6379 Riding Stable because I grew up on a farm and that was the closest Lego ever did to releasing a farm-themed set until 2009. I still have mine though the box and instructions are gone (lost when my mom did some cleaning when I was a child).

5988 Pharaoh's Forbidden Ruins (why that name isn't listed on Brickset is curious; it's the name that is on the U.S. box) was the set that got me seriously into collecting again though after many years of sporadic purchases.

Wow, I don't have one favorite set. I couldn't even begin to narrow it down that far.

One of the more modern sets that I really enjoy is 10193 Medieval Market Village. That one really got me back into Lego when it came out.

Totally lame, but I love this set:

    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=3179-1

The 3179 repair truck. My favorite sets tend to be the more simple... I also love the camper (7639).

In terms of bigger sets, I love the off road fire truck (7212)... kinda sentimental though... my wife bought that for me b/c it was on sale at target. Also love the 7738 coast guard helicopter...

But I really do think the 3179 is my fav.

Bit of an old/clichéd thread this, but anyway... My favourite is still the 6399 Airport Monorail: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6399-1. I bought a MIB one in 2002 and still love it today (built, of course). Trains are a close second for me. The Metroliner is a classic but 7740 is still my favourite all time train. Being a kid in the early 80's was the best time in LEGO history IMO.

I am 39 and my favorite was and still is the original Yellow Castle 375. Even though as a child had nearly every classic space set between 1978 and 1985, the castle was my favorite. I remember seeing pictures of it in the late '70's when it was only available in Europe. Then, in 1981, JC Penny had it listed in it's Christmas Wish Book. The book came out in July, and I had to wait until Christmas to get it. I still think to this day that the Yellow Castle was the best Christmas gift i received as a kid.

I didn't start collecting until 1999 (as an adult), but based on what I do have, the Death Star (10188) is my favourite. It is just so much fun to actually act out some of the SW scenes (ahem, I don't do that often...), and just to look at in general. Everyone who enters my Lego room is instantly drawn to it. It's just so big! It also provides a fun and interesting subject for macro photography (except getting it dust-free is a nightmare).

A close second is the Medieval Market Village (10193) - it's one of the few non-castle/non-battle Castle-themed sets made, and as such, was somewhat unique. I'm glad to see more 'everyday people' Castle-themed sets being released later this year (like the Mill). MMV has some nice minifigs, and I love the brown cows. I also really like all the details like the furniture, the fruit/fish/flower (FFF) stand, the water wheel, etc. Just a great set!

Funnily enough, that's the same year that I started collecting too. And, by coincidence, that's also the year LEGO Star Wars first came out, if it is indeed a coincidence.....

Anyway, back on topic. My favourite changes all the time and I'd have a hard time picking just one. Though if I HAD to choose one set, it would have to be Set 8088, the ARC-170 fighter. I have loved the look of that ship since I first saw it in the movie.

My fave set is 928/497, the classic 'Galaxy Explorer' ... as can be seen in a Brick Journal from last year :-)
I had Lego when I was very young, mostly inherited from my older brothers & sister. I loved playing with LEGO, but it was the release of 'Classic Space' immediately after the 1st Star Wars film that really fired my imagination and turned me into a LEGO fanatic. I didn't get the 'Galaxy Explore' as a present from my parents until my birthday the year after it came out (I had most of the other 'CS' sets by then), but it has always remained my fave set :-)

boy, is this a tough one.

guess http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6929-1 has to be mentioned, as it's the first set i have clear memories about (i was 4 when i got it).

http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6066-1 has also always been among my favs.

as to what i don't own.. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=10210-1 and http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10193-1 do definitely have an edge on lots of the recent stuff.

Not a coincidence - that's why I started collecting (big SW fan). In fact, I ONLY collected Star Wars until about 2007. I had bought and built all the existing sets (well I'm technically missing a few) and wanted more things to build, so I started branching out, and it got a bit out of hand from there... :)

I thought so. :) I started collecting LEGO because of the Star Wars theme too. (Also a huge Star Wars fan since I was a kid).

I love the large complex technic sets. The engineering involved on these sets just boggles my mind.

One of my favorites is Technic crane 8421. There is slot going on in this set. The base of it is just jam packed full of gears and mechanics.

    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8421-1

Another new favorite is the current excavator set. Technic 8043. this set is the most densely created Lego set I've ever seen. It's also quite difficult (especially replacing the bad pieces with the new replacement pieces. That was a fun challenge). I would recommend this set to any technic fan.
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=8043-1

I haven't built the bulldozer from a couple years ago so I can't comment on that one.

The 1/8 scale cars are fun as well.
  • CrankinCrankin Member Posts: 17
Also the giant castle chess set 852293

    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=852293-1

What's better than a great build that you can actually play with. And it stores itself nicely in the box it came in. I love this set but I'm surprised it's not more popular.

The Fort Legoredo from the Western line in the late 90s... I received a re-release of the set for Christmas, and I remember it fondly as being the first big LEGO set I ever got. I spent hours next to the Christmas tree playing bandits and cowboys and cavalry - good times.

Shuttle Adventure. Because when I was ten I built my own Shuttle/booster/tank MOC and waited 25 years for Lego to bring out one that made me go wow (literally).

I have many favorites, but if there's one set I have to place a very special emphasis on - it would be 6878 Blacktron II Sub Orbital Guardian. While it's not exactly a big set, it IS the set that started me on my collecting and love of space in my younger years. Now that I'm older, I find Blacktron 1 & 2 are still my favorite lines ever and the Guardian still holds it's place as my all time favorite piece, despite the many additions of awesome Space/Star Wars/and others to my collection.

Honorable mentions to the most recent Star Wars AT-AT, Agent 2.0 Aerial Defense Unit and the incredibly sexy Lunar Limo from SPIII :)

My favorite set would be 404. I got it for Christmas in 1978. I don't have it anymore, but I have managed to find 5 complete seys on Ebay. OCD. Running a close second would be 570, I think that is the last Lego set I received as a child.

If I ever get around to building it, maybe the UCS Millennium Falcon?

But I started with Classic Space, and LL918 is a set I am very fond of.

It is simply impossible for me to name one set as my favorite because I like many sets for different reasons. Here are some questions that are easier for me to answer, which following the rationale, might qualify them as my favorite set:

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one set, which would you choose?
    8480 Space Shuttle

What set do you have the fondest memory of?
    588 Police Headquarters

What set do you think you've logged the most play hours with?
    6071 Forestmen's Crossing

What set do you regard as the most beautiful set?
    10185 Green Grocer

If you had to choose one set to give to someone to make them a fan of LEGO, which would you choose?
    6399 Airport Shuttle

And in spite of all those selections, I would probably prefer this set over any of them on any given day:
    6285 Black Seas Barracuda

@rocao Like your headings so Im going to use them too

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one set, which would you choose?
8297 Technics Off-Roader would keep me busy for a nice long time.

What set do you have the fondest memory of?
The MoCs I did as a kid.

What set do you think you've logged the most play hours with?
8297 Technics off-Roader mainly cos its so darn complicated and intriguing to mess with.

What set do you regard as the most beautiful set?
    10217 Diagon Alley

If you had to choose one set to give to someone to make them a fan of LEGO, which would you choose?
6285 Black Seas Barracuda - attractive but simple.

And in spite of all those selections, I would probably prefer this set over any of them on any given day:
    10191: Medieval Market Village

Without a doubt, it would be the 396 Thatcher Perkins Locomotive Set, one of the (surprisingly) unpopular Hobby Sets of the 1970s. It was sold everywhere, except USA and Canada. It's the ONLY Lego set that I have on continuous display at my house, keeping it on a bookshelf.

Great choice of headings, @rocao, so I'll go with them too - I fully endorse your sentiments about how it's hard to choose just one favourite.....

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one set, which would you choose?
10188 Death Star - an interesting, relatively lengthy build, and loads of varied pieces to MOC with afterwards. Maybe you could build a raft to get you home ?

What set do you have the fondest memory of?
    928 Space Cruiser and Moonbase

What set do you think you've logged the most play hours with?
    As above - set 928

What set do you regard as the most beautiful set?
10185 Green Grocer (can't argue with you on that, @rocao)

If you had to choose one set to give to someone to make them a fan of LEGO, which would you choose?
    Set 10184 Town Plan

And in spite of all those selections, I would probably prefer this set over any of them on any given day:
Has to be 10188 Death Star. I love that set !

    @martin: Nice Choice...
I have many for each genre (Warning: I am an 80's guy here- Which I believe is the 'golden' era of Lego)
each one was chosen for my opinion of great playability with one set.

For Space: 928 497 Galaxy Explorer lots to do with the set
For Town: 6399 Monorail, 6390 Main Street and 6383 Public Works Center
    Train: 7730 Electric Good train
    Castle: 6080 King's Castle (from 1984), 6040 Blacksmith shop
Pirate: 6277 Imperial Trading Post, 6276 Eldorado fortress
    Star Wars: 7264 Imperial Inspection

I haven't been collecting for awhile... So I have a few favorites, most of which are more modern. Definitely the latest Hogwarts, as well as the Dwarven Mine in the recent (and better) Castle. So much originality was in that set; I just loved it.

@LuciusMalfoy7 I fully agree with the 7036 Dwarves' Mine. It's the set that brought me out of the 'dark age' and got me collecting again. It's got some fantastically original mechanisms, just a great set. Hopefully I'll be agreeing with you regarding Hogwarts, it's currently finding its way to me!
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
^ My complaint about 7036 was the heavy use of tall slopes and bricks. It would have been so much better if it was made of staggered bricks or even BURPs so that it actually looked like it was cut away from rock as a mine should
  • VithVith Member Posts: 31
I always loved the pirate ships.. Got a Black Seas Barracuda for 130 EUR coming up in May. :]
  • IstokgIstokg Member Posts: 2,363
Rocao.... funny you mention your complaint about the 7036 Dwarven Mine set... in my new Unofficial LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide (Volume 1 & 2 combined on one CD)... in Chapter 13 - LEGO Set/Part Prototypes.... I added over a dozen new prototype items I got from various LEGO sources... and one of them is an image of a prototype for the Dwarven Mine that looks like it has a huge gray and green BURP (or more likely very tall hollow baseplate, that somewhat resembles the Disney Matterhorn ride)... and very much looks like a huge rock that has a mine in it.... TLG obviously went with the tall slopes instead... (I'm taking pre-orders for the collectors guide in my Bricklink Store (Gary Istok Rare Bricks) due out at the end of spring...)
  • IstokgIstokg Member Posts: 2,363
Oh what the heck... here's the prototype for the 7036...

My favorite set has to be 5986 Amazon Ancient Ruins. I was born in 1994 and I got this for my fourth birthday in 1998, I remember my brother and I building it, best part is I still have it!

My favorite set would have to be either the Fire Brigade or the Obi-Wans Jedi Starfighter, this are an all around selection though.

For the best set to play with I'd have to say the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser, and I enjoyed building the Grand Emporium.

The Shuttle Adventure does deserve a mention though @Cortez.

  • paul88paul88 Member Posts: 169
Wow, what an impossible topic :)

I'll be dating myself here, but my fondest memories are of 2 classic space sets:

    6901 Mobile Lab http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6901-1

    and

    6927 All-Terrain Vehicle http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6927-1

I remember getting the mobile lab set in a mall around Christmas, and it was one of my best childhood memories ever. I can't remember the occasion that I received the all terrain vehicle on, but I thought it was SO COOL how the back section detached and became a mini space station :)

I am fascinated with (but not collecting) the 'Western Theme' from the late 90's. This may be because I was huge into the Playmobil Western theme growing up and the LEGO Western was a near mirror image of the best Playmobil sets. I was in my dark ages when LEGO introduced the Western Theme.

I just wish that they would have introduced these earlier... however, I may not have had the collection of Playmobil that I have now if TLG came out with the Western theme earlier.

for me i think that must be http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6349-1

obviously having been a child playing with lego in the late 80s/early 90s.
regarding the lego town theme as pretty much the pinnacle of themes, this one has it all: playability, classic white/red colour design, wonderful base plate (has it been used more than twice? only set's direct predecessor comes to mind), simple but nice architecture with a bedroom even on the top floor. plus i love the trans/black beauty of a car.

    another obvious pick is http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6376-1
    no wonder it was re-released.

hello btw, this is my first post!

If I had to pick just one, it would be the http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6923-1 Particle Ioniser.
Adjustable wings, magnets, a robot and a cargo container. Very "swooshable".
It was one of my favorites when I got it as a kid, just a bit over 21 years ago (it was Easter 1990, I think) and it remains one of my favorites today.

Number one in my Lego universe is the 1980 Technic car chassis - 8860. Great to MOC with, too. I also treasured my 395 Rolls-Royce; one of the 1970s hobby sets. Moving to more modern stuff, the Taj Mahal is pretty spectacular.
