I wonder if the Garmadon-like color palette is meaningful or if it's just being used for its general evil vibes. I also wonder how many of these guys there will be... After all, it's normal for Ninjago to have at least five baddie figs each year, and the 2012 sets had 19!
I could see that a cyborg Ninja really has potential to draw kids in... While the entire pirate things with Ninjas just seemed a bit odd.
At the bottom there is a code (01) that says 'NINDROID'. :D
It looks quite wonderful to me really! (I always have liked cyborg and cyborg ninjas?!? Mind Blown) I can't really get into Chima because they seem to kiddy, granted Ninjago was marketed towards kids for some reason I loved all of them. (Except some of the final battle sets) Now this appears to be the guy that sells all of these minifigures before anything about them is know. One must wonder how he gets them........
Between it and the leaked minifigure, I'm very excited for what's to come!
Kidding :-)
Yup!!
;-)
Seriously, though, I am looking at it from a what would get my one test subject excited about a product.
Cool looking ninja/robots/droids, would have a greater appeal for my kiddo over pirates. That may not be the case with all kids, but I think that slightly futuristic twist would have bigger appeal to the kids in his class/peer set as well. I do not see as much of an appeal with pirates and ninjas together.
For pirates... I do want to see a twist... not just with Ninjas.
My son would go nuts over A pirate exploration them with lots of cool hidden features and places where treasure is hidden. Exploring strange islands with cool mythical creatures and hunting for treasure... He would go nuts over such a theme.
At this point, though, besides Ninjago the releases for next year seem very blah.
Or perhaps had Chima been another "realm" or "world" within Ninjago's universe, it would have done better.
My 7 year old son and most of his friends like the Speedzor things, but the rest of Chima? Not interested. They still play with Ninjago and are eagerly awaiting its return.
"Excuse me, hello, my Ninja isn't working properly"
"Have you tried turning it off and back on again?"
On a more serious note, is this an indication that Chima has more or less failed in it's mandate to replace Ninjago? I had assumed it was the replacement (the kiddy line with mechs and tanks). Or will we be seeing both series run side by side?
The only nice thing about the Chima cards is the artwork (plus, collect enough and you can play a really crude version of Top Trumps, maybe. Just saying :-) )
From what I understand, Chima was designed to be the 2013 "big bang" theme regardless of what happened to Ninjago, since it was expected to be either downscaled or discontinued completely by this point. I feel like the general assumption that Chima is meant to replace Ninjago has hurt Chima as a theme, but hopefully not beyond recovery.
I certainly feel that Ninjago and Chima can coexist, but if Ninjago is scaled back up from this year then Chima will probably have to be scaled down accordingly. And that doesn't seem like a tough pill to swallow, given how very expansive Legends of Chima has been this year in terms of sets and media. It can afford to scale things back a whole lot without the risk of losing relevance entirely.

The hair pieces for Kai, Lloyd and Overborg are some funky ones compared to the normal fare. While Jay and Cole get normal hair just like what they have in the cartoon. And we get both left & right arms in pearl gray. Cole's mech looks pretty weak compared to the excellent Kai mech and Samurai X before it.
(Well, I don't wish to view confidential watermarked pics that are around elsewhere because, to me anyway, that's a bit of a sin!)

I can't help thinking Thunder Raider has a faint resemblance to #70013 and the Kai Fighter is rather similar to Jay's Storm Fighter (both still looking great though!). The standout set for me though is Overborg Attack, that one takes the
biscuitcookie for me :-PI have to agree that compared to 2012 line, these sets look rather weak. Honestly 70722 fits better as Kraang's ride in TMNT and Cole's mech is not even comparable to #70500
Cole's mech has a pretty lackluster torso design, but its feet, claws/cannons, and cockpit look pretty neat (great use of the LEGO Friends handlebars). Also note the product description: its lack of bulk might be in part because it can attach and detach from Jay's vehicle in the same set. Jay's vehicle, meanwhile, is lovely, and stands out from all previous Ninjago vehicles with its half-track design.
I like how in 70722, there's a small strip of road acting as a ramp, with a trash can and fire hydrant next to it. Ninjago has a wonderfully anachronistic setting, but the sets have rarely acknowledged this: all buildings and structures have been very "historical fantasy" in their design, rather than contemporary or futuristic. I hope we might see some more substantial structures this year as well!
I do wish Lloyd's new bike had stickers with some more ornate decorations, like his emblem or some gold accents. This is Lloyd's first vehicle and while it's a nice design, it doesn't feel as magical as many of the others.
The plane in 70721 is awesome-looking. It doesn't seem to measure up to Jay's Storm Fighter from 2012, but before I can actually evaluate it I'll need to know what play features it might be hiding.
The new Ninja minifigures look awesome with their hair pieces and masks without full hoods. The torso decorations are also nice, with very textile-looking robes like the Ninja's classic or ZX forms, coupled with elemental patterns that echo their NRG forms. It's nice that Lloyd's in green again... I wonder if he'll ever go "Gold Ninja" the way the other Ninja use their NRG forms, or if that power will be abandoned. The villains look pretty cool, though Cyrus Borg almost looks like he just stepped out of LEGO Agents!
Also, I just have to say I love the packaging with its emphasis on Zane and the Nindroid blueprints!
