As the seasonal sets are now available at S@H, and PO #10222 is still marked as retired, can we now assume that PO is gone for good?

    I fixed your grammar.

The answer is no, you can't assume anything with Lego and retiring. What's on Lego's site when you look at it means little more than the situation at that exact point in time.

Is it likely gone for good? I think it is from production, but who knows if they'll find a couple pallets in a warehouse.

Btw @prevere, if it is retired (which I think it is actually), the TS, the Bakery and the PO may have had only 1.5 total years out, but they each had two full xmas seasons, which is what really counts for these sets.
    Barely.

Post Office - Availability at LEGO.com
    United States 04 Oct 11 - 09 Dec 12
    $69.99
I'm pretty certain the PO was out at least through Feb 13, even at S@H. Shrug.

Just confirmed with Grogall that the Post Office was supposed to be coming back this fall but plans have changed at TLG and he confirmed it will NOT be back.

Honestly, Lego is due to have a City-themed post office. They could even make it a special USPS edition (or FedEx / UPS - I don't care). I think they've done maybe 2 since the age of men started.

Thoughts on the Epic Dragon Battle #9450 ? It seems like the flagship set of the green box sets but has been hanging out on Amazon discount rack for quite a while now.... will it still be in the next wave of Ninjago shows? Just saw some for $65 at WM so a pretty good deal on its own but to resell...

Just saw JP at Target for $91. Even thought RRP is $119, its been >$99 somewhere pretty much its entire life. This is going away soon. Not sure that $91 makes me a buyer. Thoughts?

I bought at a low on Amazon around $85? I can't remember exactly, but it was roughly that. Anyways, yes. even at $91, if you have interest go for it. A good set with a lot of "classic" background to it, most formidably right from this site.

Its well worth it both in terms of figures and playability when paired with RP.

^I love the set. It is overpriced, but $99.99 is what I think the set should have been. I grabbed 3 the last TRU BUY 2 Get one Free deal. They had it on sale, plus I used a coupon for another 10% off. I ended up getting 3 for $72.98 a piece. I also bought another one for $84.25 back in March on Amazon.

Themes that came and went. The first wave of City EMS sets are pricey. The 7890 ambulance sells for about $100

Yeah, I am going to buy some Rancor Pits to pair with JP and sell as a combo.

Imo, Ninjago is a risky bet now. Lego is putting all their weight behind Chima and who knows if the cartoon will resume or if it will take off again. At 50% off, why not, but I've been passing otherwise. This is also the first I've heard of Epic Battle getting the 50% off treatment. Anyone else seen this? I found the samurai set for 50% off at "one" Walmart out of the 50 closest to me.

JP's real RRP is $95, regardless of what the sticker says. The only store that ever sold the set for $120 was Lego. Still, I think you can do reasonably well with it down the road.

Most everything that was worth buying right now is gone unless you buy it for full RRP from Lego. Its my contention its best to just sit tight right now and wait for BF or other holiday sales. This is the time of year to start unloading inventory and be cash ready :)

Ninjago was so last year :p

I sold 5 or 6 Epic Dragon Battles last Christmas for an average of $175, I paid $80 landed from John Lewis in the UK. I think part of the success was that Ninjago was a hot item last Christmas and this particular set was almost impossible to find in store at the time here.

Since then they have been on sale every where online and Lego has being pushing Chima. At the moment $130 is about the limit for this set. Although that may change getting closer to Christmas.

I think that there is still interest in Ninjago though, I just sold 4 x Ninjago Venomari Shrine #9440 for $20 each (got these from TRU during a BOGO and they were already on sale.) I probably could have asked more as they sold quick.

It will be interesting to see what sets are the hot ones for Xmas. I honestly don't have a good feeling about any one or two items as those must haves. I need to feel through the force more I guess.

Lego's temporarily out of stock list is rather thin at the moment.

  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
    edited September 2013
^Yes, because of a few things. I think there will be a renewal of the Pirate Theme, especially since the new Pirates movie is delayed until 2016. There is a huge Pirate ship getting a lot of votes on Cuusoo and I think there will be a remake of the Black Pearl when the new movie comes out.

If you grabbed The Black Pearl for around $70, I think selling at $200 is a great return.
  • RennyRenny Member Posts: 1,145
Now is a good time to sell the Black Pearl but I think there is still plenty of time for it to go higher. I think the introduction of a pirate theme will actually strengthen the desire to get the older pirate themed ships. Supply hasn't increased but demand will which will drive the price up more.

2016 for the next Pirates movie is a long ways away. I don't see Lego making toys for a movie 2 or 3 years early. As for the Cuusoo project that has a snowflakes chance in you know what of being approved. 5700 pieces? Really? Even trimmed down to 750 pieces is too much for a Cuusoo project compared to the previous entries.

^^Picked up a small stack of BP at $50 and QAR at $80 each way back when I was toying with the idea of reselling. Just thought it would end up closer to 3x before topping out. The long term bet is too simply wait for the next PotC movie and gamble these two don't get rehashed. Similar to the explosion of Batman I mostly happening after the new series hit.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
^I agree. There is still room for it to grow, but you can say that for just about any popular retired set. I'm sure it will reach 2.5x RRP sometime.

I'm 100% positive the Cuusoo ship will not make it, but its popularity should inspire Lego to make another Pirate ship or two.
  • RennyRenny Member Posts: 1,145
Hope I didn't sound too negative in my post. I hope what you say comes true and they are inspired by the cuusoo project. I love the ships and would jump at the chance to add more to my collection.

^^Right. I was just referring to sets in general and not based on what was out of stock right now. Batcave could be just about right. Limited stock towards the end of year and priced just right for a nice big set under the tree.

Hey, since I know every single person in this thread probably owns a Death Star they might want to sell, I've got a nice military/fireman guy trying to buy one for his son at a little discount. There is no reason for me to charge him shipping all the way across the country (especially for both these sets), so if anyone near Roseville, CA, wants to sell a SSD or Death Star (or both), PM me. I'll set you up with him.

How do people feel about the future of the Creator Architectural sets (Sydney Opera House)? I personally love them, as I feel the normal architectural sets are horrible. Too small, uninteresting, and they occasionally pick really weird buildings to do, and most of them just look like a blocky mess.

Is a ~$320 architectural building too niche? Does the lack of playability hurt it over the long term?
  • BoiseStateBoiseState Member Posts: 804
I don't like the architecture sets.. Never built one though, and honestly I've never built a set that I disliked.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,836

I think that the more expensive the set, and especially now that discounts- and maybe lower prices in general- are not allowed for such 'exclusive' sets via LEGO, that the prices will increase in the secondary market. It depends on if other retailers can still put these on sale, which is not determined yet (I think we will have a better idea as Fall approaches as that is when Walmart and Amazon went bananas on the prices of some sets, including Tower bridge, if I am not mistaken).
So if these sets are no longer to be found at substantial discounts I do not see many people buying them, which means less supplies once they are gone. Then the more iconic, and IMO the Opera House is amazing looking, the likely demand will be higher.
That being said I think Tower bridge is a bit iffy only due to the number of times they were put on a sale. But the Sydney opera house may be worth getting one to hold onto.
As for Playability, I would say look at Effel Tower and Taj Mahal, both of which are large models and not 'minifig' scale, and do pretty darn well.

But those were both produced in a time before lego collectability and appreciation, but I do agree. Especially with the popularity of legos in Australia, there could be some long term value here. I definitely think it is more impressive than Tower Bridge.

I've seen both the Sydney Opera House and Tower Bridge in person. The SOH is rather unimpressive in my opinion. To me, it just doesn't look very good, and that's why I probably wont be buying it. The TB looks nice to me; I already own the TB, but just haven't gotten around to building it.

I realize all of this is very subjective, but based on previous comments I've read here, I'm certainly not alone in my opinion regarding the SOH. It's rather hard to say whether or not the SOH will do well post-EOL. My guess is that it wont do well for two reasons: 1) It doesn't look as impressive as the other large architecture/creator sets such as TB, ET and TAJ; and 2) the MSRP is already pretty pricey at $320, so buyers would have to be willing to shell out a lot more than that to buy it post-EOL. I just don't see it happening to an extent that makes it worthwhile as an investment.
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
TB is $80 less than SOH, for a far larger part count.

Granted, those parts are all small, but it "appears" at first glance to be more "value".

I'm actually quite surprised they didn't do $299 on SOH, is the extra $20 needed so badly as to make breaking the $300 number worth it? Why not just go to $349 then?

But one good thing about that is that it's a great set for two people to do. My wife and I built it together and it worked really well, did not feel repetitive at all doing it that way :)

Yep. One reason we like it so much is that we had 4 kids building at the same time.
