week knowing what is or is not a "hot price" item, nor the original price to figure out your discount. Sometimes you don't even know until you get into the actual store, because online isn't reliable either. Right now online at TRU, the Mobile Crane is listed for $239.99 on sale for $219.99. In-store (at least in a couple Michigan stores) it's listed on the shelf sticker for $199.99.

    Stupid TRU.

There's not much need to get mad at TRU. If they were the only shop in town that sold Lego then sure. Last winter they had a few good one day sales that I took advantage of. Otherwise, I shop elsewhere.
  • adol7adol7 Member Posts: 150
They're the only shop in town that'll accept my Rewards* :p

*Expires soon, not valid on 99% of items, maybe cause irritable bowel, internal bleeding and possibly death.

Amazon visa rewards work towards anything on Amazon... even third party sellers. No game no gimmicks. nuff said.

^- Sounds a bit scammy to me...
  • Gooker1Gooker1 Member Posts: 599
Based on that feedback, I don't think it's scammy at all. Generally most items that are store credits or gift cards sell for 10-20% less than the actual value.

    I guess you're right

I think GiftCardMall operates many of the grocery store's gift card kiosks.

@shouldaville thanks for the heads up! These deals are always worth posting.

Wow, swung by TRU in Stockton, CA and they have 7 or 8 City Marinas (4644) on clearance. Haven't seen those in a long time. Brown sticker is supposed to be 30% off, but the price scanners weren't working.

I didn't buy any, so I don't know if the 20% off would work. It doesn't look like there's any marking of Hot Price and I wasn't sure if Clearance is excluded.

I did not think TRU could be any more ridiculous but seeing the GE PS and PC online for 189.99 really set the bar to a new high
  • BrickarmorBrickarmor Member Posts: 1,258
^They read here that it's EOLing. But yeah, I saw that the other day and... well, did nothing because the real shocker was that they kept them at RRP for so long.
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
I was able to use the 20% off coupon today. They scanned it right off my phone using the one Margot posted. They also price match now. At least from their own website.

They also have 70011 Chima Eagle's Castle on sale for $22.50 which is 50% TRU / 45% RRP. It's retired at S@H, so if you missed it...

used the new 20% coupon on the #42009 along with a $5 off. System didn't take the 20%, the manager that was behind the cashier override it without even me saying anything. Was trying a new store and got pleasantly surprised.
