What is up with TRU. Sales being sales and not just marking stuff down to msrp. Am I dreaming.

Not bad, I saw the small castle set there today for $10 too.

Thanks for the heads-up. I purchased two for in-store pickup. I'm assuming they'll let me adjust the price.

No, you're not dreaming, but I suspect that LEGO sales across the board are down from last year, or at least haven't risen as much as forecast.

I'm seeing sales about 30% below last year, and that is with a larger inventory than I had last year.

Overall the retail environment this year is expected to be bad:

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-bad-christmas-20131101,0,673709.story

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisversace/2013/09/26/2013-a-not-so-merry-christmas-for-the-consumer-and-retailers/

Walmart has cut orders to reduce overall inventory and isn't hiring as many workers as it had planned.

TLG has increased LEGO production, it is quite possible that TRU is cutting prices to move more product, otherwise they might be stuck with a lot after Christmas.

Picked up 2 along with the Grand Prix truck. Got the $10 gift card and went back, used the $10 gift card, and got 2 more. So 4x tanker truck and 1 x Grand Prix Transporter for $63 total. Not bad.

(Disclaimer: and for those who would potentially be upset that I dared to circumvent the 2 per customer minimum, I left 25 copies on the shelf and the manager of the store, who knows me well, stated that as soon as I leave the store and come back in, I am a new customer.....)

Thanks for posting. My son will have another truck to add to his fleet come Christmas morning.

As a sidenote: I couldn't help but notice the "hot deal" tag for #9495 Gold Leader's Y-Wing: "$50 - A Savings of Over 35%!". Gotta love false advertising.

I got my two copies of #60016. I ordered in-store pickup, but didn't feet like running around the store looking for an elusive pick-up kiosk and waiting around to get a price adjustment, so I just picked a couple off the shelf. I'll have to call and cancel my pickup order so I don't deprive anyone of the deal.

On a side note, TRU is has the absolute worst customer service I've come across in a while outside of government offices (no offense to government employees that are hard-working). The employees I encountered were generally clueless and quite slow at doing anything. Ordering online is so much nicer than having to deal with shenanigans at the store.

Yes, I've seen transactions, both purchases and returns, take up to 20 minutes. The complexity of their sales, exclusions, price matching policies, customers handing over their cell phones to price match... Ugh... it's horrible, and it's only early November. The customer wants a good deal and the poor employee wants to stay out of trouble. An almost-adversarial situation is created. No wonder online sales continue to surge.

Well...they're also going thru all the seasonal new employees. Good luck getting any help....and by 'help', I mean assistance with any sort of accuracy at all.

They were already sold out at my local TRU this afternoon.

Ditto at the 2 near me.

I stopped by with the kids at noon and grabbed one and 2 women next to me grabbed the last 3. They went fast!

My ToysRUs was sold out as well. As I was going to Target anyways, I tried to get them to price match. They wouldn't, as it wasn't in a "regular weekly ad." Wally World, however, did it no problem. Got my 2. They still seemed to have a full stock.

I checked one TRU yesterday and they were sold out. Might try one more, but I'm not holding my breath.

^^^....and when she was distracted and her hands were full with the set I just handed her, I climbed onto her shoulders to reach five that were even higher up, hidden away in a secret spot that I stashed away in earlier in the week. Confused and dazed she looked at the set in her hands only to realize it was a #7591 Construct a Zerg.

On a more serious note, I was able to price match at Walmart with no problem. I have found the late night workers at Walmart are much more accommodating in regards to price matching. There is not the high stress level crowds of the day, which mellows them out a bit.
  • chuckpchuckp Member Posts: 684
@Trenth What did you have to show Walmart to get price match? Did you need an actual copy of a store flyer? Our TRU is out of stock, so I thought I would try a Walmart price match too. Thanks.
  • TrenthTrenth Member Posts: 162
Hey what's were I lucked out. I could not find a TRU ad online, so I used this http://slickdeals.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2295690&d=1383877528
on my phone and the cashier had no problem.
  • chuckpchuckp Member Posts: 684
^ Thanks. I'll try with my phone and see if my WM will accept it. I'm pretty sure our Walmart has the pickiest mgr. in the entire chain.

chuckp -- My cashier at WM originally tried to deny me, as I didn't have a printed ad. I pulled up their price match policy. It specifically says that the customer does not have to have a copy of the ad. The supervisor did it no problem.

^ Thanks BuilderMom, I will remember that next time they try to deny me a price match. I just got back and they matched the Tanker with no problems. The last time I tried required multiple trips as they insisted on having a printed copy of the sales flyer.

trekked over to a TRU a neighborhood away as i wanted to hit the Kmart next door. walked in saw a lego display with a bunch of #60018 over the sale tag for #60016. Noticed one fig pic on the top of the boxes wasn't the same & voila 2 tanker trucks. put them in my cart and checked the lego aisle they had a full row of them and 2 more cases on the top of the shelf... Went to the TRU a few blocks from me on my way home and they didn't have any so it's a good thing I took the ride over there. Built one in about 15 mins, nice little truck, will part out. Trying to convince the LUG to draft it if enough of us can get our hands on them, i think i may go try to grab a couple more tomorrow if i can get over there again

Went to my local TRU this Monday, and got two Tankers. The shelf had about 20 of this set left, then I realized that they did not had the usual sticker with the promo in front of this product. All other items on sale this week had a sale label, but this one. Even the Monster Fighter items, all on sale, including the Vampire Castle for $75. That explained why they had so many of the Tanker left. I am going back tomorrow to pick a couple more for $10 each.

I picked up three in two trips with other sets. Grabbed 42006 on sale with the 10$ GC as well. Hoping to make these into rail cars in my new train setup. I swear every customer in the store had grabbed the limit of two in the first hour of them being open. the 20-30 they had went FAST! I was honestly surprised they had more than 3 or 4. First decent price at TRU in over 2 years since the old B2G1 free. A sign of things to come perhaps?

I think that with the rumors of a slow Xmas season is pushing all retailers to do deals like these. It may also be that LEGO is pushing certain items through certain retailers, because there were too many of the City Tanker at my local TRU, and I visit this store constantly, at least once a week, and I am sure they stocked up for this particular promo, so yes, we may see some other deals like that, specially at TRU.

I thought this sale went through the 13th so I made a special trip to my TRU that doesn't sell out of anything and sure enough, they had a ton of them. But the sale ended on Sunday! 11/11. So I sweet talked them into selling it to me for $10.
I didn't even really want this set but once once I made the trip I didn't want to walk away empty handed!
  • nkx1nkx1 Member Posts: 719
^You made a special trip for a set you didn't even want?
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
    ^ lol, seriously
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
Yes, that's right. It wasn't a set that I had on my radar, (much like just about everyone else who ran out and bought it this weekend) But it was only $10 and I checked the reviews on S@H and people really liked the set so I figured why not go get it.

Avg. maturity of 34-48 year old man = 12-14 year old adolescent. True fact (says the 38 year old man)

Sorry, I didn't intend to be a bully. I was honestly just wondering :) Anyway, similar to what wrangler6915 said, you can't expect much maturity from a 35yo guy who plays with Lego lol.

Well, having the wrong date in the title probably didn't help. Can a mod please fix the date to show it ended on the 11th?

It's a beautiful thing when a sale will get you to buy something you never wanted, right?

I got tripped up by info in the title of the thread too - went to TRU yesterday trying to get the deal, even pulled up the flyer on my phone to show the cashier. Needless to say I was a tad embarrassed when I saw the ad clearly showing the sale ending on 11/11 and not 11/13 :)

I was building the set last night when my son saw it and went nuts, he loved it. He ran off and found a small set to build for himself. This is a kid that does not enjoy building Lego sets. Possibly the best $10 ever spent.
