Lego needs to have a luxury private yatch set and maybe also a luxury private jet

I just noticed now looking at the dolphin cruiser lego friend set that there is no real equivalent regular lego city equivalence.. Now i've seen a few fan design ones like this:

http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/16313 or

http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/46973

i think it's a good idea. what everyone think?

I doubt there is much call for a 1.5m yacht as a regular set like the MOCpages one.
  • wildpigwildpig Member Posts: 13
probably not for a 1.5 m one but just a regular lego city or something like that with around 600 pieces like the dolphin cruiser would be nice.

I see a lot of great Friend's sets that I wish were regular sets so that I could get them in non nauseating colors. :-)

The colors don't bother me so much as the Friends line taking away sets that would work just as well in City (bakeries, cafés, karate classes, etc.). I wish they'd just combine the two back into the "Town" of yesteryear, but I suppose we're well beyond that now.

They could do it, they would just have to have one of the stores being robbed apparently in order for it to have 'action' just like the LEGO museum and bank

Guess I am correct. For a second I thought I missed such a set looking around... I also like a nice executive jet set.... they would make an executive/celebrity set with such jet, a nice yatch, with maybe a nice house, etc..

It is a well known fact that boys only like Fire/Police/Rescue sets and always will like those sets only. Now if it was a Police yacht, yes. A civilian yacht? Gosh no.

hmm, guess thats must be what the market research says. They've been cranking out nonstop iterations of those forever.. I actually have the second to latest iteration of those. After a while i wish for something different.

I have the Helicopter and Limousine set. So I was hoping they would have additional sets along that theme. A nice private yatch and an executive jet and a nice big mansion would go real good with that set.

With the exception of Helicopter and Limo I don't think LEGO like to celebrate plutocracy in their sets. There is a Disney joke there for someone! ;-)
  • wildpigwildpig Member Posts: 13
they only have to redo their dolphin cruiser in traditional lego.... that is a wierd thing that their market research department would think that young girls are more into plutocracy.... or is that really what the market research find?
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
They have made one, if you don't like the colours then change them. I don't think it would be so good to have the same model in two different series, just in different colours. Especially if available at the same time.

IMO add this to the "list" of wonderful sets TLG could create and either won't due to size and budget or maybe it will be done in 2015! Either way; I agree great idea and having some sort of a luxury line or sub theme would be great.

Don't we get bits and pieces? Yes the helicopter and limo were a one stop shop but even with today's palace cinema we get albeit an old school limo but with some other sets, like the town hall, we get tid bits of "executives" and "upper crust" so for me at the moment it would seem as though we are all better suited to use our imagination and build off of what we currently have.

I am kinda tired of the same theme of cargo planes or passenger planes or cargo ships.... Guess will have to just build the bare yatch or plane and then do the interior customization myself. Just like in the real world...

There was a private jet set that was an airline promotional a couple of years ago. Plus, there was a helicopter taxi and limo before that.

^ #7696 Lovely little set but I am a sucker for airline promo sets.

You'll find some of them if you just search "airline" in the database. For example, #1973 and #6368. These might be hard to find, though, as they were exclusives sold only in duty free shops/on airliners (and some of those are quite old...).
Edit: #1774 is the same build as #1973, but is not an exclusive...might be easier? But I don't know about any of the more recent ones.
  • plasmodiumplasmodium Member Posts: 1,956
Edit again: If you want to find more of the airline exclusives, the place to look is here: http://www.brickset.com/browse/themes/?theme=Town&subtheme=Special and here: http://www.brickset.com/browse/themes/?theme=City&subtheme=Airport (includes the one @SirKevBags found). How about #1818 as a unique runabout for your City's exclusive class!

Dude on the #1818 box at the left looks like he's missed his plane and the luggage guy is being a jerk refusing him a lift back to the terminal.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
^ He's lucky. The pilot can't reach the controls.

^ Plus I'm not convinced that thing would actually fly anyway. In fact, maybe that's why the ground crew guy is speeding off because he knows Crazy Bob the Pilot's new flying contraption is two seconds away from being a crater in the ground right where he was parked?

One thing I don't really understand is if Lego is so determined to follow market research then why haven't they crossed their previous taboos and produced an army line, something that market research would most definitely show boys as wanting?

It just seems a little inconsistent to me, on one hand market research is stopping them doing anything new and interesting in the city line, and on the other they'll ignore the market and refuse to do certain things with city?

^ Actually, #1818 is based on a real airplane, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beechcraft_Starship, which admittedly didn't sell very well...

It is down to company values / morals vs profit. It is good to know that if they have drawn a line they will not cross it. Although, they have of course crossed it in some lines already, especially IJ.

Is that because the pilot couldn't reach the controls in the real thing too?

I was going to say, didn't creating the Red Baron and later the Sopwith Camel kind of cross that line quite blatantly already?

How long do you stick to your morals for too? Where exactly do you draw the line?

We always had mediaeval armies, we later got pirates and imperial soldiers with rifles, we eventually got western and the lone ranger including armies from the Americas which could reach into the early 20th century. World War I is only a few years on from that.

It just all seems very arbitrary, and I'd be intrigued to know what sort of responses they'd get if they surveyed a broad range of parents and asked "How would you feel about Lego releasing army sets?" as to whether it would make any difference to the brand now.

I actually got #6368. Kinda a simplistic commuter jet along with #7696. #1973 is really just a passenger jet. Was hoping for one with a different interiors than endless rows of seats in usual passenger carrying jets. Things like a bedroom, conference room, unconventional seat layout like divan seatings, etc....

#1818 aircraft is actually a cool design. definitely not a regular passenger bus....
  • OldfanOldfan Member Posts: 706
^The narrow fuselage of the original airport system 'planes don't allow for much in the way of customization along the lines of what you'd like to see. One of the airline exclusives (#1775, maybe?) might have had one forward-facing and one backward-facing seat; now that's a custom interior!

You might have better luck creating such a MOC with one of the new City large airplanes, where the interior is several studs wide instead of just 2...
  • wildpigwildpig Member Posts: 13
#7893 actually has 2 seating isles with rotating chairs in first class :). I guess what i could do is take out the seats and do my own seating layout. as for a bed and bar that might be a little harder.

i have this set for a while. guess will have to see what i can do with it. #3182 also has 2 seating isles.
  • wildpigwildpig Member Posts: 13
#7893 is the best city plane set IMO followed by #3182. all other planes are too small inside. Anyone else know of another bigger plane set?

So am i stuck for now getting the dolphin cruiser set if i want a yatch? this set definitely look out of place with all other city set

There have been many other yacht-type boats in Lego City history, but they may look out of place for a different reason: whereas the Friends one is the wrong colour, the ones I'm thinking of may look too angular.

The other thing is, if you're looking through Brickset for these, bear in mind that "City" used to be called "Town" before about 2005, which is where most of the ones I can think of are. For example, off the top of my head, there is #4011, which may be a little small.

Swap out the teal and the tiny little bit of pink trim work with non-pastel colors (perhaps blue or black instead) and you've got a whole different look. Honestly, it's not that many pieces. the interior is probably fine as is, though you could change out the beds and couch too I suppose.

#4642 is a more modern example, but it's a lot sparser.

In general, all Friends sets tend to be bigger and more well-furnished than non-exclusive City sets. This is so they're optimized for "dollhouse"-style play. Olivia's house probably isn't SUPPOSED to be a mansion and the City house released in 2010 probably isn't SUPPOSED to be tiny and sparse, but they seem like that compared to each other because LEGO Friends is more detail-oriented. Same goes with Dolphin Cruiser and the classic Cabin Cruiser, so it's not purely a problem with the "modern" City theme. It applied nearly as much to classic Town.

Note also that most City sets the size of the Dolphin Cruiser have more potential for vehicle-based play, because that's how boys are more likely to feel like they're getting more for their money. A boat with a bathroom is no better than a boat without a bathroom if your preferred play scenarios don't involve bathrooms. But throw in an additional seaplane or motorboat, and you can add a whole different kind of play potential for the same price you might have spent enlarging and furnishing the main vessel.

BTW, I don't have a problem with the Dolphin Cruiser's colors at all. Google images of cabin cruisers and you'll find all kinds of color schemes, with azure and white being a fairly common one. In fact, pastel colors are all over the place in seaside and maritime settings, at least from my experience. Part of the reason is probably that they won't fade as visibly in the sun and humidity as brighter or bolder colors.

#4011 and #4642 are not exactly what i would call yatch, more like small fishing boats. Even with dolphin cruiser, might have to enlarge it for a heli landing pad :)

They're basically both cabin cruisers (the smallest variety of yacht), which is the same as what the Dolphin Cruiser is basically aiming to be, based on the size of its crew and the accommodations for said crew. That was my point: a lot of things in LEGO Friends are just BIGGER than their counterparts in LEGO City due to the emphasis on interior furnishings and detail. So really, LEGO Town and LEGO City have HAD yachts of the same class as the Dolphin Cruiser; they're just not such big or detailed models.

Seems to me like #41015 Dolphin cruiser is more than just a cabin cruiser. Theres the spiral water slide.... Theres space for the jetski. Three decks. Its definite more in the luxury yatch category than small fishing boat.

On balance, though, I think in this case wildpig's point outweighs the small crew argument, since official LEGO sets in general involve fewer people than their real-life equivalents, and nothing really scales properly: they're all pretty impressionistic renderings.
