Is this a new shark?

icey117icey117 Member Posts: 510
I just studied the new Coast Guard theme, and start to wonder. This white shark... doesn't it look different? It seems to me to be a larger version.

Compare the shark from Set 60013 Coast Guard Helicopter with these regular sharks from Set 60014 Coast Guard Patrol.

What do you think?

They look to be about the same size but they do have a difference. The White Shark has gills on the side where as I don't see any on the gray ones.

The flippers and tail look slightly different too.

Definitely a new shark, at least in this theme and regard. Even the front nose piece is updated. Light years ahead of my beloved and classical Pirates sharks...

Take flight in the Coast Guard Helicopter and search the sea for the stranded sailor! Find his broken down catamaran sailboat with a falling sail function before the great white shark does!
TLG seems to think it's a different shark. Just got added to my list of stuff to buy to get my exclusive store stuff this weekend at the 100th Lego Store Grand Opening in Westchester =-)

There is definitely a new mould, both the head and the body. I picked up a #60011 last week and my kids got two or three older sharks out to chase the surfer and we quite quickly noticed the difference. This one is almost exactly the same size as the old ones though (so similar maybe to the nature of the owl or dog remould).

I was pondering from the main art if the "great white" in #60013 was the version from #6243, but from the alternate pictures you can see it isn't. Is it white or light bluish grey? The old version never seems to have been done in LBG (other than the body for the sailfish).

Yes. Nice to see an update on the classic mould rather than that previous giant shark monstrosity.

Now an update of the foal/pony would be nice. And some sheep while they're at it.

Shame they didn't bring back the large sharks from 2008 (like the ones in #8633 were) that could swallow minifigs whole. They would have been great in these sets!
Nonetheless, while not a City fan, I'm intrigued and interested in this new shark mould. Definitely one for my 'May Buy' list!

Quickly back on the initial topic, the sharks look like http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=62605pb01c01 in white and without the painting. Not the old one, obviously.

i'm just perpetually disappointed by how few ambulance toys are out there, lego or not. For many years i would challenge my friends to find a single *not fire engine red* ambulance in any toy section we passed through. Actually #4431 played a big part in me becoming an AFOL
  • icey117icey117 Member Posts: 510
So these are all new sharks! :-) Pretty nice! Happy I have some if the old ones too.

But.. The shark from Agents 8633 is the same shark as the Pirates 6243?
  • legoprodslegoprods Member Posts: 445
    I stand corrected.

After searching a bit more, it seems like this shark is identical to the old one.

You will not be able to see it in that picture, as it looks like Lego has photoshopped the whiter shark's picture. Actually, it's a computer generated image that does not show the real shark in the set. Looking at real pictures from this set:

    image

    image
    image
    image

So this shark is not only the same as the old shark:

    image

but it also doesn't have the black gills that appear in this set's image where the shark is computer generated, the ones that everyone was looking at. It's clearly different, it is the old shark.

    Enough sharkiness for today. ;-)

@luckyruss could you take a side by side comparison picture?

Bricklink seems to class them as the same shark, but I think.we can clearly see from the pictures this shouldn't be the case.

If anyone has them 'in hand' or at least the 'new' one and could take a picture, that would solve this.

    I agree with @andhe ... I'm getting bit confused!

Man... wish my dad hadn't thrown our childhood LEGO away. It would be so great to make an EVOLUTION of the LEGO SHARK photo session in this thread now :-)

    Quoting a friend's message:

"Box art and instruction books follow a different design path.
Early in the process, they are separated and developed independently.
Instructions and sets are closely related, like humans and chimps.
Box art diverges early, it's no closer than orangutans."

Not sure if I made myself clear enough, but the pictures on which the shark looks different, are all computer generated images. If you google actual pictures of this set, as the ones I first posted, you'll see that the shark is the same as the old one.

I wouldn't fret, these albino variants rarely survive long enough in the wild to document.

Not true — many of the official product shots that show the new shark are in fact photos (you can tell in the high-res photos. A more accurate statement would be that no out-of-box photos of actual off-the-shelf sets use the new shark. Which means that the new shark exists, but hasn't left Billund.

Yeah, I was disappointed that at least the first batch of Coast Guard sets doesn't have the new shark. The new one is much superior to the old one in a lot of ways. Not only is it slightly more detailed, but it has much more useful connection points. You can compare the new and old shark body molds on LDD in Extended Mode, where the old one's Design ID is 2547 and the new one's Design ID is 14518. You can place the new shark mold directly on a studded surface, whereas the old one required a 1x2 plate in between.

In the very least, the Coast Guard sets do use the new shark nose for both sharks (87587, versus the exaggeratedly-pointy 2548). The new nose was introduced in the recent Harbor subtheme and I find it much better than the old one. Hopefully the new shark body will be joining us before too long.

    still, white shark...
  • legoprodslegoprods Member Posts: 445
    I'm completely confused now...

Someone over at bricklink who has this set in hand is reporting that the shark's body is the same as the old one. I can see clearly from real-life pictures on the internet, as per my first post, that the shark's body is the same as the old one.

So, if I understood @Aanchir 's post correctly, there is actually a new shark body, that may appear later this year, on in further production runs of this particular set, right?

And yes, it's true, the shark in this sets have a new head mold, with the different nose.
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872
So here are a couple of pictures - these are both DBG sharks, new one from #60011 and the other is from #4642. The newer one with the rounder nose is on the right hand side. Hopefully you can see the different shaped nose (even from the average quality photo). The bases are also different, not in formation but on the underside.

Curiouser still, I've dug out some older versions and they actually show a mixture of the two undersides. My camera battery has failed me but once charged I'll post another pic.

A collage of sharks... my first two are the same DBGs (but I've swapped them round, new is leftest edge). The middle three I got from set #6558; the last one is an old dark grey from #6286, and clearly they all have the same nose but the bases are a mixture!

Unfortunately I can't vouch for the true origin of the first old gray from #6558 as I bought the set second hand, so it is very possible it has been substituted at some point, but it is definitely old gray.

So the new head is out in the wild now, and there are two very similar body moulds but evidence suggests both have been around since the colour change in 2003/4

Thanks for the pictures, they are really helpful... and confusing. I guess both moulds coexist now...
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 4,000
So there both is and isn't a new shark? It just depends on whether you actually look at the outside or inside of the box... Should we be calling this Scrohdingers shark?
    legoprodsklatu003
  • legoprodslegoprods Member Posts: 445
No, there probably is a new shark, but it just hasn't made it yet to the market. However, it appeared on LDD and on this pictures.

The other two different shark bottoms (there are actually 4 different ones) are all existing variations of the same part, probably caused by different factories using slightly good condition different molds.

  • legoprodslegoprods Member Posts: 445
More like Dark Bluish Gray, Lego's actual gray.

Since the color change, the gray before is usually called Old Gray, and the new kind of gray called Bluish Gray, for it's slight bluish tone. Hence the book "50 Shades of *Gray*". ;-)

^Just to make it more fun with colors: LEGO's official name for the current gray is "Mid Stone", with "Dark Stone" for the dark gray.

I just picked up the coast guard helicopter set and yes the shark is different to the one on the box, it looks much the same as the old one which was slightly disappointing but the helicopter is mahoosive so more than made up for it.

Anyone know if any of the new coast guard sets can be picked up in the US yet? I think I saw someone say target? I want to check out this new shark and add to my pirate cove moc.

@big_blue_winkey So no gills on the shark? And regular size???

It was going to be regular size regardless — the new shark that had people excited is no different in size than the classic shark, as you can see on LDD.

But yes, at least the first batch of Coast Guard sets uses the classic shark (2547)for all colors. The white one is still "unique" in the sense that the new shark upper jaw introduced a couple years back (87587) has not previously existed in white: only the classic shark upper jaw, which was pointier, did.

Yep much the same but white, wasn't expecting it to be a different size though to be fair, I think the head is different though. Still the set itself is very good though.

Sorry for asking again... but just so I get you right... then the body of the shark in 60013-1: Coast Guard Helicopter is not as protraited (see attachment) but rather the regular shark body (without gills)?

I was pretty proud of my CFOL girl this weekend. Without knowing or reading any forums, or having much of any CITY knowledge...she grabbed me over another aisle to show me what she found.

" There's a new great white shark with gills, Dad! Look at the difference. I love new pieces!" -- Not too shabby for a 9 yo. :P

I guess I'll wait to pick up one. She would be crestfallen if it was a regular old shark in white.

Yes, it's the regular shark body. I wouldn't be surprised if the new shark body shows up in later production runs of the set (kind of like how in Hero Factory, #6201 Toxic Reapa's feet were originally old BIONICLE feet, but were remolded with Hero Factory's sturdier joints in later production runs). But even if this does happen, this would make the Coast Guard sets an unreliable way of getting the new shark. So unless you have interest in the Coast Guard vehicles themselves you may be better off waiting until the new shark shows up consistently in newer sets or becomes available on Bricklink.

LEGO will get complains about this for sure. They'd have to send out new sharks to alot of adult and teen fans. The kids might not care!
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872
I asked about this in store today, and we looked it up on Lego's official parts system. The new shark head has been in production since Jan 12, and the shark body for #60013 only since June 2013 (what I don't know is if this is mould or element - ie colour - specific). However, the box on the shelf was packed at end April 2013, so suspicion was it would contain the old mould. However, I didn't buy the set to check.

    So still schroedingers shark..

I didn't even know they could look that kind of thing up from LEGO stores! Awesome!

So yeah, at least it lets us know that the new shark body IS being produced, and it wasn't a preliminary thing that they decided against for the final set.
  • luckyrussluckyruss Member Posts: 872
^ it was pretty interesting - I think they call it "brickpicker" - it looks really like peeron.

Actually, I would guess this is exactly the system they are using if you ring them up to ask for spare / replacement parts etc.

So can we get a consensus here or a fact finding answer? New shark torso but not head correct?
  • icey117icey117 Member Posts: 510
Well - the one they included in the set is old torso and (semi) new head. BUT a new shark is on its way, - that one we havn't seen yet. Only on the package, where it seems larger than the one that for now is included.

My guess is that something got delayed in the production round of this new shark and LEGO decided to add the smaller white shark instead of the new big. That was Easier than changing the package design or delaying the theme release day. Sending the new shark to complaining customers is way cheaper than the other mentioned alternatives.
  • Big_Blue_WinkyBig_Blue_Winky Member Posts: 181
Looking like I'll have to buy another of these sets at a later date then, when the new shark is released. Damn you Lego! And your crafty ways of getting extra money out of me.

I'll just wait and get one when I can guarantee I have a new one, ie after they've been for sale a while and all old stocks sold up, I've got a few other things I want to purchase first really, like the Cargo plane and Town Square.

Purchased 60013 Coast Guard Helicopter last Wednesday from Lego Store in Annapolis Md. Put the set together tonight and it has a shark body with the gills. Code on the box seals is 22R3, if that helps anyone looking for the new shark.
