There will be 17 new sets and 16 Collectible Minifigures that will be coming out with the movie.

    Looks very cool, but I can't help but wish that LEGO Universe would have gotten this same type of product tie-in...

    17 sets? Wow.

    It should be noted that while the linked article says the 17 sets will be on display at Comic Con, the actual press release says the first of the 17 sets will be on display.

    Well, it was inevitable there would be sets related to the film, but I never guessed so many. And a CMF line too! Fingers crossed for Green Lantern, the blue-haired mermaid, classic space dude, Abe Lincoln and the panda, all of which were in the trailer.

    This is really cool and really impressive. It didn't even dawn on me to think that TLG would market this way and furthermore, release such a huge line/theme to tie in. I think it will do quite well, I wonder what the name of the theme could be?

    Lets hope they tie these sets into the movie a little better than the Ironman 3 sets did.

    How about an aged, slightly used looking space minifigure for the collectible minifigure line like throne in the trailer?

    If any of the other 16 sets are as good as that first one looks, then my wallet's seriously getting stung. In a good way. Then a bad way. Will have to see what new sets 2014 brings us first I guess!

    I hear you. Universe was a total b@lls up; a multi-million pound advert created to sell... no products. :oS

    This amount of merchandise might partly be the result of lessons learned from that debacle. I mean, what company these days does NOT understand the use of mutually supportive product lines to cross pollinate? It should have been a no-brainer to make real-world universe-related sets/factions, while universe itself promotes existing lines in-game.

    Though, truthishly (lol), I'm not sure TLG ever learn anything (the impression I get at least, is they stumble into success and never really know why it happened). With it being their own brand license, maybe they're just going to smash it with everything they've got for maximum exposure, maximum high-street presence.

    I hope it goes well, I'm certainly looking forward to the minifig line, and that set looks crazy-cool.

    Compared with the Batman-DC Super Heros Unite, where I was disappointed to see bricks and pieces with bare studs, The LEGO Movie trailer seems to indicate that the studs in the movie will be fully emblazoned with "LEGO".

    Lego friends isn't a true success. Success would mean friends is loved as sets as well as the part packs when truthfully the reason it's popular with most people is as part packs for new colors, animals, and female hair

    ^ For many AFOLs perhaps, but for the target audience of girls, I think it is a hit as is for the sets (although my daughter only cares about the animals; she wants the Tower of Orthanc just for the eagle).

    I, for one, don't really find the models in that picture interesting at all. I suspect a lot of the sets will be an eclectic assortment of mish-mash arrangement sets. Nothing from the trailer that could constitute a set looked interesting but who knows what else the film will contain. The collectible figures might produce some good ones but are just as likely to produce duds as any other line.

    *Settles back to watch people complain about the models like they did with the Back to the Future set*

    They remade the blue classic space guy for the minifig display case so I could easily see them making one for one of these sets.

    TRU also put out several classic spaceman last Bricktober in the vintage minigure sets. So they do still have the molds. However, they used an updated helmet mold which was less prone to cracking.

    Out of the 17 sets, it seems like they want to hit on all the classic marks. Old fans are gonna get some Western, Space, etc sets they've been clamouring about.

    Wonder if this is a passive way for them to dip their toes back into classic themes to see if there is renewed interest, new interest, and complete yawn fest...

    It's turning into a great marketing campaign (in my eyes) already.

    I'd disagree there. I think TLG does learn things, and they apply those lessons in their new themes, and many of their successes have been by design rather than by chance. They don't have a perfect track record, obviously, because it's impossible to perfectly predict what will sell and what will not no matter how many years of experience you have. But when you look at Ninjago, or Friends, or BIONICLE, years of market research, planning, design, and focus testing went into creating themes with a massive scale and grand ambitions. The LEGO Group wouldn't have made any of these so extensive right out of the gate if they hadn't put any really careful consideration into whether they could truly prove successful. These themes all exceeded expectations, but the size of each theme should immediately make it obvious that those were very high expectations to begin with.

    That's not true at all. The majority of people buying LEGO Friends sets are kids, and I guarantee most of them are buying them based on the set, as with any other theme. More experienced builders may buy the sets for the parts, again, as with any other theme. Thinking AFOLs could ever keep a theme of that size afloat is pure ignorance.

    Anyway, this set looks nice. Look forward to seeing what else the theme has to offer.

    If your going to try and bash something you should try saying things you can intelligently back up. The Friends line is a commercial success. And you think that little girls, more than likely the majority of these sets are being bought for, want these just for the parts and not to play with?

    Brickfanatics, via a Dutch toy company, has published a list of set names and prices (in euro) for the Lego movie sets. The names below are translated from the Dutch, I assume, hence the ?.

    I think those all sound really amazing. I hope the last 7 sets incorporate older themes. Those initial sets all sound very film specific, except the Castle one. I would like more like that one.

    @ACWWGal2011 I was in the lego store near me this evening... they made 5 sales i noted while i was there, 3 were friends items. Friends is a huge success. One girl came in with her mom to get Summer Riding Camp. Another family came in with a baby and a small daughter who got one of the collectible animal sets, and i bought those too. Another woman bought one of the 10 buck friends sets. Other purchases were a BTTF set and a build a mini box. Everytime I'm in the store I see them restocking the friends section. 3/5 purchases i witnessed or actually 4/6 including mine involved Friends. Why do you think that popularity of a set or theme for parts among builders & AFOLs means a theme doesn't do well traditionally or overall?

    oh, now for the reason i came to this thread... went to the movies yesterday... big new The LEGO Movie cutout was there.... and I think we finally have a good look at Lord Business!

    I can second that. While for many AFOLS they may just be parts packs, for kids they are bought as complete sets. The minidolls sell quite well too on the secondary market, suggesting they are wanted by someone.
