Aesthetically displeasing sets...

I've just got to say that some things just don't look right in lego...I know I might get criticised for saying this but Pudsey 30029 is about the most aesthetically displeasing set I've seen! And the minimodulars 10230 just looks wrong....

I don't have a problem with Pudsey or the mini Modulars.

I would however like to nominate Set 7151, the original Sith Infitrator, as surely one of the most aesthetically offensive sets of all time. Makes me shudder just to think about it...

Any AT-ST official release by lego, most have little resembalance to the actual thing and never have two figures driving. @richo agree lego sw has improved but the chicken walker has not. 7879 hoth echo base this year looked awful aswell and let's not even mention it's move accuracy or lack of

^ Not sure I agree - nothing much badly wrong with the UCS version IMHO...

I'd probably have to nominate the first Hagrid's Hut set. That paper roof, and the unfolding 'feature' urghh...
  • bellybutton290bellybutton290 Member Posts: 453
^^ my bad, forgot about that one ha ha! I'll amend my original statement to say that the non ucs versions don't look the best. Something I hope to be sorted in the next release.

I agree with pudsey, just seems ugly and for no reason, surely there's good, simple bear designs out there.

I refused to buy most of the 1st generation of (along with some of the 2nd generation) Star Wars sets on aesthetic grounds alone.

While we fling rotten tomatoes; I've always thought that these 3 Harry Potter sets deserve some sort of warning that they could possibly cause permenant retina damage.

^ I think the designers must have been on holiday when the deadline happened, so they just got the work experience kid to fling something together.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
the early SW and HP stuff - just 9-12 years old, really shows you how far LEGO has advanced in just the last decade.
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
@Zathras: I agree about the design of those sets, but they are great for parts. That's also a reason to exist :)

    Lets not forget Exploriens.

I agree that the LEGO designers must have been on Holiday when those 3 HP sets were being developed... so they gave the task to the (color blind) Belville design team...

Ha! Great topic. I'd have to agree with @drdavewatford about the Infiltrator! What an eyesore! Luckily I've only just gotten into Star Wars late last year so missed all those abominations!
A theme I'm more familiar with is Pirates, and there were some pretty ugly designs in the older sets!

Nice topic. Technic's not known for it's great beauty but some of the early ones were lovely - the 851 tractor and 857 motorcycle spring to mind. As for eyesores, there's been a few.... the ill proportioned, badly coloured 8865 Test Car takes that cake.

^ Apologies in advance for the blatant self-promotion, but if Set 851's your thing then I have just the link for you....

Getting back on topic to the less beautiful sets, I got Set 170 Push-along Play Train in a mixed lot a while back and have been scratching my head about it ever since....

There have been some pretty horrendous sets over the years, but the nice ones more than make up for them I suppose, its not like you have to buy them is it.......!
I agree with Stuboy, some of the pirates sets were pretty bad after '95, 6244 Armada sentry for instance, what's with the Green doors?!
I think the early Star Wars and Harry Potter eyesores are forgiveable as the designers were working on something new, but something like Pirates which they got right for years and had some excellent classic sets going down the pan was unforgivable - what went wrong? did all the designers suddenly think, 'hang on, i've had enough of pirates now lets ruin it for a laugh'!
Argh, it makes me so mad!!! and don't get me started on the early 2000's Castle themes!

Thanks for that - I agree with everything you said - this is still the best Technic tractor after all these years...

If anyone fancies the 851 - I have one (with out instructions sadly and including some 'loved/unloved' bricks) to sell. Happy to let it go cheaply to a good home if you're willing to replace some of the worn parts, and trust that the inventory is 99% complete, but I'm not sure I can face checking it again.
I built it, but like DrDave struggled with the mechanism at the back. The parts are all original, but some of the slightly worn I could replace with newer ones, as long as I have them around, but I'm not going to carefully go over each bit. If anyone is interested, they can have it for 20 quid with the above caveats. I've got it listed on bricklink for £25 and it's about 20 quid cheaper than any other on there (last time I looked)

(all the gears are good, it's just a few plates and common bricks that are nibbled)

How about Squidman's Pitstop (5980), Count Dooku's Solar Sailer (7752), the new Harbor (4645), the police dog unit (7285), Police Pontoon Plane (7723), or the Troll Battle Wheel (7041)?

    Blech. :o)

    Mr Yellowcastle,

I've seen the backstock of sets you have. You probably have ten of each.

  • MatthewMatthew Administrator Posts: 3,714
^ haha! I don't think there's too much wrong with 4645... It does look like duplo, but it also gives off a lovely classic vibe with the yellow/blue *hides from stream of angry comments*

^^ I will admit to owning 1 battle wheel, but I bought that under duress. :o)

I recently purchased and disliked the Sith Nightspeeder. It's colours are unattractive and it has an awkward silhouette. It's not as if I grew up with X-Wings and Tie Fighters, but it's still a weird looking ship to get used to. But I'm going to give it another chance, I guess... after all, Savage is an awesome minifigure.

There go my retinas. Imagine some poor kid thinking he's getting the NEW Diagon Alley off of eBay for 30 bucks...

@purple_haze Yeah those green doors are just wrong! Luckily I missed all those early 2000s castle sets too, and as @Yellowcastle says the Troll Battle Wheel is just ridiculous! It looks like something out of the latest medieval blockbuster action flick.

@Savage_Steel I'm still waiting for my StuBoy minifig to be released!

Speaking of not appealing sets, this one is a bit awkward looking, at least in the pictures on the box.

  • MinifigsMeMinifigsMe Member Posts: 2,844
Nah, it really is too ugly. But I do have my little Dr Savage Steel and lego lab on my lab bench at work :)

I like the minifigure, but how they pronounce his name on the show should be a criminal offence. "Savaaauuuge O-Press".

Market Street. On its own, it's okay; lined up with the other modulars, the discordance is jarring.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
^ which is one of several reasons why I don't consider it part of the "official" Modular lineup myself. although with the new mini-modular set, it appears LEGO is going to make my position harder to defend.
  • streekerstreeker Member Posts: 299
I'm with you. I think Market Street kind of fell into the "official" Modular line-up by (un)happy accident. I don't think LEGO anticipated the success of the Modulars-let alone the first one-to launch the series with a definitive line-up in mind. I remember reading that James Beard said Cafe Corner was a test drive to see if a set at that high price point geared towards an older age group could sell well. Market Street was lucky in two respects: it was released shortly after CC, and it has three levels. At this point, LEGO just goes with the flow.

^ Utterly ghastly. Thanks for nothing - I had successfully managed to erase that one from my memory and now you're brought back the horror.....
  • MinifigsMeMinifigsMe Member Posts: 2,844
I'm not really sure you can do much worse than the current Halloween "spiders" set. Really, Lego? They're spiders??

(can't do a linky as I'm in my phone, which incidentally is determined that linky becomes kinky. Thanks for potential pitfall apple)
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 3,940
^^ Wasn't the space skulls designed by a fan or a Design By Me set? Still baffling.
  • jonboy2000jonboy2000 Member Posts: 259
^^^totally agreed but not a bad set for parts especially when it was on sale in the lego shop for about 8 quid a set.
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
^^^^^ It was basically to raise the profile of LDD and encourage people to use in the hope they could sell there creations. I dont think lego ever gave the designer any money, proberbly as it sold badly as far as I know

To go right back to the OP in this thread, I wasn't keen on Pudsey either, but I bought one from Westfield this evening, built it on the train home, and actually I rather like him! He's quite cute, I think maybe he looks better from a bit of a distance rather than viewed close up - he looks less angular in my opinion, or maybe that's just because I'm tired and getting bleary eyed :)

May I remind you of quite possibly the worst theme ever made.

    ....yeah

Moving on and we have the early 2000's castle buildable figures.
    http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=4943-1

And lastly we have the oddly named and cat like space sets of the 90's.
    http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=2153-1

Also I have forgotten about utter number 1 worst of the worst(clue its in my name).

haha omg... I forgot how terrible Lego could be in the late 90s. I kid you not, I completely managed to remove all recollection of Time Cruisers from my memory until I revisited your link. Thanks.

PS - I applaud the bold attempt, but it just didn't work out at all for me in the end.

  • vortexdragonvortexdragon Member Posts: 24
I didn't know even know Time Cruisers even existed, it's not even mentioned in The Lego Book. There were a lot of terrible sets in the mid to late 90s for sure.
