    Alright I'll start :)

Not sure how much detail people want, but since I advised that I'll take up the challenge I have already spent most of the $185AUD.

First purchase was a Dino HQ #5887 for $110AUD at a "Big W" (Department store). Box isn't perfect but still pretty good and sealed. I assume it was a return or found out the back.

On my Christmas holiday travels visiting family I managed to pick up 5 #5001709 Clone Trooper Lieutenants at a small rural toy store for $2 each. Wasn't expecting to find those and not at $2.

Lastly I bought 2 boxes of series 1 Friends Animals from Coles supermarket, these were on clearance for $1.25 a bag, normal retail is $5.99.

So total spent was $180AUD, I'll be flipping these on eBay. Going forward I hope to buy and sell at least something once a month thought out the year, but this will all depend on the time I have available and if I find any good deals.

    Good luck every one.

Wow, that's a good list. Credit to all those taking part.

    Nice work @Basta

I hope the competitors will keep us informed of their activities in some way or other (enough to follow their ups and down, without giving away trade secrets of course).

It'll be great to see how totals are arrived at, strategies each adopts, etc... like watching a wacky race.
  • OK - my turn...

As with @Basta I managed to find some older gems lurking around in the dark recesses of the local toy chains.

    So far I have:

    2 x 4867: Hogwarts @ R 449 each (~ £26)
    2 x 4866: The Knight Bus @ R 299 each (~£18)

For a total of R 1496 leaving a balance of R 204. This will be used to fund postage for these sets, as I will most likely be selling them into the UK market given the high level of Potter love over there :)

If I can flip these in the next few months, I have my eye on some retired WV stock, which ultimately may lead to a deal on a very tatty, but sealed, mystery set, that perhaps has the word Imperial in the title :)

I like the 'at least one deal a month' cadence - hopefully I can also link some trading to business travel to cut out those pesky shipping charges (although that might be cheating slightly).

Looks like the Southern Hemisphere has come out swinging !

This is going to be exciting to watch!

Out of interest, and if it doesn't give away too much with regards to strategy - what's everyone's preferred plan for selling? Off to the ebay, or bricklink, or the marketplace on here? I'd guess that higher viewings and a higher sale price would come from the former. but will that be negated by the fees? Would bricksetters be happy to pay a little more, knowing it's all for a good cause? (I'm asking partly because I'm curious, but also @simon_ratcliffe_101 - I'd potentially be interested in taking some HP off your hands... ;) )

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this unfold! Good luck everyone.
  • rancorbaitrancorbait Member Posts: 1,842
@SirKevbags The the rest of us could place bets on who is going to win and then all profit goes to Fairy bricks, and the winner of the bets gets the 'most successful gambler' title!

    :-P

@cheeka - I plan on using Ebay, bricklink, Craigslist and Brickset. Don't think I won't tug at the Bricksetter's collective heartstrings a few times ;)

    Cheeka
  • CheekaCheeka Member Posts: 236
Whelp, I for one am a sucker for these charity drives, so my heartstrings are ready to be tugged... especially as I was too chicken to join in!

I'd like to think I'm not the only one here with that sentiment, so c'mon competitors - get your Marketplace threads up! :)
  • BastaBasta Member Posts: 1,259
Being that I am sitting south of the equator and most Brickseters are north postage will be somewhat restrictive. I may offer up the Clone troopers though as postage may only be $2.60 for those.

Generally I'll just go my usual selling route which is eBay.
  • As long as @SirKevBags approves - I am quite happy to list things in the Marketplace.

Perhaps we can use a tag to identify listings related to the challenge. Maybe [RC2014] as a preface for the listings ?

Shipping can be a little costly, but I generally adjust pricing to compensate for this. It also helps when your currency is performing rather poorly :)

^^ If you use a tag, I think RC2014 sounds a bit confusing. People unaware of the challenge might mistake it for a product code of some sort. I would suggest a 'what it says on the tin' approach.

Example, link to this thread, with 'Charity' as the keyword. e.g.

For Charity Millennium Falcon $100 #10179

Or something like that, anyway. Just an idea.

  • ^^ good call - RC2014 is rather cryptic.

I purchased the following at a TRU Express that was closing up for the season.
1x#75104 (Hoth), 1x#6857 (Funhouse), 1x#9490 (Droid Escape), 1x#79108 (LR Stage coach), 1x#9466 (MF Scientist), 1x#9463 (MF Werewolf), and 1x#9462 (Mummy). I paid $162.00 USD for all of them. Currently, all are listed in my Bricklink store (Brick Bazaar) but I'll be putting the MF's on Ebay as a bundle soon.

If there are enough listings to warrant it, I may create a special marketplace category that we can link to easier. Of course, I may also sink all your threads and keep mine on the top :p

  • Ok - HP sets posted in the Marketplace - let's see how it goes :)
  • scrumperscrumper Member Posts: 317
I've bought some reduced sets from ASDA, sold a couple and part exchanged one with someone from eBay.

    I currently have:

    1 #31010 creator treehouse
    7 #7688 sports plane

I've sold things on eBay before so I'll use that but will also try selling on Brickset Marketplace. My plan is to buy/sell lower price items to minimize the effect of my inevitable mistakes but mostly I'll be making it up as I go along with my fingers crossed.

For the sake of clarity. I recommend the following marketplace format:

For Sale (Charity): 10179 UCS Falcon NISB
  • Thanks to @cheeka for taking the first half of Harry Potter off my hands :) Looks like the remainder will be heading to eBay.

^like the spreadsheet idea, although it is more interesting with 18 sets to show.

Sadly polybags are pretty much completely absent from the South African scene.

All players, I need to ask you something. I've had a late request to join the challenge. A well established member so not someone joining the party to rip anyone off or ruin the contest. Does anyone object to their inclusion? Speak in the next 48 hours or forever hold your peace :-)

For the record I have no issue with it because it's only a week or so into things.

It's all for chaaaridy, mate. So the more the merrier I say. Let 'em have a go. (I don't know who it is, this is a totally impartial opinion, which I hold true for any late entrant).

    :o)

The more, the merrier. I say let them play!

I dont mind if you take additional participants all the way up until the final minute of the contest. For the integrity of the competition, only sales that occur after they join should be counted, but as I've said before, it's all for charity so even integrity can take a backseat if it raises more money and everyone is ok with it.

^Agreed, this is all for charity.

No problem with late inclusions. As already stated, the more the merrier. My first items will be hitting eBay tonight. :)
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
Thanks folks. I couldn't see anyone having a concern but thought it was only fair to ask those involved. I'll leave it for the full time period though to give everyone a chance to see it.

My first lot of Reseller Challenge items have been listed on eBay.

I've priced them pretty competitive compared to other eBay AU prices. I was going to post the Clone Trooper Lieutenants #5001709 in the market place, but as these are selling for about $11 AUD on bricklink I don't think that it worth it as AU eBay seems to be a fair bit higher, plus postage to OS would be more.

The friends polys may be a tough sell as there has been a flood of these since a lot of people obviously got the same deal I did :) I'm selling as complete boxes (saves sending out potentially 48 individual $5 items as well) hopefully that will be a point of difference. not to worry though I have time :)

Dino Defence HQ #5887 should do ok. Only 4 Australian Listings and they are all for more than mine.

For any one interested in seeing how they go, you can view the listings here:

    Lego Clone Trooper Lieutenant polybag
Full box of Series 1 Friends Animals
    Lego Dino Defence HQ

Gone beyond 48 hours and I've had no objections so.........

Stepping in from the idealistic academic halls to the nasty world of profit and loss, arriving with a large grin on his face, please everyone welcome @cheshirecat to the reseller challenge!

I've created a sub-category of Marketplace for charitable listings:
    http://www.bricksetforum.com/categories/charity-sales

I've moved the current listings there. It should be a little easier to direct people to this category. Let me know if anyone sees any issues.

^ Good sale to sneak in before Thursday :-)
  • scrumperscrumper Member Posts: 317
@SirKevBags Do you want anything other than our current cash on hand for the monthly figures?
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
@scrumper All I need is your amount of current cash held over and above your initial investment. All the rest can be posted here for folks to analyse if players want to.

Now obviously some people could have made sales and already re invested the profit so they could have zero cash but more stock etc.

I'm excited to announce a kickstart in the competition. I'm awaiting the arrival of 2 new but without stickers Green Grocers, that I bought from a new Bricklink seller for 50€ each. I'm glad that I could snatch them before anyone else did!

    Not really. ;-)

But I am indeed waiting for the arrival of my material. I won't be able to disclose it until I get everything set up, by it will be fun!
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Member Posts: 4,027
Just a reminder to pm your totals today folks to avoid being listed with NR (Not Received) next to your name. Punishment involves M*** B*****
