7754 Home One Mon Calamari Star Cruiser, Why isn't this discontinued set more valuable?

I never bought this set, but I am wondering what went wrong with this set? With a retail price of $109.99, currently it can be found for under $80 which is unusual for a set that is highly collectible. Too many people bought this thinking that? Demand is low, no one wants it? $109.99 was too high of a price when lego set that price? What gives? Any other lego sets that you can think of where it was worth less after it was discontinued?

I have often asked myself the same thing, I picked up 4 of these, 1 to build and the other 3 to sell to support my Lego habit (I can quit anytime, I swear!).

That being said, perhaps it is just to much to pay for an A-Wing and a semi decent play set that just didn't do it for most people.

Perhaps you're right, lots of people did what I did, give it time, it might move a bit...

BTW, there are other sets that didn't go up either, 10186 General Grevious being a good example. UCS vader tie fighter is another good example, and that one is pretty cool, but still cheap to buy

It was listed for 50% off at Lego.com for a while (last Christmas eve I believe). Unlike the other Starwars sets listed half off at the same time that one was around for a full day or two. So between the lower demand (given the set type) and the fact that many had a fair chance of buying it around the sale many don't value the set highly... at least not yet. It's not that old!

At a guess, it's because (1) it's not that great, and (2) lots of people bought duplicates to make a quick killing.....

Tell me about it, Im currently offloading my whole Star Wars collection to focus on other, more budget friendly themes, and some sets I've more than doubled my money on, while others, including this one are just sitting there. I'll be losing money on it Im sure. I was very surprised to see a while back on Trade Me a Black Monarchs Castle from 1988-89 complete and in great condition sold for just $80NZ. It retailed here at well over twice that price! And it's a fantastic set.

So many retired sets sell on the second-hand market for around their original retail price. The few "hot" retired sets give us the vision that anything retired is worth a fortune. For this set, i think it just never sold very well, and was discounted HEAVILY for months and months. I know this happened with other sets in the past that have since risen in value. But this one just isn't iconic.

I do think that as the years go by, it will raise in value since it has so many unique minifigs. But as others have pointed out - we all bought multiples. For one, they were so "cheap." I still have four left on my shelf, after having already sold off fifth (keeping the minifigs.)

It's a neat set. And you hear this often: Cloud City wasn't a hot seller, they kept discounting UCS Millennium Falcons, Market Street sat on shelves, etc. Is everything gold? Nope. Buy the sets you like. If you have the money, buy multiples.

LEGO is in the blood. :)

Also, Amazon sellers are still selling it for 80 USD in the US

I also think that it was bought by many because of multiple sales to make it cheaper (as it should have never been 110 to begin with) and the fact that is was only desirable for Ackbar, which became moot when he should up as a magnet

The unglued magnet set with Admiral Akbar really killed this set. Thank goodness those days are over.

Im with @Brickupdate, I think you will see this more because a few sets go for more than what they are worth people will buy these looking to sell on at a heavy profit because it says limited edition fan choice and assumed because 1) it said that and 2) a few sets go for more so people will buy them trying to make money but as they flood the market it forces prices down. Give it 5 or 6 years it will be higher
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
In 5 or 6 years the set will look out of date.

I look at the Star Wars sets released more than 5 years ago and most of them are very uninspired. The difference between the first 5 years of Star Wars Lego and the last 5 years of Star Wars Lego are very noticeable.

If I had an unlimited budget, there is actually very little from before 2006 that I'd buy, the UCS sets being the prime exception.
  • brickupdatebrickupdate Member Posts: 1,020
I agree with @LegoFanTexas. I had a chance to buy a huge selection of complete Star Wars sets from the early-to-mid 2000s. But they were so much more basic in terms of what is being produced now. To the same point: the UCS sets from that era are really nice, I recently got a couple of them, I was really impressed.

Wish I could afford the UCS X-Wing, that is a nice ship, but for the asking price, ouch...

6212 just isn't the same, but if they ever reissue a UCS X-Wing, they'll do a lot of damage to the collector community. Something isn't special if it keeps getting remade, plus there are plenty of new things to do. UCS AT-AT, Federation Battleship, Luke's Landspeeder, Mon Calamari Cruiser, etc.

Well the License is probably not cheap, so, combine with rising petroleum costs, LEGO is probably cutting back on designs... especially for large sets.. I think the Sandcrawler, (maybe Jabba's Sail Barge, AT TE and Republic Gunships too) probably is the last to scale set (closest to scale anyways) that was under 200 that will be seen for quite sometimes....

I dunno-- since 2001, we've seen 2 "direct to consumer Star Wars" sets come out every year except 2003 (just 1 that year) and 2011 (so far just 1).

I DO think that LEGO's running out of good ideas for system-scale sets for AFOLs, though. The gimmick now seems to be including new, rare, figures with each set, since LEGO has finally figured out that the minifigures are seemingly a HUGE chunk of what sells any given set.

UCS sets still have a lot of room-- we still don't have a UCS landspeeder, Speeder Bike, Skiff, Cloud Car, TIE Bomber, AT-AT, standard TIE fighter, A-Wing, B-Wing, and probably a dozen more that we could come up with. Easily another dozen or so UCS models they could do. But I'm not so sure about minifig-scale ones, since they've covered so much ground with their standard (non-AFOL) lineup.

^well we are getting a B wing at the start of next year. I dont think you will see to many super expensive sets really for a few years (but i could be wrong)

@LegoFanTexas but some of them still fetch a fair price even if they look dated. Its about the exclusivness with the set and i dont think, unless they do a Mon Cal ship, we will see any of the figures again in the set and that will push the price up. Just look at Cloud City thats pretty poor but its going for at least £300 boxed because of what it is and i think they will do the same to this set not realise another one and then cost goes up when the ones who bought for a quick buck have sold theirs on as its hit £100-£150.

Is that what the next UCS will be, a B-Wing? If so, well, ok I guess... The B-Wing was shown for about 10 seconds in the movies and is featured in games and books in a very limited fashion.

Why not an UCS A-Wing? I think the A-Wing is more well known. An UCS Mon Cal would be amazing as well.

If Lego is "running out of ideas", they need to come here and ask us, I'm sure we could come up with plenty of ideas, and we'd do it for free. :)
  • war44lockwar44lock Member Posts: 75
I like the idea of a B-Wing UCS. It's an interesting design for a fighter with a unique look to it. If the B-Wing featured for all of ten seconds then the A-Wing was there for maybe eleven seconds : )

I think there are plenty of potential UCS designs they could do. Slave 1 in true minifig scale would be awesome. Also any large ship like the Nebulon B, Calamari cruiser or rebel transport.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,793
I do not think it is out of ideas... it is cost... The last few sets have been lacking.. and while they have some nice ships, they are not minifig 'scale'.... (discounting the Shuttle and Falcon UCS as they are super expensive)
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
The Shuttle is expensive? 2,500 parts for $250? That strikes me as in line with what Star Wars sets cost.

Even the Falcon, at $499, was in line at over 5,000 parts.

Then again, perhaps my definition of "expensive" is not the same as yours. :)

What is the last UCS set they made that was low cost? General Grievous? That didn't sell well as far as I know (but I liked it, shame because I'd like more sets like that one).
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
The A-Wing was key in bringing down the SSD in ROTJ, it crashed into the bridge knocking out the controls to the engines keeping it in space above the Death Star II.

Ok, you're right that it was on screen for about as long as the B-Wing, but at least it actually did something, I don't recall the B-Wings being shown after the ships arrived at Endor.

Regardless, if you're going to do a UCS, why not the Nebulon B or Mon Calamari Cruiser? Those actually were shown in detail. Or how about a UCS R2-D2 or UCS Destroyer Droid, I know my kids would LOVE those!
  • war44lockwar44lock Member Posts: 75
Fair enough the A-wing did die doing a good job yes. I love the B-Wing mostly due to it being my favourite ship to fly in the old PC game X-Wing, it was tough and real well armed and the best ship for taking on frigates and corvettes. I think at some point LEGO should get around to making UCS versions of all the above suggestions, all are worthy and that would keep us all happy.
  • princedravenprincedraven Member Posts: 3,764
^^ hopefully you won't have to wait too long for a UCS R2-D2.
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,117
^ is that because lego have anounced R2 D2 will also be out next year in UCS?
  • Lego_Lord_MayorcaLego_Lord_Mayorca Member Posts: 619
Well, I recall getting my Home One for Christmas 2 years ago and I was absolutely stoked. I thought the union of a "base" with a ship, plus the first Mon Mothma and Ackbar figures, was a instant win in the annals of Star Wars Lego. I still stick to that, in spite of market performance. It will always be valuable to me, so the only sentiment I can offer is to echo that of others: this set will go up in value for you resellers and/or horders, but just don't it expect it to happen appreciably until later in the decade. And even then, it will still be worth comparatively less than other sets released at around the same time.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Don't get me wrong, I like Home One, but I also liked 10186 - General Grievous and that hasn't budged in price one bit, so what is expensive and what I like don't always match. :)
