I got 2 of them right before the site started having issues...

Excellent. Glad to see it was released a tad early so that the Hot Dog Cart set could be included instead of the Galaxy Squad one.

Not sure if I got a hotdog cart in my cart actually... I think I only got the Crawler and I did order at 10:30 CDT.
Of course I put my order in but I have yet to see an order confirmation email or a record of it on their site, so Im kinda wondering if I should order another one just to ensure that LEGO.com does not short change me
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
Ahh, never mind, received my order confirmation which has the hotdog cart included as well.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
I just received a confirmation email on my order - with the Hot Dog Cart included in the order.
  • ColoradoBricksColoradoBricks Member Posts: 1,659
2 sets in high demand released the same night... site was not that bad during the 50% off B-Wing.

Actually, I would have rather not having the hot dog cart, if history repeats it self it usually damages the larger box. The the top/cover of the #41999 does crease easily.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
LEGO need to drop a couple million dollars and get their order system upgraded. Seriously archaic. Can't handle the load. Takes 30 min+ to get the confirmation email. My account doesn't show my order and the search can't find it. In this day those type of problems are not excusable from a Billion dollar company.

I finally got my 2 email confirmations...

    Very good point...

^^^Yeah this happens every time a big promo happens or new stock is available. I am pretty upset I can't access VIP points or saved address and credit info right now. I went ahead with the order and will just trust I can argue with their customer service to get credited back the shipping costs and any VIP points or promos missing.

this system is absurd for such a major company.

    Exactly, this...

TLG is a $4 Billion USD dollar company that made $1 Billion USD in profit last year.

There is exactly zero excuse for them to have such a lousy backend to their web site in 2013. None, it is embarrassing and someone should be responsible for it.

Maybe the one who is responsible is the same one who did the proof reading for the printing on the Back to the Future set...

^ If it is anything like where I work even after two big f-ups like that it would be hard to get rid of poor/under-performers.
  • BastaBasta Member Posts: 1,259
Great Scott, this set is actually about $3 cheaper in Australia then the US and $16 cheaper then the UK price with current exchange rates. That would have to be a first, especially for a large exclusive.

This could ...unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe.

I think for the average person getting a message that says "you should be expecting an email shortly" and getting that email within the hour serves them just fine. Lego is trying to cater to the masses and not just a group of people on some Lego forums.

I'll be willing to give them a second chance.

Amazon.com sets the standard for speed and reliablity of a retail web site.

Order e-mails arrive often in seconds, never longer than 1 minute. Order information is in real time on their web site, shipping information is updated very quickly and offers real time updates.

I get that small mom and pop shops may not be able to do all that, but TLG has no excuse what-so-ever...
  • LootefiskLootefisk Member Posts: 67
The thing is TLG doesn't need to beat Amazon. They just need to beat Mega Blok or whoever else is their competition. Ramping up their website to compete with the likes of amazon would be a waste of resources.

The goal isn't to spend the most on making their website the prettiest and most efficient. TLG's goal should be in maximizing profit. If a $4B company can churn a $1B profit I would say they are doing pretty well.

  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Why should their only goal be profit? They aren't a public company, the owner can do whatever he wants.

If it was my company, I'd be embarrassed about the web site problems. If I'm making a billion a year in profit, I would want the web site fixed.

It is a point of pride, of living up to the motto, "Only the best is good enough".

This thing is out of stock already...
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,629
Well four hours later and I have an 'Order Status' which gave me the free shipping, mini mech, and ice cream stand (ordered a hedgehog too) back. So I won't have to fight to get the $18 shipping charge refunded although my bank still is holding the larger amount. Now I am just worried about the fancy box being ruined with three polys potentially smashed into it.

Literally fell zzzz while waiting for it to come online. Woke up at 6am and found that it is OOS. Site allowed me to put in an order but not sure whether I will be getting 1...

Can't say that I am surprised that it is out of stock already... I called a few friends last night(around 11:45 pm est) and told them if they wanted to order it that they better do so right now and they said they'll do it in the morning...

I wonder how many sets were available for US buyers..?
  • rancorbaitrancorbait Member Posts: 1,842
I don't know about this one, it looks too much like a truck from the early 80s. It will probably be popular with resellers though seeing as how its an exclusive edition set.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
Out of stock will ship in 30 days tends to make me think they are not limiting this set
  • ColoradoBricksColoradoBricks Member Posts: 1,659
It could be that there is a limited edition with 1 to 20K license plates and the rest will all have plate #41999
  • Ladder19JTKLadder19JTK Member Posts: 222
Was able to pick up two sets at my local Lego Brand Store. The CSR was nice enough to give me one hot dog cart and one galaxy squad for each set.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788

Yeah, or maybe they ran 10K out now and are running another 10K at a later date..
My guess is this will be a normal set eventually as I'm guessing resellers are buying multiple copies for sale later and will in turn cause a false demand.
It will be interesting to see how many people get booted from LEGO.com for trying to circumvent the limit 2
  • BrickarmorBrickarmor Member Posts: 1,258
The idea that only the first 20k will have the "Exclusive" plate while the rest will be normal sets makes a lot of sense: collectors/resellers get their trophies while everybody else gets plenty of time to buy the set. Wonder how long before we know for sure.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
^ It wouldn't really make sense as it would kill sales of #9398. Why would someone buy #9398 when they could buy #41999? 250 extra pieces, more power functions, a nicer design, better parts for the same RRP?
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas Member Posts: 8,404
Imagine if they early retire #9398 and replace it with #41999...

What would the future value of each be in such a case?
  • doriansdaddoriansdad Member Posts: 1,337

I don't know if they will retire 9398 but I do know they have sold alot more than 20k 41999 and you can still order it on every shopping site across the globe....obviously the next batch due in 3 weeks won't have the extra unique number plate so it will be interesting to see what the market will be for the unique plates (nowhere near 10179 radar dish but maybe $20?) and how long it will be before they are counterfeited....no points for guessing there will be alot of unhappy campers tearing open their boxes and only finding 41999 printed plates if you ordered much past midnight.
  • ColoradoBricksColoradoBricks Member Posts: 1,659
On the #41999 box, they really highlight the fact it has rare dark blue and silver pieces. As a Technic MOCer, I have a set of each to have multiple of those new motors and joints. I would have considered getting the $137 #9398 from Amazon UK if #41999 was not coming out but it looks like the motor will be available on [email protected] anyway.

That said, I like the look of #41999 much better and the fact there are a few more functions does not hurt. If I had to pick one, it would be it.
  • doriansdaddoriansdad Member Posts: 1,337
The dark blue technic pieces are nice.....going to do the Donkey Kong rivet level with jumpman, pauline and kong in 8 bit.

I would love to know how you know they've sold more than 20k.

Resellers alone would have consumed that many worldwide within minutes. I am guessing they had 5K for the USA and I know there were way more than 1k resellers buying 5-10 and still are. At 20k units TLG would have lost money. But hey maybe they never intended to turn a profit on 41999, maybe this was something special for the technic fans. Maybe TLG is going to cancel all these new orders being placed right now.

  • vitreolumvitreolum Member Posts: 1,406
I doubt it, they clearly advertise it as a 20k limited edition:

"Collect one of only 20,000 models, each with its own unique license plate number."

"And as an extra special detail, each of the 20,000 examples of this exclusive edition model features a unique license plate number, so no two models are the same!"

This does not sound to me as 20k will have limited plates and then they will release it as a normal set.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
I would not be surprised if there are multiple waves of the 20k. Maybe we just saw the first 10K and the rest are "30 days" away.
  • doriansdaddoriansdad Member Posts: 1,337
And buy one of 300,00 models, each with the same number plate 41999.

The problem with that logic though is there is a limit of 2 per person.
Yes yes I know there are ways to circumvent that, HOWEVER LEGO seems very intent on stopping those who try to thwart that limitation, including at the stores from what I have been told.
So again I wonder how many orders will be cancelled in LEGO really is stomping on resellers.
But I would say the limit 2 is one reason why it lasted as long as it did before running out of stock.

  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
But if you are suggesting that the orders they are taking now wont have the special numberplate then they'll get tonnes of returns, probably opened. That's not good business. In fact better to cancel excess orders (they've done it before), maybe offer 10% off #9398.

It'll probably be at least a day before they respond, but I'll ask on the Ambassador forum if sets that are fulfilled by backorder are still part of the limited run.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
    edited August 2013
Yeah either that or check the listing for the set carefully.. Right now it still says:
'• Collect one of only 20,000 models, each with its own unique license plate number'
So I would say as long as you see this in the listing on [email protected] then it still is limited to 20K
Or it is opening up LEGO to a lot of legal headaches if the stop but the listing still says 'limited to 20K'

Either that or people will get notifications reporting there are no more available at this time as limited but they can provide you with a non-limited one or a copy of #9398

While you're in there, see if we get copies of the SDCC minifigs minus the exclusive packaging. Same thing, right? :)

Order history usually shows up immediately and confirmation emails come soon after, so, rather than being typical behavior, what you are describing happens 3-4 times a year for, at most, a couple hours.

So is it excusable for a company that is a manufacturer first, and a retailer a distant second, not to make a permanent investment in infrastructure to handle 10x their standard load for what amounts to ~10 hours a year? I certainly give them a pass.

We've discussed this before, but if you're suggesting LEGO.com should match the standard that Amazon sets, you are being unrealistic. A more fitting indictment would be for a companies such as Walmart, who does ~$9 billion in online sales annually, and doesn't come close to matching Amazon's online ordering and fulfillment system.

LEGO did $4 billion in sales last year, but I'd be surprised if even 10% of that was through shop.LEGO.com. I think it's far more relevant to compare them with their peers -- like-sized manufacturers that have a secondary web retail operation -- such as Mattel and Hasbro. I'm quite sure it would compare favorably.

It is amazing to me that some people are making excuses for LEGO and their 'much in need of an upgrade' ordering system. What if they were manufacturing bricks that had inconsistent colors? Would you be saying - 'well, they aren't Toyota and it's just plastic.'

Either you are a best of breed company that demands high standards across the board or you aren't. As has been stated, LEGO most likely has the money to upgrade their I.T. infrastructure, so just do it. (btw, I am an I.T. professional, so I know what's required. I develop world class, best of breed, applications for a living.) The point about Walmart and Amazon is that they are examples that it can be done, so in my opinion there is no excuse. Period. Either you pride yourself in being the best or you're mediocre. If you're the best you want to be the best in every facet. Your stores, your customer service, your product, your warranty, your software applications.

You know why Disney is so successful? They clean windows before they get dirty. They sweep floors before they need it. Sounds crazy doesn't it? One of Walt's mottos was 'no chipped paint'. That goes back to when it was a kid and saw the carousel from a distance. It was colorful and bright with all the horses and lights. Then, when he got up close he saw chipped paint on the horses and burnt out light bulbs. He told himself that if he ever had a carousel it would not be like that. There would be no chipped paint! He took that and built an empire.

I don't think I've ever had a LEGO order of mine show up in the order history within an hour of ordering and it is usually 10 minutes or more before I get an email. And I've ordered quite a bit at non peak times.

Also, 10x their normal load is still nothing compared to other e-commerce sites which is what makes it ridiculous how bad their site is. Last nights peak load of however many people were trying to order, lets call it 50,000 people in the first hour (which I would highly doubt was that high), is probably the load Amazon could handle and probably does handle every 5-10 minutes. LEGO doesn't need to match amazon but they should be able to handle its normal operation better.

I have the same complaint against Target whose website told me my order was complete but the agent on the phone told me it wasnt scheduled to be complete until 4 days later and they also told me they had no way to know if what I ordered was sent in more than one parcel or not because it only had one tracking number but online it said "4 items sent in 1 shipment".
