In case it hasn't already been posted - this is from TLG...

TRU US has secured a deal that gave them a portion of the 41999 to sell as part of the LEGO Technic Marketing efforts.
That's funny. Quite the marketing plan. Let's go after the Sunday 1AM crowd. :-) Or, is it Monday 1AM? (No offense to those that snagged one in the wee hours. Now I wish I were a night owl!)

Well Normally TRU has been posting sales like BOGOs at 6-7am on a Sunday, but apparently this listing went live, with the 15% off feature, at 12 am apparently (or the item went live at 12am and the coupon went live at 6-7am)
  • cloaked7cloaked7 Member Posts: 1,448
^12am, 6am.... he he Not much diff to me. Of those few who snagged one at 15% off, they will have a good story to tell. Will rival any fishing story where the fisherman snagged the big one. :-)

The soundwave is fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone that is a fan of transformers. Easily the best that has been done right up there with Grimlock. Wish TRU had a better system in place though as far as preorders and actually meeting demand for them.

^Can you please give a Top 5? Noob to the max here.

I think I am a noob squared.... Silly me, I don't even know what a 'soundwave' is. Well, other than within the context of science and sonic booms. :-) Oh, and I've 'heard' it's an Android app. But, whata I know? Pretty much nothing.

^^ Would appreciate a link to that soundwave as well, since searching for "soundwave" on the TRU site brings up no results for me :(.

There have only been a handful of the Masterpiece Transformers. Optimus is one of my favorites just because. They have done Grimlock, Rodimus Prime, Megatron, Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp and a few others. Usually done in Japan first (and typically a higher quality) and often rereleased by Hasbro in the US as a TRU exclusive. The cool thing about them to me is that they are done old school design wise, but using current technology so they are super articulated. Just google masterpiece edition transformers. You will see many examples.

My favs so far are Grimlock, Soundwave and Starscream. Though Optimus is the only one I have out and routinely pose randomly on my desk :)

Soundwave looks nice, thanks for the pics. He was always one of the coolest Transformers, he knew what was going on, if only Megatron would listen to him.

$120 sounds painful, but it does look like a complete set. Is it metal, like the original Transformers, or lousy plastic? If metal, then that is a bargain.
  • cloaked7cloaked7 Member Posts: 1,448
@LegoFanTexas Banana! Awesome avatar. I love the minions! Love the short films as much as the main attraction. I see Steve, Dave, Tim, Bob. A bunch of them!

Wish I had used it first. Shoot, who am I kidding. I can't get rid of Plankton!

My order still hasn't updated so I'm not sure it's going through. It shows located in stock, so why doesn't it move to shipped?
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
@LFT I want to say they're metal from how it looked in the display case at the Con. Looks a lot like original Soundwave that I had as a kid. But the cassettes look much more intricate this time around (Rumbler, Ravage, Laserbeak, etc). Not sure if its the same size as old or slightly bigger.

@pharmjod I didn't realize they had a Masterpiece Optimus Prime too! Too much good stuff will kill me...

I had the chance to buy a Grimlock one a few years ago and passed.. I really wish that I jumped on it when I had the chance... :(

Stopped by my TRU today, it has 3 LEGO aisles and the full Technic line but no #41999.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
^ Stopped by one out of curiosity today. They had four row separate rows of Lego, three or four end caps, and the whole front display in the store. All hugely marked.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
My status just changed to ship, with a tracking number.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
Received my #41999 today. As usual the outer box was somewhat roughed up, but miraculously the set was about as close to pristine as you can get. The box really is top notch. It almost makes me wish LEGO did all of it's high end sets with a box like this. I wonder what the actual cost increase would be for the quality bump.

As for the Masterpiece Transformers, they have some metal in them. The original Masterpiece Optimus has a lot of metal, but the newer one that came out last year (with the trailer) is more plastic. The Soundwave is more plastic. Metal would be nice, but not a must. The biggest difference between these and the originals though is how articulated they are. It is unreal the amount of poses you can do with the newer figures. Also, by comparison, if you wanted the import Soundwave with all of his cassettes, I think it would cost you something like $300 or more (because you have to buy his cassettes separately). The TRU one comes with all of the cassettes and is MSRP of $119.99. Even at a mark up on eBay, it tends to be a better value over the import, though I have heard the import is a better quality. I can't comment though because I've not seen the two side by side.

By "Technic Marketing plan", they mean the exclusivity of the Technic line that Toys R Us procured. An allotment of 41999 was probably offered to TRU as soon as the plans to produce them were confirmed.

Your point is still valid, of course. TRU could have been a lot more clever in promoting and capitalizing on the popularity of the set like they did with the Yoda Chronicles promotion where they gave away the "NY I <3" Yoda only with the purchase of a marked up X-Wing. I think there's a pretty good chance they had no idea of 41999's popularity, and the webmaster just set the product to go live at midnight and went home.

@pharmjod...Damn you man...after looking at the Soundwave pics I just had to get one. Slippery sloap indeed.

You won't regret it. Those figs, somewhat like LEGO hold value even if opened and played with. If kept in good condition you could probably get out of it what you paid in a year. Regardless, that's why I try to buy two of any masterpiece figure I want now. Sell one to make me feel less bad about keeping the other. I only got one Grimlock, but he is one of my favorites from childhood. He's exactly the same as the one I used to have, only bigger and better. So sentimentality has a little play in my decisions with that one. Will try to get another soundwave for the same reason.

Got mine today. Nice perfect minty box. The corners don't even show any wear.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
Mine came too. Little bit of wear on an edge but ok otherwise. Do you know what are you going to do with yours?

Honestly, I think I will sell it. This was one of those "ok, I can't pass this up" things. I didn't get one from Lego.com and it didn't bother me. Then I read all the hype and all of a sudden the "41999 is now available on TRU.com" post came up and I bit. With this and the Café Corner/50 pound lot I just bought, I am officially broke.

I don't know tho. I'm not putting it up right away even tho it would be any easy double profit.

  • FatMattFatMatt Member Posts: 502
^I take it you bought that lot on ebay for $500 + $175 shipping with the beat up Café Corner box? I was tempted to jump on it.

That was it. I got him down to $80 for the shipping and he also had more containers and boxed sets then pictured.

^It was quite tempting, but at that price he was asking, it was a gamble as to whether Café Corner is in there or not. $10/lb is more than I like to pay, but if you did score a Café Corner, you basically got the other 50 lbs for free.

For those interested in Soundwave, TRU has them available for pick up at certain stores. Check their site if they are in stock at your area. 25% of the So Cal stores are in stock as of this moment...
  • bri4jennbri4jenn Member Posts: 96
Thanks @vwong19. I was able to get one Soundwave for pickup. Do you know of any online TRU coupon codes?
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
I'm in Redondo Beach and a quick search shows closest TRU with stock is Newhall (?) and Ontario Mills. Not reasonably close :T
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
I don't know of any coupons. I didn't see anywhere to enter a code either. Just happy to finally own it. I hope this doesn't start another expensive hobbit.
  • PoochyPoochy Member Posts: 479
@BrickDancer Even Ontario shows OOS for me now :(. Nearest available is at Upland or Fontana (both 30 miles away).

30 miles is nothing in order to get hold of one of these at rrp these days. How about I start the engine for you? :-)

You can't always go by that.. It says the everyone of the Toys R Us in my range is sold out and I was just up at my local one and they have 2 Soundwaves and 4 Acid Storms in stock..

Your best bet is just to go and check...
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^Lucky duck! They only had 1 though? I was heading down to SD tonight and was hoping to score, but even you had to leave the hood to find one. So does not look bueno for me this round =(

^You're talking about a Crawler right? All this talk about childish toys has got me confused.
  • vwong19vwong19 Member Posts: 1,191
As far as Crawlers were concerned I sort of scanned the Lego section at the remote chance of seeing a stray but there was no sign of them.

It sounded like the TRU in Mission Viejo had 5+ because I bought 2 but the clerk said they sold 3 earlier. There is a limit of 1, but they allow you to buy one through pick up and at the store if they are available. I don't know if they had more in the back.

Also they were selling series 10 packs still.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
I can concur about the online store availability being not worth much. I was looking at 4 acid storm transformers in store and online showed nothing in stock. Around here apparently there are people waiting in the morning of truck day specifically to get the Soundwave figure.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
Just as a curiosity, anyone else see that #41999 is now priced at $229.99 on TRU's site? I'm sure they are just trying to jack the price on the handful that will be shipped to stores.
