Was going to use "one Ring to rule them all" but I liked the words 'darkness' and 'bind' which to me resonated with TLG's secrecy and finally bringing a Games part into System. Pretentious, moi? ;o)
The original title was going to be "if you liked it then you should have put a hole in it", but that was a tad long :O)
For example, I might make a post mentioning the color 191 Flame Yellowish Orange (Bricklink's Bright Light Orange, known as "Keetorange" among BIONICLE fans), and include the number and the parenthetical clause on the first instance, then use just the name Flame Yellowish Orange by itself on future instances.
Still, it is helpful that towards the beginning of any segment discussing a color, you DO list two or more names for that color, and I understand that you're probably just choosing among those names and using the one that makes the most sense to you personally. That's perfectly acceptable, and probably doesn't bother most people as long as your pictures and descriptions make it clear just what color you're referring to. It just sometimes feels a bit weird to me to see terms like "Trans-Clear" (a definite Bricklink term, versus TLG's "Transparent" or Peeron's "Clear") on one post, then scroll down to see the same post using a fusion term like "Trans-Brown" and an earlier post using TLG's term "Dark Stone Grey".
On a side note, if you ever need help knowing what Bricklink names are equivalent to which of TLG's names, I have a spreadsheet here that I've been working on for some time. It is not the most detailed (for instance, it doesn't have timeline placement for the various colors) and it is a constant work-in-progress (there are several colors which I KNOW exist from seeing them on official TLG color palettes, though I don't know which parts or sets used them).
Ideally, I'd like to one day create a blog like yours talking about individual colors, their various names, their histories, the colors they are often confused with, etc. But of course, that probably doesn't make as much sense as a blog about new elements, because I am often learning things about older LEGO colors when I least expect it. Take this, for instance. I only recently discovered that the color 156 Transparent Deep Blue had EVER been used for System parts (I only knew of it being used for LEGO watches), and not owning the set that included this part, I couldn't verify on my own that it was a distinct color from 40 Transparent Blue (Bricklink's Trans-Dark Blue). Suddenly, Transparent Blue is only one of two colors Bricklink calls Trans-Dark Blue, and it throws the true color of certain other parts carrying that Bricklink name into question.
Ehhh... apologies for rambling. Loving this blog and looking forward to future updates.
You've surmised me absolutely correctly... I've put *some* thought into colour names but not been consistent and have been happy just using my personal favourite. Thanks for pulling me up on the 'trans-fusion' names though, that one I genuinely hadn't realised I was doing!
My original intent was to use TLG names with BL in parenthesis at the first mention. Quickly realised the issues there, and the main thing that stopped me from doing that was the hideous, utter confusion around the basic colours. Couldn't bring myself to constantly refer to 'green' as Dark Green, knowing that even if I explained it at first mention, or indeed even every mention, it would still cause constant confusion for many readers. And probably me too!
So that showstopper left me dropping colour naming into the 'too hard' basket - for the time being. I have more brainspace as of this week so your comment (plus the fact I have some posts specifically about new/returning colours languishing in the draft folder) has inspired me to move it from 'too hard' to 'to do' ;O) I will definitely attend to fixing the fusion names sooner though.
Thanks so much for sharing your spreadsheet. Huge help. I assume green highlights indicate the current palette? Where have you taken your RGB and Hex values from?
That UV shot is a corker! WANT.
My natural inclination would have been to go with the 'Official' LEGO colours, but like @caperberry I can't bring myself to describe 'green' as 'dark green' (ridiculous), 'light bluish grey' as 'medium stone grey' etc. etc. so I've also ended up with a hybrid colour naming convention on my site which I hope at least reflects common sense if nothing else.
Definitely a blog posting in there, though, and it'd probably fit better on your site than mine Tim so hopefully you'll do one !
Surely we can both post about it though :O)
Aren't you on holiday Lee? Get back to the beach.
What goes wrong? Does nothing happen when you submit, or something else like getting no emails? What browser do you use, and are you Mac/PC?
(Note you can also subscribe by following on Twitter or FB, if you use those. Plus you get little extra tweets or posts about smaller things of interest that I don't write full posts about!)
I can also confirm all of my Friends sets with round tiles also have the X.
Just looked up my stats - 20% of visitors use Firefox :O(
Like I said earlier, I have been having a few problems with the latest version of Firefox, and when I Google my issues, it seems I am not the only one. I would think that most people who are interested will just bookmark and visit regularly anywayso hopefully it will not affect traffic to your site too much. Glad I was finally able to subscribe to your blog, I will definitely be regular visitor, and when I do go back to work, I will test the problem on my Windows 8/FF machine, in case it is something in my settings.
I had Tipper Truck. My sister had Snack Bar and I coveted it. Homemaker are my current eBay obsession.
I love the snack bar set - it is still built in my lego room, and I would love to get the similar ice cream stand #6601-1 to go with it.
I still have my Tipper Truck too!
@flowerpotgirl - if your other half can perfect the stickers then I'd be very interested in getting hold of some - please let me know !

I love the set (#367) featured in the second post - gorgeous !
I'll never forget the day my sister threw the model into the hallway in a fit of rage. She's forgiven, I suppose.
Despite being in terrible condition I brought the box back with me from Australia earlier this year. Mum wanted rid and I couldn't bear to sell or destroy it.
Also of note, Astrid speaks of "Dark Blue" arches in the new Winter Village Market designer video rather than "Earth Blue" which TLG uses to designate the color.
If you use Facebook or Twitter regularly, I would recommend to Like/Follow there instead, as a human being (that's me) sends notifications of new posts. Plus other weeny tidbits that are too small to write posts about.
I can't imagine Huw will be attempting to overcome these naming challenges with an automated script, as he'd need to code exceptions e.g. when BL lumps two different colours into one name.
Green highlights were, at one time, "what's available on the default LDD color palette." I've updated it as the LDD color palette has been updated. None of those colors should be discontinued except for 208 Light Stone Grey (Bricklink's Very Light Bluish Gray) and 294 Phosphorescent Green (Bricklink's Glow In Dark Opaque or Glow In Dark Trans depending on the material of the part in question). But there are some colors not highlighted on that first sheet which are still in use (for example, 298 Cool Silver, Drum Lacquered, Bricklink's Metallic Silver), and some omitted from that first sheet entirely because they are not given any definitions on LDD. The reason the spreadsheet is titled "LDD Color Chart Values" is because that's where it got its start — I added the other sheets, and additional color info, later. The issue with that is that Bricklink's color chart and the LEGO color chart do not and can not have an exact 1:1 relationship. There are some Bricklink colors that correspond to more than one official LEGO color (Bricklink's "Copper" includes at least four different copper colors). Some LEGO colors also correspond to more than one Bricklink color (for instance, 131 Silver can be Flat Silver, Metallic Silver, or Pearl Light Gray on Bricklink depending on what material the part is cast in and how concerned the person making the inventories were with accuracy).
Some Bricklink colors do not actually EXIST in TLG's database — for instance, until just a few years ago, all chrome parts were identified with their base color and a note about their surface treatment, so there isn't in fact any official name or number for Bricklink's Chrome Blue — parts in that color are just identified as 102 Medium Blue with a name and design ID specific to a chrome blue surface treatment. And some LEGO colors do not have any Bricklink names — for instance, 144 Army Green was never used outside of extended-line items like the LEGO watches.
Just take a look at Sheet 2 of that Excel spreadsheet I posted earlier and you'll see what I mean. It's hardly just a matter of plugging the LEGO name into a filter and coming out with a corresponding Bricklink name. I saw this on LDD in the latest update and didn't realize it was already appearing in sets! If anyone's interested, Superkalle from Eurobricks created an LXF file of the new parts and attached it to this post. Some of the parts are new parts this year, some are older parts that are just now being added to the program, and at least one — 14301 — does not seem to be a component in sets from 2013 or earlier!
Note that not only has TLG recently moved from four to five digits as their standard for set numbers, they've also apparently recently reached the end of available five-digit Design IDs and have gone back to fill in ones they didn't use yet. As such, many of the newest Design IDs are five-digit numbers starting with 1, instead of five-digit numbers starting with 8 or 9 like we'd been getting for the last few years.
Wonder how long it'll be before they have to start using six-digit Design IDs! If they do, I hope it doesn't create confusion, since TLG has already used six-digit Element IDs for many parts (back in the olden days when the Element ID was just a two-digit color ID appended to the end of a four-digit Design ID).
Glad the notification worked.
Do you have the Hobbit game #3920? If yes, the picture tiles 2x2 are those new elements? The underside of those tiles are different from regular 2x2 tiles.
Same problem in same model with 3x3 tiles too (but luckily the two used were hidden)! There are some parts that deserve to be made in many of the basic, staple colours I think. One thing I'd like to see is a little colour diversity in potentially useful new parts imho. But I give TLG time :-)
That's if you're talking about the wonderful 2x2 Inverted Tile of course :-)
I am sad that one colour the beautiful 2x2 inverted probably won't appear in soon, or horror of horrors potentially ever, is light bley. Once a part appears in one shade of grey, that tends to get used rather than going to the expense of creating the other shade. Hope I'm wrong though!
