:) TLG gave up on that saying some time ago...

Otherwise, the colors being "almost right" and the cracking of bricks would be a non-issue.

I hear you on that. At least they send out replacements quick.

Cheaters? pfff thats rather boring comapred to all these wonderful tv shows:
    Real Housewives of new Jersey
    Real Housewives of Orange county
    Real Housewives of New York
    Keeping up with the Kardashians
    Millionaire Matchmaker

There is so much good stuff on tv these days i find it extremely hard to choose which one to watch
What about Honey Boo Boo, and the scratch n sniff "participation" cards? That didnt make the list? ........dang.......<

I do understand what people mean about the blocky hood, it does need the slope from the original design. However I can understand why they went with the block front as it allows them to add the design for the third film without having too mould a new part. Which I am not sure lego really want to risk on what may be a small selling set.

This makes sense to me and I actually really like the third version. Maybe this is one of those Lego sets that look and feel a lot better when built - I often feel quite underwhelmed by box art, compared to a final build... Perhaps that's just me ?!?! I think I'll take a risk on it at the price point.

A must buy for any BTTF fan though.

    FBTB has a written review!

I just need a good instruction scan. Anyone? :)

Oh! Was it pulled for being the most negative review known to mankind? Or did they just post too early

Tried to grab the cached version from Google. It does appear to be there but on my phone.

I read the cache version, I don't know if it can be posted here, but it is very negative.

Ah and political censorship of media takes its toll. fbtb afraid to tarnish some reputation with LEGO?

^ Too early to publish I'd suggest.

^^ It's BTTF. No fan should give a damn. I'm not into figs, not in the slightest, but even I love these Marty and Doc. Best ever! I need extra to turn into keyrings.

Lying in bed at 01:35 wondering whether it's too late to get up and start watching the trilogy? Or would it be too early to get up? Either way, tempting. Some here can vouch for my love for the films.

I'm sure it was due to some embargo on review publication timing, as opposed to censorship. If Lego will be demanding that all negative reviews be pulled, we won't ever see a review :)
  • caperberrycaperberry LondonMember Posts: 2,226
There was an embargo until today, but may be a specific time so maybe they pulled it after realising that. Unlikely I know but on that basis, I'd recommend not posting it here.

I'd also recommend not posting it because as you say it is so negative. If it adds anything to the existing moaning, it's just more new moaning. Clearly a disappointing set, but geez there are limits...

See, having read it (a distraction from the work i should be doing) I didn't see it as being that negative - or at least unnecessarily negative. Aside from the moan about the LEGO date which seemed well over-the-top (I think its pretty cool actually) the negative points seemed well reasoned (and what we expect) whilst they also mentioned a lot of positives - the rear of the car, the minifigs, the printed parts, the packaging. The 'moan' about the fragility of the car struck me - much of the dislike and at least the major uglification (a new word?) has seemingly been due to TLGs desire to make a play set with three different versions, but if said play set is so fragile as to be unplayable, what was the point?

As has been suggested, I suspect its more about timing than anything else. Actually, I'm rather impressed that a site that gets sent free lego to review would be honest with their review rather than toning it down to appease TLG and ensure future free sets.

Negativity for the sake of negativity is rubbish, but equally so is unnecessary sucking up to TLG. Its very rare for LEGO to make a dog, even where its suspected it often turns out better, but if they mess up its reasonable to say so.

...Aside from the moan about the LEGO date which seemed well over-the-top

Precisely the point at which I gave up reading it. Just ridiculous. It's a Lego set ffs
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
^ I agree, that part was childish and silly - almost tantrum like. You should have read on though, that was the last of the negative comments until the summing up - and even that was fairly balanced.

I wonder if it was (self)pulled because of that section - had I written that when read back I might have seen the error of my ways?

  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
^If you mean "if you were one of those people that were offended by my bad opinion, you should stop reading right now." That was in the cached version too. The only change I can see is the posting time - was 4pm now 6pm.

Absolutely reasonable and I hate vanilla reviews, but that was such a rantfest, although admittedly it may have become more balanced after I stopped reading!

So much pleasure has been taken out of this set for me, even before today, I guess I hoped FBTB would be more diplomatic in their criticism, out of respect to the audience rather than TLG. To be fair they did warn me in that opening paragraph before fanning the flames. Just a shame they had to be the first official review...like they just couldn't wait to be first to say its officially crap.

Ha! The irony. I expected some balance but the rant just went on and on and as you say got a tad...precious. I think I'll get precious now and not go back to read the rest ;0)

The crazy thing is I'll still get it - from what I've seen of it I even agree with the criticisms, but its BTTF so I have to get it. Given that, I'm glad that I know what to expect - if I didn't I think there's a very good chance I'd be disappointed. Now I can get it knowing what to expect but enjoy it for what it is - a base on which to try to build a better version? and a couple of nice (essential) minifigs.

In all seriousness there could be a lot of disappointed people out there - it really doens't look good to me from the side or front.

Agreed, our expectations have been well and truly decimated. I'm buyng it as I love those films so much and I love Lego so much. Just irritated I'll probably spend the whole build thinking "oh yes that criticism is true/not true" instead of just enjoying or not enjoying it on my own! ;0)

I imagine all sites' reviews including Brickset's will be negative to a degree; and fair nuff it seems. Just querying how tactful FBTB have been in this instance.

While probably not "the" factor to buy the set, I think I read that the creator is going to give his share of the sales to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Is it possible the car looks so unlike a DeLorean because doing so would have required a license LEGO couldn't, or didn't want to, acquire?
  • LegoFanTexasLegoFanTexas TexasMember Posts: 8,404
The company that owns the current rights to the car is actually based right here in Texas.

Given that they are a small company, I doubt it would cost all that much to get a deal done with them, and it is quite possible they already did. The rights to the DMC logo and the name "DeLorean".

    http://delorean.com/

BTW, starting at just $57,500, they will build you a brand new 1981 DMC DeLorean. They have the huge leftover parts stock and have been building "new" cars for a few years now. A few of the parts ran out awhile back, but they have the full set of plans and have reproduced those few parts, but the big stuff, engines, transmissions, body panels, they have original 1981 parts.

    Crazy, huh? :)

The cost to have a decent BTTF car done professionally is over $100,000, including the cost of the car itself.

Expensive, but fun... :) The sad thing is that to do the car exactly as done in the movie, you have to drill into the stainless steel body panels, which of course are irreplaceable. Most BTTF car makers take other routes to avoid drilling.

I hit up fbtb.net for news (they sometimes seem ahead of brickset on news items) but I have to restrain myself from reading reviews. Obviously they're LEGO fans, but the general negativity and nitpickiness of their reviews makes me wonder...

If the price of $35 is accurate, and it translates into $50 canadian, I will pick it up. I love Back to the Future, it's a fun looking set even if it's not perfect (I would like some kind of transparent windshield), and it's a good conversation piece. I have a soft spot for BTTFIII; won't be surprised if I leave it in "western" mode.

What version of the Time Machine is your favorite? Much as I love "Where we're going, we don't need roads," the look of part II's fusion reactor is my least favorite. Still cool, but I like the slickness of the original and I love the steampunk vibe of III.

That FBTB review is terrible. Not just because he's so negative, but because he doesn't say what the build is like, or what the parts are like. He just launches straight into why he hates it. I could do a better review than that.

My favorite is 2... mostly because I want a flying car already... :)

It is a common joke when my wife and I are driving around in traffic... "where is our flying DeLorean when we need it?"
