I was pondering from the main art if the "great white" in #60013 was the version from #6243, but from the alternate pictures you can see it isn't. Is it white or light bluish grey? The old version never seems to have been done in LBG (other than the body for the sailfish).
Now an update of the foal/pony would be nice. And some sheep while they're at it.
Nonetheless, while not a City fan, I'm intrigued and interested in this new shark mould. Definitely one for my 'May Buy' list!
But.. The shark from Agents 8633 is the same shark as the Pirates 6243?
After searching a bit more, it seems like this shark is identical to the old one.
You will not be able to see it in that picture, as it looks like Lego has photoshopped the whiter shark's picture. Actually, it's a computer generated image that does not show the real shark in the set. Looking at real pictures from this set:
So this shark is not only the same as the old shark:
but it also doesn't have the black gills that appear in this set's image where the shark is computer generated, the ones that everyone was looking at. It's clearly different, it is the old shark.
Enough sharkiness for today. ;-)
Bricklink seems to class them as the same shark, but I think.we can clearly see from the pictures this shouldn't be the case.
If anyone has them 'in hand' or at least the 'new' one and could take a picture, that would solve this.
Man... wish my dad hadn't thrown our childhood LEGO away. It would be so great to make an EVOLUTION of the LEGO SHARK photo session in this thread now :-)
"Box art and instruction books follow a different design path.
Early in the process, they are separated and developed independently.
Instructions and sets are closely related, like humans and chimps.
Box art diverges early, it's no closer than orangutans."
Not sure if I made myself clear enough, but the pictures on which the shark looks different, are all computer generated images. If you google actual pictures of this set, as the ones I first posted, you'll see that the shark is the same as the old one.
Yeah, I was disappointed that at least the first batch of Coast Guard sets doesn't have the new shark. The new one is much superior to the old one in a lot of ways. Not only is it slightly more detailed, but it has much more useful connection points. You can compare the new and old shark body molds on LDD in Extended Mode, where the old one's Design ID is 2547 and the new one's Design ID is 14518. You can place the new shark mold directly on a studded surface, whereas the old one required a 1x2 plate in between.
In the very least, the Coast Guard sets do use the new shark nose for both sharks (87587, versus the exaggeratedly-pointy 2548). The new nose was introduced in the recent Harbor subtheme and I find it much better than the old one. Hopefully the new shark body will be joining us before too long.
Someone over at bricklink who has this set in hand is reporting that the shark's body is the same as the old one. I can see clearly from real-life pictures on the internet, as per my first post, that the shark's body is the same as the old one.
So, if I understood @Aanchir 's post correctly, there is actually a new shark body, that may appear later this year, on in further production runs of this particular set, right?
And yes, it's true, the shark in this sets have a new head mold, with the different nose.
Curiouser still, I've dug out some older versions and they actually show a mixture of the two undersides. My camera battery has failed me but once charged I'll post another pic.
Unfortunately I can't vouch for the true origin of the first old gray from #6558 as I bought the set second hand, so it is very possible it has been substituted at some point, but it is definitely old gray.
So the new head is out in the wild now, and there are two very similar body moulds but evidence suggests both have been around since the colour change in 2003/4
Thanks for the pictures, they are really helpful... and confusing. I guess both moulds coexist now...
The other two different shark bottoms (there are actually 4 different ones) are all existing variations of the same part, probably caused by different factories using slightly good condition different molds.
Since the color change, the gray before is usually called Old Gray, and the new kind of gray called Bluish Gray, for it's slight bluish tone. Hence the book "50 Shades of *Gray*". ;-)
But yes, at least the first batch of Coast Guard sets uses the classic shark (2547)for all colors. The white one is still "unique" in the sense that the new shark upper jaw introduced a couple years back (87587) has not previously existed in white: only the classic shark upper jaw, which was pointier, did.
" There's a new great white shark with gills, Dad! Look at the difference. I love new pieces!" -- Not too shabby for a 9 yo. :P
I guess I'll wait to pick up one. She would be crestfallen if it was a regular old shark in white.
So still schroedingers shark..
So yeah, at least it lets us know that the new shark body IS being produced, and it wasn't a preliminary thing that they decided against for the final set.
Actually, I would guess this is exactly the system they are using if you ring them up to ask for spare / replacement parts etc.
My guess is that something got delayed in the production round of this new shark and LEGO decided to add the smaller white shark instead of the new big. That was Easier than changing the package design or delaying the theme release day. Sending the new shark to complaining customers is way cheaper than the other mentioned alternatives.
