Everything was marked down already when they opened last year.

Yeah, discounts were already in the system. Many stores were just really slow to get signs actually put up to let customers know.

So I have some time to kill before Barnes and Nobles opens and I'm right by a Kmart. Do they ever have day after Christmas markdowns?
  • legogregorslegogregors Member Posts: 402
Was something advertised for Barnes and Noble or are there stacking coupons?
  • Thanos75Thanos75 Member Posts: 1,120
Barnes and Noble is having the "anything with a red sticker is 50% off" sale.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
Lol, oh well. Three Walmarts and no go. Excited to go home and spend the day with the family. Errrr, maybe I'll hit one Lego Store since they open soon.
  • mooman66mooman66 Member Posts: 122
Found #60003 at Sam's Club for $19.97. Not sure if it was a return as it was the only set in the store.
  • intromissionintromission Member Posts: 197
2 Walmarts that have consistently had 50% off the last 2 years (upon opening) have nothing going on this year. Shelves were pretty bare. I really think that 30% off and the pricing fiasco have something to do with it.

I talked to my girlfriend uncle who works at Walmart and he said they are not doing it, not sure if he means not posted right now or not doing it at all.
  • Thanos75Thanos75 Member Posts: 1,120
Only thing Kmart had was a big yellow sign saying 50% off clearance marked toys starting 12/26---1/11
  • mooman66mooman66 Member Posts: 122
    According to USA today:
    • Items 25% to 50% off. Wal-Mart stores will have "thousands" of items at 25% to 50% off, says McKinney. Among them: a Nintendo 3DS XL System for $199.96 — plus a $50 Wal-Mart gift card, with purchase

    ...just not Lego.
  • red237red237 Member Posts: 335
Shelves are nearly bare near me. Found some larger Chima at 20% off, and left them there! Western Mass, fyi. Good luck everyone. I know better, but am probably going to go to an out of the way one soon too, so i can end my obsession today!

This is the time of year where stock doesn't move. So just wait awhile, and the deals will appear.

    One shelf-worn #9497 Republic Striker-class Starfighter for $21.50.

Tons of the #30242 Republic Frigate polybag at $3.99. Sitting on some rusty old cart in a cardboard box with the top ripped off; I cannot fathom why they didn't fly off the shelves with such an appealing display.
  • Thanos75Thanos75 Member Posts: 1,120
Nothing at barnes and Noble other then some Chima Speedorz at 40% off
  • kim43235kim43235 Member Posts: 165
Thanks guys. Saved my time to travel to WMs at least for now. Maybe time to hit Kroger or Meijer. I'll report some if any good deals.
  • BuriedinBricksBuriedinBricks Member Posts: 1,367
Wife just called from Target. Nothing impressive, but she did find a few copies of #30270 in the stocking stuffer section for $2.

I mentioned in another thread a week or so back, I was simply not expecting good after clearance sales due to how pricing was handled before Christmas. When I stopped by Walmart a week mind a half back, their lego aisle was highly empty anyway.

The results people are finding so far are not surprising to me.

Pretty bad when the most exciting thing I got at the LEGO store today was the VW Van polys for $3.98 and redeemed the free PAB box. Pre Vizla was marked 33% off. The stock of WV Cottage was completely gone now. WV Market was stacked on the floor and loaded all over the shelves...I've never seen that much stock out for one set.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,837
Thee Walmart's (looking for the Rapunzel Infinity piece) and no LEGO on sale, except for the Silver mine shootout at 62 dollars
This is a good thing, considering what I spent at LEGO at 12am.
  • goshe7goshe7 Member Posts: 515
Was WV market marked down at all? Cottage was gone from my store before Xmas.

No, WVM was still full price. I can't imagine those will move quickly at full price after Christmas. I was surprised the Cottage was sold out. They had a lot of stock last week. My sister in law (who knows very little about LEGO) actually went to buy the Market last week and they talked her into the Cottage since it was going away. I'm sure that helped to move the final Cottages.

No major discounts at the 2 WM's I checked either, but I was able to pick up a #76012 Riddler Chase. The new Flash minifig definitely makes up for having to deal with all the crazies out today. :)
  • oansunoansun Member Posts: 87
Nothing at My WM's, or Kroger Marketplaces, or Meijer's (whatever Lone Ranger stuff they have looks like 20% off). Nothing at one Target, but the other had 9450 Epic Dragon Battle for $90 (passed) and 9500 Sith Interceptor for $63 (already had). Silver Mine Shootout for $48. Some of the Sith Trooper packs 75001 for $10.49. So, not a great run.

    Target Clearance -
#30270 is $1.99 - Tons of stock in my local stores (Will definitely make it to 70% off in many locations.)
#30106 is $1.99 - Average stock locally. (May make it to 70% off in some stores.)
#40034 is $2.49 - Very limited stock locally. I found 6 total of these items in 5 different stores.
#60010 is $17.48 - I only saw these at one store. They had 3 of them.

I didn't pay attention to much else. There was some Star Wars for 15% off and a few Chima sets for 30% off.

The general "rules" on Clearance at Target:
    - If it starts at 15% off, it will eventually go to 30% and end at 50%.
    - If it starts at 30% off, it will eventually go to 50% and end at 70%.
    - If it strats at 50% off, it will eventually go to 70% and end at 90%.

Except for seasonal items*, the item will typically be marked down again only if the price ends in a 6 or 8 (i.e. Fire Helicoper for $17.48). *Seasonal items always follow 30/50/70 for food/candy, and 50/70/90 for the rest.

That price for the #60010 helicopter is actually decent, if it were online it wouldn't last long at that price. As it stands, they have it at $29.99 online, go figure...
  • BTHodgemanBTHodgeman Member Posts: 622
I agree. I picked up 3 of them. They'll make good gifts :)

Anyone else notice that Target calls this an "Only at Target" item? I don't usually pay much attention to the regular City line.

This year is working out prefect for me. I'm working nights tonight and get off at 4am. I just happen to drive past a couple of 24hr Walmarts on my way home. I will be sure to scan everything I see and post my findings.

    Just don't post pictures ;-)

was at walmart this morning. zip on clearance that didn't already exist. checked w/ a worker and they have no clue when the clearance will happen.

    GROAN!

Last year was 50% off and I'd been looking forward to this this 4 ages.
  • BTHodgemanBTHodgeman Member Posts: 622
The Walmart clearance strategy from the past two years was likely a reflection of excess inventory / lower sales, and not a "new normal," as many of us were hoping. As some of you may recall, prior to 2011, Walmart didn't really clearance entire categories like Target has always done.

The 30% off sale probably helped ease that excess inventory much earlier in the year.

Also remember that Walmart is making decisions as an entire company with 4500 stores. While your store may have a lot of inventory, the company as a whole could still be very lean.

  • Thanos75Thanos75 Member Posts: 1,120
The three WM's I checked today were all very well stocked. One of the WM's was so well stocked it even had Batcaves and LTR Trains sitting right next to all of the new sets. Both Targets I checked looked pretty bare.
  • dannyrwwdannyrww Member Posts: 1,394
I got 10 of the eagle polybags for 48 cents each at the Lego store...bought 10 at 98 cents on the 23rd so now I have an even 20 for a total of $15 not too bad.
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
I haven't checked Walmart yet, but I picked up some of the polybags 50% off at Target and found a couple newer Hobbit sets at 30% (79011, 79012). The fire copter was 50% off. This was in Fresno, CA.
  • DraxDrax Member Posts: 11
Same experience as everyone else here. Hit 4 Walmarts while I was out and about today, and only one had any items at 'clearance', and then, they only had 2 sets at reduced prices, the Naboo sub for $40 and the Darth Malgus ship for $54. Picked up three of the Malgus and passed on the sub. Might go back later this weekend and get a few more.
  • sonsofscevasonsofsceva Member Posts: 542
I got a ghost train for $11 and a few cheap chimas and that is all for today. Not much this holiday.

I was only able to find 1 #40034 at $2.49...couldn't even find the display where those and the Friends polys would be anymore....plenty of #30270. One of my Targets(smaller one) started clearance @30% off. Ninjago Ultra Sonic Raider $55.xx, Ninjago #9450 $83.xx, SW Geonosian #9491 $11.xx, Lord of the Rings Pirate Ambush #60008 $69.xx. The other larger Target was at 15% off. There was a Target employee working in the LEGO isle and I asked if she was reducing anymore and I told her I wished the #60008 were 50% off like the City Fire Copter. She scanned them and repriced them at $49.98 without a word. I quickly put all 3 in the cart!

Same story at my walmart. The manager said he thought the toy clearance would start in a couple weeks at 25% off but wasn't sure.
  • scotty12scotty12 Member Posts: 852
I was told at a WM (store manager-even with his picture at the entrance) said to check back in 3-4weeks when they start reshelving for Feb 1rst. He was told thru corporate that they'd moved enough inventory from the shelves that they didn't need to do after X-Mas clearances.
  • 12651265 Member Posts: 1,165
I went out mid-morning looking for sales even though many reported that there were not. I found nothing to brag about. I'm not disappointed, but happy to see that the stores didn't need to discount and glad to see that they didn't have to due to overstocking. Maybe in several days, or weeks, some sales will happen, but it won't be like in years past.

As far as the walmart I went to and VS other's I've seen, it's about an average size but trust me. The one I was at REALLY needed at least some minor clearance happening and a major lego aisle cleaning.

And I have a really important Q for ya'll. Does anyone know if walmart takes toy returns w/o a receipt? here's the problem:

Mom got some galaxy squad set(swarm interceptor I think) since she saw it was the only blue and white plane type set at the WM and thought that it was the set i had pointed out and didn't want to call me and double check since she "didn't want to ruin the surprise". REALLY?

I don't even know what to do w/ that set she got me if I can't return it. debating about taking in a few months and stuffing it in one of the boxes of stuff we donate to helping hands(kind of a local goodwill) or offloading it at the flea market(if we ever do that) unless the receipt shows up or I can return it w/o receipt since I have no use for the set.

  • samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,506
@ACWWGal2011- Walmart's returns is the most relaxed return system that I know of.... I'm pretty sure they are willing to take anything back. You should be fine without a receipt, just explain the situation.

Take in an old pair of socks, they'll probably take them too.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
^ Walmart will, with a few exceptions, take almost anything back at almost any time...

Of course, each store may be run slightly differently, but I've never had a problem with them on returns/exchanges.

In my experience and in talking with store managers, the general idea is that just a few categories of products are the problem children. Almost anything in the "exceptions list" like electronics, video games, air beds, etc. will be looked at closely.

Toys? No, that just isn't an area they have problems with and they do want to keep mom and dad happy as toy buyers, so unless you're abusing the system, return away.

Side note: LEGO stores will also take returns without a receipt, they also track returns and put restrictions on frequent returners without receipt, but once or twice is not an issue.

    From Walmart's web site:

    ---------------

Do you accept returns without a receipt?

Walmart, for several years, has accepted returns without a receipt, even though many of our competitors require receipts for all returns. Walmart gives customers the option of a cash refund (if the purchase was under $25), a shopping card for the amount of the purchase (if it was over $25) or an even exchange for the product. Also, as applicable, we follow any manufacturer’s warranties.

Do you track returns, or do you place a limit on the number of returns?

In the event that a customer has returned more than three items without receipts within a 45-day period, the cash register system will automatically flag the transaction, and a customer service manager or member of management must approve the return. These cash register messages will remain for six months and will disappear if there are no more returns during that time period.

perfect, thanks! GSSI looks like a cool set and I swear that the box is giving me sad "don't bring me back" Bambi eyes(it's almost working) but the problem is that I know from past buying experiences that the set just wont work out.

it'll get assembled(if I assemble it at all), get tossed in a drawer at some point, and then sit around for ages waiting to be unassembled or used.

On the other hand, TW, if it's anything like a lot of my really good lego buying choices like blue roadster, would get assembled and stay together for a while and might get parted out, might get modded, get displayed, or get stored for a short while then displayed.

It may have more basic parts but I see it being a lot more handy.

No lego stores where I live. "Local" store is a 5-6 hour drive, vacation time only thing. :(

^ One thing to be aware of is that you may not get full price for the return. If that sets was ever on sale, that is the amount you will get since you cannot prove that you paid a higher price for it.

I was going to double check that.
