    @jdylak I think for the most part they expect most kids to move on to other themes, each year there is a brand new group of 3-6yo kids getting Lego for the first time, and this group is large. From my experience it really is the Emergancy Service vehicles that are the most popular with boys in this age group. So to keep things fresh a redesing is done every couple of years, but of basically the same sets.

    I think its relatives and birthday parties that keep the emergency sets selling. " So what does Timmy want for birthday? He really likes LEGO. So the average customer walks into the LEGO isle and goes "Oh my...lets just get him the fire truck".

    ^ And of course it's much easier for that to happen when ~50% of current City sets are based on the emergency service du jour.

    My son who is 7 as spent the last 2 weeks just playing with emergency City sets. This is the most active he has been with his Lego for some time. The role play scenarios he comes up with are great. He doesn't have any coast guard sets to complete the line up so Santa is hopefully at the ready ;)

    There is always a place for these sets regardless of what us dads think!!!

    BINGO! We have to remember who these sets are meant for, and that is kids.
    We AFOL often take that fact for granted and think that LEGO owes us something...

    ^Lego obviously doesn't owe anyone anything (other than what's on the liabilities side of their balance sheet). But there's nothing wrong with providing feedback to a company so improvements can be made such that everyone benefits (company makes money, AFOL's and kids get cool sets).

    Of course you are correct. And feedback is great, but I bet that LEGO will continue this trend of CITY designs for years to come... and I don't mind (too much).

    I personally love many of the new CITY sets, even if they are rehashes of past sets. So far my favorites are the Logging Truck, Auto Transporter, Airport Fire Truck, and Camper Van.

    I am all for more variety in the City line, but truth be told, TLG can only make so many SKUs each year in City and stores like Walmart and Target want items that have broad appeal that will sell in large numbers.

    Maybe we need a City Expert line! :) A line of sets geared more towards teens and adults, but that still fit within City...

    They could be sold only online and be an upgrade option and a "grow into" option for kids.

    We have Creator Expert, why not City Expert?

    I think Creator Expert probably is City Expert. The PC, HE and WM all carried that branding and are all sets with minifigs that fit into a City layout.

    The don't fit into a city layout. My son has the Hospital. Put that on a road plate next to Grand Emporium. They don't gel. He is amazed at my Town layout. The rows of houses. The downtown. The airport, with runway (yes a RUNWAY), and so on. He would love to do this with his sets but can not. The City sets do not make a "city".

    I have argued this many times over. How do you tell a kid you can't have a city when they don't make "city" buildings/things like before? The answer I have been given many times is "buy a bucket and build them yourself". That's the answer?

    Yes, Lego is an "imagination" toy but some things are just nowhere near the same. An airport with no runway for the planes to land? Race cars that have no track? A harbor that is the same level as the water? May be he is just nitpicky?

    How well they fit would be a matter of opinion and in a layout as described I would agree they would look poor (your layout sounds great btw)

    Realistically though how many families are going to have the space, money or desire to produce something like that? Personally I'm a City fan and would love to see more detailed buildings. I'm sure if TLG thought they would sell in big volume they would produce them.

    Is this a boys want vehicles v girls want buildings? I don't own any Friends aside from the Dolphin Cruiser but the sets look very buildings heavy.

    My favourite City set in recent years is #3661 Bank & Money Transfer.

    Great building, cool vehicles and figs, nice playability, and the building itself fits in great with other recent city buildings.

    Collecting enough of these types of sets to make a great layout can be done, but it will take several years of waiting for these types of sets to be released, or some purchasing of retired sets. I'm hoping for more sets like this in 2014, but am not holding my breath.

    I just want LEGO to sell a Gas Station for the first time in about 5-6 years. (and I do not count the #7642 garage set as that appeared to be more for big rigs)
    Make it a gas station/repair shop and keep it around $60 please (preferably UNDER $60)

    ^The current #4207 City Garage has a two-pump gas station. Not really a stand-alone gas station, but at least there is somewhere to fuel up!

    Yes indeed! Sort of a smaller and more modern version of the one in #6562. There's also an even smaller self-service gas pump in #60016. I agree that it'd be great to get a full gas station with a service station and/or convenience store attached, though... been a while since we've had one of those, and I never had one at all in my own childhood Town/City collection.

    I'm guessing they do not sell that well, but I fail to see why. Lots of activities can occur at the Gas station (especially if you also add a garage to it -hint hint LEGO). Heck if they love police so much, have the station getting held up or something. But the city desperately needs a gas station (and no I do not count the one in the city Garage set)

    Had #6378 Shell Service Station as a child and my brothers and I thought it was great. Very nice set. Something along those lines today could be quite interesting.

    I wish there were more buildings coming for the City Sets.

    I have also been looking for a gas station. Had #6378 as a kid (still do), but need something that fits with our current City. Had #7642, but just sold it as it was too big for our City.

    I did use the Daily Bugle building from #76005 to add a building to our City.

    Just got the Race Car from WHS Birmingham, UK. Great design and a great mini figure, although a lot of stickers, and a great new part in it, a new type a mini slope. They had 6 Monster Trucks, and one of the Police prison transport, police bike, and the race car. So folks, their out in the wild...

    I have #6375, #6378, #6394, #6397, and #7993, and I am trying to BL a #6371 but it is not easy as I cannot find the little pump stickers.
    Love the gas stations (likely overcompensation for not having one growing up), but it has been some time since #7993 (since 08-09).

    Whoa. Never realized there was a precursor to #6378 but there was #6371 .
    #6378 was the first lego set I bought with my birthday money as a kid. Still have the Shell stickers spanning the tiles. :)

    They really need to give city a shake. Even a side project, like xtreme in the town theme.. That at least gave you bikes, race cars etc to blend in and use along side regular town/city stuff should you choose to.

    I'm curious if 60047: Police Station is the 'flagship' CITY set for 2014. 2013 had 60026: Town Square and 2012 had 4207: City Garage.

    It's neat (to me, anyway) 60047: Police Station and 60004: Fire Station share the same architecture.

    I find it interesting 2013 & 2014 brought about the return of the mini-helicopters found in sets from the mid-80's to mid-90's.

    Just got monster truck and race car both very nice sets. Lego store advised me that all 2014 sets go out on Boxing day ready for the 27th though the police station is on sale already. Next weeks purchases are the tow truck Huw just posted pics of and the car transporter.

    I think the police station is the flagship set for 2014 and probably is every year they release a new one (not including the forest one).

    Nice to see new trains coming. Frankly, I think the old ones stayed a year too long, my kids have been asking for another train and we haven't had one to buy for awhile now.

    423 parts for the new railway station also seems a bit light, but so be it.

    ^yeah I was hoping for more parts on the station too. With that many parts it sounds like it will be more of a platform than a station. Still, if they don't do the stairs and walkway over the track bit like last time that leaves more parts for the building.

    Couldn't agree more, new trains are long overdue and I'm thrilled TLG are showing trains some love this year.

    At 400+ pieces the new train station is the biggest so far piece count wise so I'm looking forward to that and I'll never complain about buildings being available in the city line.

    Actually I think the 'basic' trains being out for this long is about on par with what the last trains were out for.
    LEGO does not change up the train lines much, I think people have gotten a bit spoiled by the creator train turn over and the red cargo train that was not out for long.
    In any case I am hoping the new trains are a bit different than the existing trains they have done. The blue loco will be a welcome change if that is what the Cargo train has. Will be interesting to see what cars are going to be with it as well.
    As for the station I'm guessing it is fewer parts as they will not have the path over the the train like the last and it will e on one side only. The low part count will likely be because they will use more 1x2x5 and 1x4x5 panels in its construction along with the platform pieces as well. In any case nice to see the change and I'm sure most will welcome it.

    Asfor the flagship sets for City. If you count the TS and CG as the flagship sets, then Im guessing for 14 it will be another TRU exclusive, and I doubt the Police Station will be that.

    Hmm, so Arctic has graduated from glowing alien fossils to mysterious fossils. I want to be upset about the silliness of finding mysterious crystals in the Arctic, but I'm sure the real reasons people explore and research the Arctic would bore and confuse most City-aged kids, the same reason the mine sets would bore and confuse them if the miners were not digging for something visibly shiny and valuable.

    Also, yay huskies! Hope they're aesthetically consistent with other LEGO dogs. Always love getting new breeds!

    Sounds like the train station is going to be a bigger sort of station than we got in 2010, which is nice for variety's sake. I've got no problem with 2010's station but it's been a while since we had a nice big railway terminal.

    2010 gave us some really great train sets, what with a nice sleek passenger train design without an overspecialized front end and a cool station with overhead walkway. I got the 2010 passenger train set... sadly I don't have a place to put it, so although I've built it it's in its box right now! Space constraints are one of the things that has always stopped me from getting into LEGO trains on a bigger scale.

    The other train set descriptions don't tell us much that we couldn't guess from the titles, but I still look forward to pics. I'm not much of a collector of LEGO trains, but I love rail transit in real life so I'm still a big fan of LEGO trains, especially passenger trains like the ones I'm familiar with.

    The Cargo train set sounds interesting, describing what I presume are maybe Cattle cars? In any case that plus a 'cargo train station' is intriguing to say the least

    ^ I am similarly interested in the cargo station should go well with the old crane. The railway station doesn't sound to bad either with steps up to the entrance and some other features not least the return of the taxi. Sounds like the passenger train with the "power around the curved tracks at top speed" comment will be like the last one and have a small circle track. Lets hope flexi track takes a running jump this year though its fine in very small amounts. I am hoping for the return of the curved and straight track sets or the really old sets where you had just straight or just curved.

    I'm not sure how to feel about the Creator series getting into commercial type buildings with the Bike Shop and Cafe. It just makes it seem like Creator is turning into City 2.0. It does sound like a cool set, though. I just hope we don't end up with a Creator police station next year.

    Great, the Bike Shops have now infiltrated Creator. Surprised that instead of a Café, we didn't get a pizza shop.

    I'm actually looking forward to the Bike Shop Creator Set... at least until I can see pictures of it. I'm hoping it will be a full blown building with four walls and a roof... and if the other two builds in the set can be built as full buildings I might even get three boxes so I can populate my town with more buildings. However if any of the builds are just front facade buildings, I won't be as excited. Keeping my fingers crossed with this one.

    If ~750 pieces can make a relatively substantial house (#31012), hopefully ~1000 pieces can make a relatively substantial shop.

    Bah. I was hoping for better for Arctic, but should have known better. Basically the only set that might interest my son will be the large base camp.
