As to the rarity, I counted 22 currently available, and the seller has also sold Mr Gold customs in his completed items. Interesting for sure, but not for me.

$20?!?! For a single minifig, row boat, and cannon? This seller has been listing A LOT of sets from my childhood, and it's been fun to watch. They had a very reasonable $75.00 price tag on the Black Seas Barracuda, but when it came to these tiny sets they are ridiculously overpriced.
However, I will say that this little set DOES have one rare piece in it: next time you're looking through your bin of pirate hats see how many you have without the skull and crossbones printed on...

It just slays me that some folks have to ask a stratospheric price for something they may have received for free.
I am currently building 7 sets as gifts and one for me using BL. Yes, there are a couple of rare parts... the black string (use something else!,) a 6x14 black plate, a dark blue gray 2x2 axle, etc., BUT NOTHING MAKING IT WORTH anywhere near USD900! (Now I do feel much better having said this!)
It would be outstanding if TLG offered this rare set to the public for $25. and killed the resellers profits on this gift. Nope, I am not against all resellers, just those that are flagrantly greedy.

10 very angry people, or a few really pissed off folks who bought more than 1.

It's no wonder they can't find the box!
I wonder if they're wondering why that figure is getting so may views? I'm tempted to leave a comment on the auction page asking for details of exactly which LotR set it's from...
