My guess is that people have written sniping bots for the lightning deal since there is no commitment to buy, so you have hundreds of auto-clicks happening at the instant it opens. Then the bot owner has plenty of time to see if they really want it. That's why people hundreds deep into the waitlist still get one. The waitlist is the human shoppers. I'm surprised Amazon doesn't add a captcha to squash the bot activity.

That might be true... it would be even nicer if there was more than a few hundred of something for sale at that price.

Worse, a lot of the lightning deals were clearly setup before the price match to Walmart, some of them are the same 30% off they already were.

I know that I'm trolling but I didn't see a single Lego set on Amazon today that was significantly cheaper than it has been in the past month. If anything you missed out on some of the best deals like the X-Wing for $38 and the Millennium Falcon for $105 by waiting too long. Those are not even in stock currently on Amazon. I don't consider a Clone Wars set that no one has ever heard of for 30% being a good deal. But each to their own. I think many people get caught up in the feeding frenzy to even realize it.

I checked Amazon on and off today and I pretty much found the same thing. My take on it was that a lot of it had to do with timing. I think they ran 30% off on a lot of sets to price match Walmart, but not sure if the prices lasted all day long. As is typical for Amazon prices changed a lot as I was checking. Some Creator houses were at a good price, but didn't last long enough for me to take advantage. I did hit it right on a couple of cargo trains. I got them for $125, a great price for a set with a RRP of $180. The LEGO lightning deals were impossible to snag.

Helm's Deep 100% out instantaneously AND waitlist filled in 10 seconds. Okay.

I picked up the last Helm's Deep I needed at $92 (and even that's been available cheaper at various points), but I'm inclined to agree. In general, I think Black Friday deals are getting worse and worse, but the mystique of Black Friday is often enough to drive purchases.

Got on the waiting list for HD. Now what, bribe the doorman to let me in? Stare in futile expectation for 2+ hours?

Black Friday is pretty much for suckers.

Waitlist position no.1 for LOTR Wizard Battle lol :)

Told me I was number one as well for same set. Took about a half an hour to go through. The few dollars was definitely not worth the time waiting around for it to open up.

  • DougoutDougout Member Posts: 888
Suckers have turned Black Friday into what it is today. Retailers cashed in because they knew people would run around for the thrill of the hunt and that is what happened. However, I also know things are very bad this season, there aren't enough jobs in the US to pay people to go and buy merchandise, so this is pretty much what I expected.

Places like Amazon and Target have poised themselves nicely as they watch other retailers struggle selling their junky shelf warmers. The ingenious part of Amazon is they probably didn't even need to do 30% off to move sales, they only did it to steal Walmart customers. They could have easily gotten away with mass sales from all the work other retailers put into sensationalizing Black Friday, plus their gimmicky 'lightning deals'. I mean the name pretty much tells you that you are not going to get in on the deal, but it just sounds so cool and interesting. Better stick around, refresh, and keep shopping for a couple hours. Amazon, you sly devils you.

During the countdown for HD, I started clicking where I thought the add to cart button would show up with one or two seconds left. That landed me on the waitlist and then I actually was able to order about 5 minutes later! Definitely seems rigged or they only had a few hundred...
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654

I never even got off the waitlist. I guess Amazon lied and I was really No.2 :)
Agreed on the time thing...sheesh! I swear people are writing scripts or something to claim these lightning deals so fast.

I doubt it is rigged. If just 100 people in each state tries for an offer, that is 5k people all clicking at once. Even if they have 5k items, they sell out instantly. I think 5000 people going after a prime Holiday item like Lego is crazy conservative. It is no wonder they are gone instantaneously.

Eh. I think it is about using it to one's advantage.

I do agree. Some of the "deals" I saw on Amazon today were not deals.
I did, though, pick up some real deals today while out, and other deals on previous weeks when I felt we hit lows. The Key is knowing prices well in advance, so you'd an spot an actual deal when you see it.

Yes...I don't do the Facebook stuff, but I'm not as concerned just using Twitter to snag deals.

^^I don't use twitter except to take advantage of the occasional deal (such as this). So it's of zero consequence to me if Amex sees me four tweets!

I was hoping to snag a Horizon Express from Amazon, but it looks like they haven't carried it for a while, unfortunately,
  • nkx1nkx1 Member Posts: 719
^I forgot to add that if you don't want to use twitter, you can just log in to your Amex account and click on the Offers for You (or something like that) tab and add the deal to your card. That's how I did it. It's good 'till 12/31.

I just messaged them for the adjustment since I had bought it on BF when it hit 30% off. It was a hard purchase bc I really didn't want it that much. I purchased it only to complete the 2nd wave of LotR. Getting it at 40% off will help me sleep a little better. $60 bucks for a large ship is a steal.

The Gund bear (http://www.amazon.com/Gund-2013-Amazon-Collectible-Plush/dp/B00CBPX98W/) is free with your $75 order of toys. You have to manually put it in your cart though. If nothing else, these can always be donated to Toys for Tots or other local charities.

Oh and by the way, Constitution Train is $61.19 !!!

You got that right. Sometimes LEGOS are like plastic crack! :-)

I need to get myself a hobby to keep me busy so that I don't have time for LEGOS. Errrr.... wait... LEGOS is my hobby! Eeeeekkkkkk!!!!!

Just when I think I was done, Amazon drags me back in. I was going to get Colby City when it hit 50% after Christmas, but this the same thing if you factor in no sales tax. Also got the Temple of Light for the nice parts and bit the bullet on the Rancor Pit.

Jabba's Palace went back down to $70 apparently. There was 1 left in stock and I didn't hit checkout fast enough. I'll be watching the rest of the day hoping for a discount.
