Here is a claim that BrickQueen plagiarized a custom minfig design. It's tangentially related and interesting: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=85835

@rocao Very interesting indeed. It seems there were other things that happened leading up to her account getting banned from Cuusoo.

This has been coming for some time.

Very little that makes it on cuusoo is original. Virtually everything is based on other IP and often very possibly on other people's lego builds. BTTF made it and yet there have been many custom BTTF models published on the internet in the past, some very similar to the one that made it. Same with Ghostbusters. Same with Jurassic Park. These two cuusoo submissions fighting - neither are really very original. Both have been done many times before. BrickQueen's one is pretty poor. It is a fairly standard and otherwise anonymous vehicle apart from the JP branding decals stuck across bricks (yuck), with an existing lego dinosaur. Nothing original.

This has been coming as cuusoo really is just a voting system to see what popular IPs there are out there. In my view, it would be better that if an existing IP is used, then the cuusoo submission gets nothing. That would remove the financial element to it. Also lego should completely redesign the model. Let cuusoo be what it has become - a popularity IP contest. At least the BTTF fee was paid to charity.

Then there should be another side. A lego fan side - where only original work not based on someone else's IP goes. I love some of the ideas for new parts, yet they are never going to make it. Some of the genuinely original models are also inspiring but again not going to make it in the popularity contest.

Whether or not her models were good or bad there is something very strange going on and we probably will never know why. Her channel on YouTube is definitely geared towards the younger audience and I saw some of the comments and they were every childish. In any case she may find out why she was kicked off and it may or may not be fair and anything else really is speculation.

I subscribed to her channel ages ago but very rarely watch anything on it, only usually when I'm really bored.

I've said it before; Cuusoo should prohibit anything but original designs. Any designs based on intellectual property not held by the designer would simply be purged. In that way, if the owner of a particular IP submitted a design, it would remove the question of whether or not a particular licensed model was possible.

So, if I submitted a model of the TARDIS from Doctor Who it would simply be purged regardless of the votes. However, if I wrote and produced a film called "Big Breasted Women Attack Mars", a model of a spaceship from that film would be eligible (at least for review).

I was just wondering if any of the big YouTube Lego people are on here. Is she a member? How about the guys on Brick Show? I have always wanted to talk with the guy from brickformula. He is hilarious.

I think it's quite likely that they are reading the topics here. But I'd be surprised if the Brick Show guys ever posted here though. It's clearly a job for them and they don't strike me as actual fans of Lego. (This is my impression after watching only a few of their videos. Maybe I'm wrong.)

By the way I don't really understand all these Jurassic Park submissions. Elementary logic dictates that they are dead in the water. The Dino theme was essentially JP minus the licence. If LEGO wanted or could they would have purchased the licence for it. Don't think they will reconsider because of 10k CUUSOO votes.

At least one of the projects uses an excellent brick-built dinosaur which distances it somewhat from the Dino theme. But probably even that is still too close.

@Hardrada I wonder how many of the current licensed sets would sell if they were not licensed. Most superheroes sets come to mind instantly.

One perfect example is BTTF, remove the MFs and put that car in a creator set, see who'd buy that. A Jurrasic Park set would sell better than the entire DIno theme simply because it's a JP set. If they actually recreated an iconic scene from the movie, that would drive the interest 100%. But it would surely sell even if it was, to put it plainly, a crap set.

This entire debacle is completely foolish. I understand devoting yourself to something but when your world revolves around the opinions of people whom you have never seen watching you on the Internet then you need to take a step back and reevaluate your life.

I shudder to think what may happen to some people if the Internet stopped working and they were suddenly stuck building for an audience of just themselves.

Who else remembers these: #1370 #1371? If Lego ever makes a Jurassic park set(s) it will come when the fourth movie does and it will be their own idea(s) and not a Cuusoo one.

As for all the commotion about this person, I am inclined to think the Cuusoo Team probably has the best idea of what is going on and the ban was probably deserved even if we never find out why.

Even if Jurassic Park sets would sell better my point still stands:
TLG decided to make a non-licensed Dino theme just recently. They must have surely considered their options and either the extra cost of the licence was not worth it or they found the subject material too adult or maybe the license was simply not available. Whether because of any of that or something completely different they didn't go for the JP license, and I highly doubt that a few CUUSOO projects would make them change their minds or invalidate their reasons for not taking up the license before.
  • SchwallexSchwallex Member Posts: 121
@vitreolum: I think @Hardrada's point is that TLG know all that, everything you just stated. Obviously they could have made JP sets but instead consciously opted to do generic Dinos instead. And obviously they didn't just toss a coin, but will have solid reasons. They know everything we know, and more.

Frankly, all that these JP projects do is demonstrate that their creators think they are somehow smarter than TLG. "Ohmygod, they thought of Dinos, but they never thought of Jurassic Park!" Please. Give me a break.
  • bricksanbricksan Member Posts: 566
What it is with Cuusoo project owners they see having a project with IP as a sure fire way to get to 10,000 supporters. They have seen the success of BTTF and now two Ghostbusters are most likely to hit 10,000 to get reviewed.

So people are now thinking which movie IP is most likely to be the most popular and get me to 10,000 supporters, I do think the whole Cuusoo idea needs rethinking in terms of what can be submitted. I personally think once one idea of an IP has been submitted no more can be added it would stop the conflict and if people like it they can vote for the one on there. Like JP you have half a dozen all based on same IP with supporters bashing each other, if there was one it would get there a lot quicker.

At the moment it seems Cuusoo takes one step forward and two back and I can understand why it is still in BETA.

And I can just take their dino and stick it next to a car and slap on a JP logo and give me the money, my fans demand it.

At least the brick built dinos creators put some effort in.

It's an odd situation, and no mistake.
I'm not overly familiar with the whole Cuusoo thing - I've registered, and voted for one or two designs that I liked, but clearly there's a whole bunch of politics that goes on in the background that has passed me by.

If BrickQueen hasn't broken any rules, as she and many others suggest, then I would imagine that she will have her page and designs reinstated before too long. If she has broken some T&C's, then it's unlikely to come out. BQ herself is hardly going to do it (unless it turns out to be a genuine mistake), and TLG have already made it clear they won't comment on the detail.

@Bustin makes an interesting point though. In the video, BrickQueen says that she just loves designing and building sets. While the Cuusoo situation is unfortunate, it in no way stops her working with Lego. All it does is remove her audience who come to her direct through Cuusoo.

And if she has a Youtube channel, then there's nothing stopping her continuing with that, designing sets and showing them off to her fanbase.

I'm not knocking her - I'd never heard of the lady before yesterday, so I wish her well, both in her efforts to have her access to Cuusoo reinstated, and her future builds, but it does seem like a storm in a teacup.

    Just my $0.02

Brickqueen's "Minions" called these new projects "Copycats" of hers, but the reality is that hers was just a variation of something that already existed on Cuusoo...

Sure, they most likely considered all these options but maybe the reason they decided not to waste money on this IP is that they considered there's not enough interest in JP anymore. Afterall most of the children today have no interest in it, for many Lord of the Rings is too old.

But as a cuusoo project thing change somewhat, if it's voted clearly there's some interest in it, and if they acquired licenses for minecraft and BTTF (another theme they would not have made) they will probably do it for this as well if they consider it worthy during the reviews.

And maybe it's easier and cheaper to get the license for one set than an entire theme.

OH, the drama. Without any real details of the situation I'll go with what I do know. Her channel is annoying. Her opinions are her own, which do not reach a depth to my liking. Weaponizing a following community against someone else, without illiciting full proof of the matter is rash, and a bit childish.

I'll trust TLG on this one. IF her acct comes back up, then there's the answer. If it doesnt, then there's the statement in which TLG makes by banning for TOS.

Either way, it further dashes hopes that CUUSOO will be a viable platform for fan made products. If the allegations are true, then anyone is susceptible to being banned. If they are false, then anyone is susceptible to an illegitimately formed internet lynch mob.

    Everyone loses

^ Which is the problem with cuusoo.

Cuusoo has been set up so that projects with armies of fans succeed (if succeed means get to review), and is not dependent on the quality of the submission. So cuusoo actively wants people to have large fan bases when they submit projects. This is exactly what brickqueen has. By publicising her project on her youtube channel she gets all her fans to vote for her submission. By getting other popular youtube channels to promote her submission, then she gets a double whammy. In this, she has done nothing wrong. In fact, she has done right. She has got her army (who I suppose are 10 year old boys who love watching a woman getting on for their mother's age dressed up in a Princess Leia bikini) to swing behind her project.

It is when that army starts to attack other people's work calling it copycat and causing trouble. Who is responsible? Her? No. Will it affect her? Yes.

I also find it a little strange that brickshowtv were so positive about her JP model. They think it is "great looking", and she did a "really nice job designing these". I wonder why they support it so strongly? It is far from the best JP model out there. So just to get more subscribers to their channel? If they describe anything as great looking, you know what their standard is.

Someone made a comment in the bashing posts of the new JP project last night... I don't know if it's still there or not as many were deleted, but it went something like: Using the the poor woman angle for sympathy from the males is silly considering that they only have their fanbase because they are a woman, if this person's name was BrickKing, none of this would even be a discussion.... Or something like that.

I couldnt finish the video, because her Lego room was in disarray. My categorical OCD turned over in its grave. If she was wronged by an assclown army, TLG will right things.

Otherwise, it's all fog of words that do not much of anything.

As I outlined elsewhere in this forum a few days ago, I doubt TLG will be getting a license for just one set. They will aim for all or nothing. They don't want to make a successful set only to have M***B***** come along and do the rest of the line.

@Crowkillers I take issue with "considering that they only have their fanbase because they are a woman", not sure how that is ambiguous. I think such statements are worthy of drama and have no place in a community where diversity is valued.

This discussion doesn't seem to be very constructive any more though so I will try to avoid it :)

I have just wasted far too much of my time reading all of these and related content. I agree, this is way too much drama for this supposed to be enjoyable hobby, where I can escape from the stress and cares of the world at large and enjoy snapping little plastic bricks together to make a perfect world of my imagination. I feel for BrickQueen but at this point I have better things to do than read more on this drama. LEGO is supposed to be fun!

i've been saying this from the beginning. But of course this model assumes Cuusoo is geared towards AFOLs, which clearly in retrospect it really isn't. LEGO is using Cuusoo as a way to draw in new fans, not as a way to produce models for existing fans. Nothing wrong with that approach from a business standpoint of course, but it's not what I was thinking (and hoping) Cuusoo was going to be about.

Yes, just to be brief - it not anything anyone has said. The conversation here has largely been quite civil and balanced - as it invariably is on brickset (why this forum is so good). It's the subject matter, the melodrama, the threats. The whole subject is just a terrible mess that drags us all down with it.

Like watching a fight in the street... stand and watch too long, and we all get pointed at by innocent passers by.
