Cheapest way to tile large areas

I'm looking at the Shiptember competition coming up and I was just wondering if anyone had done the maths on which size tile is the cheapest for covering large areas? So far, it appears to me to be using 2 x 2 with grooves at around 5p each for light bluish grey. This could be based on any colour though.

    You may want to explain what Shiptember is.

    Oh and some PAB walls had 2x2 LBG tiles, not sure if that would work out cheaper, in my head it feels like they would be.

    It is if you shake the cup to settle unstackable elements and stack when you can. There is a lego PAB cup topic on the general board of Eurobricks where people share tips

    Are you trying to tile it in a particular color or just tile an area? From a quick look at average part pricing for new tiles 1x8 in black is one of the cheapest per area.

    Cheapest way to tile large areas? B&Q box of 44 tiles for about £3, you can cover a whole bathroom for less than £70 (not including the grouting). ;)

    PAB would be the cheapest for tiles, make sure you shake the cup a little after every small handful, you can pack a lot in there.

    Ask someone at your local LBR store what boxes of 2x2 tiles they have in the back (the ones they use to stock the PAB wall). I've managed to acquire a plentiful supply of a small number of colors of this part that way: red, yellow, light bley. I wish there were more selection in the colors that TLG makes available to LBR PAB walls, but at least you can get something in large quantities on occasion. It's at least worth asking.

    ^ and how does pricing work for such? Is it by weight or is there a fixed cost for a box?

    $70/box, as of the last time I did it, which was maybe 2 months ago. The boxes are all a standard size, which is roughly a gallon, I think.

    More than that. To be exact: The box dimensions (outer) are 9.5"x6"x7.75" = 441.75 cu. in., or about 1.9 gal, though some of that is air space. They don't pack them really tight.

    I think boxes of the same item vary some in terms of piece count. In any case, I only went through the pain (and I do mean pain) of manually counting one of the boxes of 2x2 tiles that I've bought this way. The next time I do it, it will be with a counting scale, but I don't own one at the moment. And your question reminded me that that would be a good topic for another thread.

    In any case, the box I counted clocked in at 4584 pieces.

    I know you all want to do the math: that would be under 1.53 cents/ea. (Now go and revisit the whole fair price/part issue... 10¢ apiece? Really?)

    I fit almost 750 2x2 tiles in a large PAB cup. Averages about 1.5p per brick. Not.bad.at.all....
