[US] TRU BOGO 50% Off ALL* LEGO

JosephJoseph Member Posts: 629
edited September 2013 in Shopping USA/Canada
Surprisingly enough TRU is doing a BOGO 50% off on Lego this week and the only exclusion listed is Mindstorms! Even more surprising is the fact that they have a Technic set shown with the ad implying that exclusives may be a part of it too.

Also in the flyer are a couple other offers that might stack with these:
A one time use coupon for a $10 gift card with purchase of $40 or more (looks to be in-store only)
$10 off your Lego purchase of $100 dollars or more with a TRU credit card (that one may or may not stack as it excludes "Hot Price" items).

^ While that sounds wonderful, they have done that before, only to have the big stuff not actually work in the cart.

Someone update us when it goes live tonight or tomorrow and let us know what does and doesn't work.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,634
Undoubtedly the "Hot Price" stuff will be immune to the sale. But they have been known to have glitches before like the glorious Easter Glitch of 2012

^^ Quite true, I'm rather skeptical myself; but I'm still hoping there will be at least a couple decent deals that come from it.

So I'm interested in #70004 Hobbit Barrel Escape currently $50.99 (it was "on sale" for RRP of $39.99 until the latest 20% off sale.) With BOGO 50% that will make one $50.99 a second one $25.50 for a total of $75.49. That makes each $37.75. WOW a 5% sale off RRP!! I was looking at this online and I got one of those "Do you need help chat windows" So I responded and chatted about ToysRUs deceptive sales tactics. Got various responses, but one was "we will match any competitors advertised price plus the 20% sale offer." I responded that "competitors don't advertise RRP"

Agreed on TRU's crappy pricing. But advertised prices can be online prices, pull up Target, Amazon, whatever...

Let's hope some of the modulars and exclusive sets can be used for BOGO. Does this start tonight at midnight? (Sunday 9/22)

Except I would be very surprised if any LEGO on sale currently will either be on sale after tomorrow morning or listed as the aforementioned 'hard to find' or 'hot price' exclusions.
I would be surprised if TRU gets people worked up for a BOGO50 still? It has been ages since LEGO has not left their 'retail' at 20-40% above normal retail and then had their 'BOGO50' which normally will equate to paying retail for two sets.
Ill probably check tomorrow morning later, but I'm not going to get up at 5-6am to see the sale go into effect (as TRU also has not set a sale to start at 12:01am Sunday for a while now)

@Joseph - I didn't see a flyer in my paper. Where did you find one?
  • JosephJoseph Member Posts: 629
    ^ In the paper.

I was looking online and it seems everything is a hot price.

Yes, any Hot Price items are excluded from any promotions. Modulars unfortunately fall into this category.

Toys R Us has done a complete reversal from where they were ~2 years ago. I'm afraid they're not a reliable "go to" anymore for discounted LEGO. :(

Forget to mention that their business model seems to be geared toward the short term rather than long term.

I just put two hit price items in my cart and it did give me half off on the second one.
  • legogregorslegogregors Member Posts: 402
Which sets, I am not having any luck with vw bus or palace cinema?
  • DoubleDDoubleD Member Posts: 488
No not with hard to find I tried that just the regular hot price.
  • DoubleDDoubleD Member Posts: 488
Only if they sold them at stores I bet you could get them bogo half off. But they never have the hard to find at stores.
  • ckenda1ckenda1 Member Posts: 121
One of the items can be "Hot Price - no additional discounts" (ie. Modulars, etc) and one of them can just be "Hot Price" (no mention of no additional discounts). The latter will be reduced half price.

It won't work if you add 2 modulars or 2 sets that are marked "Hot Price and no additional discounts."

    Ultimately.. not a hot deal.
  • BlueMoonUSABlueMoonUSA Member Posts: 116
Friends Dolphin Cruiser says no additional discounts....but the discount applies.
  • ckenda1ckenda1 Member Posts: 121
    edited September 2013
^ It does actually work, but only if the non "no additional discounts" item is a higher priced item like the Lego Town Square.

But the same method doesn't work other times with similar products. LOL
  • BlueMoonUSABlueMoonUSA Member Posts: 116
Gotcha. I'm trying to decide at this point whether the Dolphin Cruiser paired with the Chima Croc Swamp hideout (both are at MSRP) would be a good deal at about $53 each at this relatively early stage in their release.

Almost any desirable set falls into either 'hot price items' or 'hard to find' which are excluded for deals.
And anything else is at least 20% over retail (like the aforementioned Town Square, same with LEGO city garage as well).. really it is a joke.
For those 'deals' Ill wait until October and double points at LEGO to get the sets I want. I will not get the money off right away until I use points, but I am not going to buy from TRU to save a whopping 5% on their 'BOGO50' (cause you cannot forget sales tax either)

I notice that the Mobile Crane is eligible, as is the Unimog, though looks like you'll have to get them in store.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,789
Yeah either TRU 'ran out of online stock' or people were doing their homework and found those are to be had for a decent deal during this BOGO50 and bought them out earlier this morning when the BOGO went online (wow... about 20% off of the crane still? TRU must be slipping or something, I'm sure they'll 'fix' this for the next BOGO50)

Where did this come from...? It says "see back for details". Does it need to have 2 sides?
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Way too many games to try to save $5, when most of these sets are on sale @ Target/Walmart/Amazon most of the time.

What is it about these "deals" that keeps people coming back for more? I guess PT Barnum was right. :(

I got the link from Toysnbricks. I think the "back" in this case is the right side. In the newspaper flyer all you can see is the left side, so I presume the exclusions would be on the back.

^^ It came from this weeks flyer; it does say on the back that it must be the original coupon (not copied etc.) but otherwise it should work on at least some Lego.
  • JosephJoseph Member Posts: 629
Blah, even though there are a few "Hot Price" items that are included anyway (that can be see on these pages) none of them are very interesting. The only "deal" I can find is two #70705 for about 30% off (which still isn't very good).

I took a look around on TRU's website, and saw three other sets that are RRP or less.

LEGO Galaxy Squad Star Slicer 70703 $39.99 (RRP)
LEGO Architecture Falling Water 21005 $99.99 (RRP)
LEGO Architecture The Leaning Tower of Pisa 21015 $27.99 (RRP $34.99)

21015 was a surprise, since with the BOGO, if you buy two, they end up being 40% off for each.
  • BlueMoonUSABlueMoonUSA Member Posts: 116
#70006 Cragger's Command was a "Hot Deal" of 69.99 in store (as opposed to 89.99 online). It successfully stacked with the TRU exclusive 70014 Croc Hideout for a BOGO50 total of $105. I was also able to get the $10 gift card for spending over $40 on toys. All that coupled with the 10% in rewards points, will probably be about $45 for each after all is said and done.

About the best deal I'm likely to get at Toysrus :)

I totally stocked up on Krang polybags. They had almost 100 of them... They had a stack of the flyers at the guest service counter near the store entrance. Also noticed an upcoming Friends in-store event.

#70011 is a pretty good deal too. It's $34 now, which is $6 less than retail and it stacks with the BOGO sale. And #70014 is at retail, both are TRU "exclusives."
  • GIR3691GIR3691 Member Posts: 674
I went to the TRU Times Square today and tried to get two modulars. The B1G1 sign in the LEGO section only said that excluded Mindstorms. Figured it was worth a shot. Brought them to the counter, seemed to all be going well. Then the computer rejected the discount. Drat.

On the plus side, they have an entire pallet worth of DeLoreans priced at $39.99 TRU online has them for $44.99 and they're sold out at LEGO [email protected], so I got two with the BOGO for about $33 each with tax ($2 under MSRP). Not a fantastic deal, but all things considered I'm pleased with that find compared to TRU Online or eBay.

Good job. Those polys were going for $10+ just last week. Prices are much more reasonable now, especially for the overseas market. Good for army building though.

    @bmwlego Sorry, man. I tried.

@murphquake The cashier asked another person over who may have been a manager who told me the only discount I'd get would be 10% off for getting their store credit card. After that I gave up.
  • DoubleDDoubleD Member Posts: 488
If it wasn't marked at the store I think I may throw a fit. I can see online with disclaimers but at the store if it only said technic, that is a lot different and worth fit throwing.
  • GIR3691GIR3691 Member Posts: 674
I saw that they were excluded online ahead of time, I know this discount situation on them in general, it was late on a Sunday, and TRU does that kind of thing all the time. Disappointed but not surprised. I just let it go.

Sale's going on for a few more days, if anyone else wants to try throwing a fit.

I was able to get #60014 for BOGO 50% even though it was already marked down to $64.99 in store. Came to $97.49 for both.

I went last week to TRU trying to us the 20% coupon, at checkout the cashier, scan the item and then the coupon, and tell it is $71, I told her that was not possible, she looked at the ticket and told me that the coupon did not apply.. well would have been nice to tell me..
Anyway, I asked why, she didn't know, called the manager and after 5 minutes she came back and told me that it was a hot item and I can't use the coupon. I then asked how can I recognize the hot items in store, she told me that the only way was to take the item to the customer service desk and ask if it applies.
I was almost temped to take to CS a cart full of hot items and making a point of having a stack of popular stocks were the coupon didn't apply, but was not worth my time,..

Same problem I had yesterday. I don't own a smartphone so I can't check the website to see what counts and what doesn't! They need to actually label things.

i took a couple items to the register, saw the price after BOGO50 and left empty-handed.

I will give TLG credit... they clearly got ahead of production on BTTF and made sure Minecraft didn't repeat.

    Good for them.

In my TRU, they had 'Hot Item' tags bracketing the price tags, one on each side of the price tag. I kid you not, these were on half of the items in the LEGO aisle. I walked out of the store without spending a dime. That's got to be a new low in TRU restrictions. Two years ago I spent thousands at TRU on personal LEGO purchases, now I don't even think I've spent more than a couple of hundred bucks there on anything. The prices are insane and when they do have a sale the restrictions are so cumbersome that it feels like I'm doing my taxes. Just not worth the hassle.

I breezed through one of my local TRUs yesterday to check this sale out. I wanted some Technic, but 75% off of their inflated prices didn't work out to anything favorable enough to spring for, in that or any other category. The one set that almost pushed me over the edge was 9486 Oil Rig Escape, which they're still trying to move, with no success. Walked out anyway. If this sale is good for anything, it is an opportunity to pick up some cheap HF, for anyone with an interest in that.

I really have to wonder how TRU maintains, when anyone with two neurons to rub together can figure out that they'll do better elsewhere.
