LEGO's "true intentions" - nominations for a classic set 'make over'

edited August 2011 in Everything else LEGO
OK, after the previous question about "what sets do AFOLs like", LEGO have come back & said "actually we meant to ask slightly different question" ... so they've asked the AFOL community to start over with the nominations ...
Dear Ambassadors,

Recently we asked for your help in finding out what are some of your most favorite models of all time. The information you provided us was surprising in how many recent sets were included on the list. That was wonderful to hear, however it didn’t quite provide us with enough suggestions for our true intentions.

The Direct Team is considering refreshing a model which is a LEGO fan favorite from years past. We are not looking to do a LEGO Legend. Instead, we would like to completely rethink a classic model by using today’s building techniques, colors and styling. Imagine it very much like when the Star Wars team revisits classic icons like the X-wing or when the Direct Team revisited Town Plan.

Please keep your choices to sets released in the 1970s, 1980s & 1990s. The sets should include minifigures, be non-IP (No Star Wars, Ferrari, Maersk, etc) and unfortunately not be a monorail or any other train that rides on one rail. If the sets are from the 1970s and did not originally include minifigures, try to imagine that the new version would have minifigures.

Deadline for suggestions is the 29th of August!

Many thanks for your help,

LEGO Direct Team
Their deadline is 29th August; I'll need some time to collate the responses, so please respond here by the end of Saturday 27th August.

Based on this new question, I have no hesitation in nominating the classic 497/928 space ship for this 'make over' ...

http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=928-1 - "Space Cruiser And Moonbase"

I have no hesitation nominating set 6987 Message Intercept Base and 6954 Renegade.
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 4,000
    Interesting indeed!
My nomination would have to be for one of the larger forestmen sets so 6054, 6066 or 6071. So much potential, would love to see a modernised attempt.

That's a tough one, and I'll have to choose more than one. (Am I breaking the rules Ian?...) These sets aren't anything much with all the new sets being churned out (with the possible exception of the last one), but I would love to see reincarnations with them brought bang up to date.
    6543-1: Sail N' Fly Marina
    6391-1: Cargo Center
1592-1: Town Square - Castle Scene
I would have no hesitation in mentioning 6500 too, but since it was never produced.....

Without hesitation, the Imperial Trading Post (6277)

Space- As much as Blacktron is my favorite theme, I would choose:

    6952 - Solar Power Transporter

Modular vehicles that connect to each other, it's hard to go wrong when contained within one set. And although it's shape reminds me of the new Alien Conquest base, I would love to see it as a Blacktron re-visitation or an alien's version of the mobile station ;)

Of course it would be great to tag on some space ships and if the base were expandable but what I like about this set is it can be 1, 2, or even 3 vehicles. If more could be added to it, it would be an ever expanding train but we all know that's what makes modular cool.

Then again any castle or pirate ship would probably make me very happy.

And my vote goes to 6765 (Gold City Junction), with 6769 (Fort Legoredo) as a close second. The whole western theme has some great sets that sometimes are forgotten. http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6765-1

    Truck Stop: 6393
  • BinaryCodeBinaryCode Member Posts: 15
I'd really like to see 6286 Skull's Eye Schooner revisited, just so long as we're talking Imperial Flagship, and not Black Pearl in regards to quality.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
I'm having a tough time narrowing it down. I'd love to see some that have already been mentioned here.

    6765 Gold City Junction
    6769 Fort Legoredo
    1592 Town Square
    6277 Trading Post

    But also:
    396 Thatcher Perkins
    371 Sea Plane
    456 Spirit of St. Louis
    580 Brick Yard

My vote probably goes to the following however, done up MMV/Diagon Alley style:
    365 Wild West

I also nominate the classic spaceship 497/928.
  • TalasAntaresTalasAntares Member Posts: 124
    I'll add my vote for
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=497-1 - "Galaxy Explorer"
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=928-1 - "Space Cruiser And Moonbase"

(shamelessly copy and paste of Ian's links)

Keeping with my vote for Dark Forest Fortress 6079. I'd love to see updates to any of the Forestmen sets (6054, 6066, 6077, 6071).
  • GIR3691GIR3691 Member Posts: 674
    Galaxy Explorer would be cool!
  • dimefielddimefield Member Posts: 314
928 galaxy explorer moon base is still my top choice!
  • Si_UKNZSi_UKNZ Member Posts: 4,179
I'm going to use my vote on 6399 Airport Monorail, to make the point -

Please please please can Lego give us a decent reason why they are excluding Monorail, because every excuse I've ever heard has work-arounds, and 6399 is in my book far and away the best Lego set ever.
  • drdavewatforddrdavewatford Administrator Posts: 6,756
I'm with @Bluemoose - 928 all the way ! They could even bolt it onto the Alien Conquest theme as a Special Edition....

Although honourable mention for 1592 and other Town Square/Town Plan sets, any of which I'd buy like a shot.
  • SutterCaneSutterCane Member Posts: 21
I'm gonna have to go with
    http://brickset.com/detail/?set=6552-1 "Rocky River Retreat"

I just love the idea of a cabin or minifig dwelling surrounded by nature elements. Not just a house with trees around it, but the entire set having a nature theme with the dwelling being incorporated into that; being a part of it. (For anyone who never had this set, the interior of the cabin actually extends into the mountainside with an entire room being located within the hollow of the rocks). I would love to see this concept expanded on.
  • RobbRobb Member Posts: 144
Ok, I'm still going to go with Fabuland. I choose set 134 The Service Station.

I'd like to see Lego reimagine fabufigs as minifigs, and there hasn't been a recent service station anyway, has there?

I know this is a long shot, but I still want Lego to know that there is a strong interest in Fabuland.

    Oh boy, hard one...

I used to own one of these when I was young, and I remember them being awesome:
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=497-1 - Galaxy Explorer
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=928-1 - Space Cruiser And Moonbase

But then I see these sets from the western theme (which I never even knew about, since those were released in my Dark Ages):
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6762-1 - Fort Legoredo
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6765-1 - Gold City Junction
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6766-1 - Rapid River Village

And those are just... incredible. I'd buy updated versions of those in a minute.

Another 6277 Trading post here please, such a great idea for a set I thought.

I would have to nominate set 6970 Beta-1 command base
  • OrthobotrexOrthobotrex Member Posts: 165
I'll go with 497/928 as well, hopefully with sleeker ships and a biosphere-like concept for the base/s.
  • AlHazredAlHazred Member Posts: 14
I will shamelessly copy Ian's links (which were shamelessly copied by TalasAntares):
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=497-1 - "Galaxy Explorer"
http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=928-1 - "Space Cruiser And Moonbase"

    And I'd also add:
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6988-1 - "Alpha Centauri Outpost"
First off, Blacktron! Secondly, it's a snazzy-looking base and I'd love to see them make it even snazzier!
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
I'm going to second one of Matthew's votes: 1592 - Town Square (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=1592-1). A re-imagining of that in an MMV style could be fantastic.
  • sramsram Member Posts: 60
    6769 Fort Legoredo (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6769-1)

Too bad Santa Fe Super Chief was released in 2002, I presume that does not make the cutoff?
  • bri4jennbri4jenn Member Posts: 96
    My votes are for
6390 Main Street (make it a more modular feel)
6383 Public Works Center (got to love a contruction site)
575 Coast Guard Station (Add some more realistic boats and a rescue chopper with a bucket to lower down to the water)
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
It would seem as if the mods are maintaining solidarity (a good thing) or just think alike (perhaps not a good thing): my vote is for 1592 Town Square, as well.

It's not my favorite model of all-time, but I chose it over others because:

    1) the diverse scene offers a lot of room for enhancements
    2) it is on the older end of the minifig scale, and would highlight similarities and techniques of present vs yesteryear
    3) it captures the playful spirit of LEGO
    4) the original model was not widely available
    5) it can appeal to town and castle fans

I second (third?) the Duchessa and Siderdd:
    Wild West/Frontier theme: 365, 6765, 6769
The whole western theme really ought to have a redo, enough time has certainly passed, and sets now can be so much more detailed and sophisticated than in these cases, especially 365. I have said it elsewhere on brickset, but the western theme has a lot of untapped potential.
  • GalactusGalactus Member Posts: 260
Let's see. I'm nowadays missing sets like 4544 Car transport wagon (or even better: 7839 Cars transport depot) for car transport on the tracks, 4549 Container double stack with it's large containers and 7867 Lighting standards. But I don't need to see a redo for any of them, however it would be nice to see new versions return.

4554 Metro station crossed my mind, but then I'd rather see a new metro/subway station. I would love to see a moder version of 6278 Enchanted island, but in the end my vote goes to 6394 Metro park & service tower.
  • brickmattbrickmatt Member Posts: 103
Definitely 6277 Imperial Trading Post, with the western theme running a close second.
  • ClassicsmileyClassicsmiley Member Posts: 78
Stealing PlasticDots' suggestion, I nominate 6970 Beta-1 Command Base.

  • TalasAntaresTalasAntares Member Posts: 124
I'll stick with my previous suggestions, but think the idea of redoing ANY of the "Classic Space" sets from the late 70's and 80's would be great. And as someone previously noted, they could actually be released as part of the "Alien Conquest" theme. Nice!
  • SutterCaneSutterCane Member Posts: 21
I'm really debating changing my vote to the Western theme as well. Seeing something such as Gold City Junction redone in MMV or Town Plan style would just be too awesome. I would love to see that theme reemerge, especially since, as others have already mentioned, there is so much that could be done with it. Heck we could even see a new train set based on the theme.

Outside of an updated Galactic Enforcer, it would appear we are all craving a MMV-type redo on a a community set, whether that be in a Town, the Old West, Pirate times, or Space. Since we already have such great Town/City destinations these days via the modulars and Town Plan, I hope TLG will bypass the popular Town Square and instead give us a great and highly detailed Pirate port, Western town, or Space Base. Otherwise, I'm pulling for my childhood favorite Galactic Enforcer.

    Edit: Galaxy Explorer :o)
  • tsitsi Member Posts: 34
... a completely rethink of the set #1592 (Town Square) would be great!

WOW! You're YOUNG for an Admin, seeing as how Galactic Enforcer is a mere two years old! I thought you had to be 16 to be a mere member, but here we have toddlers administering! :P

I would go for any/all of the following as a classic make-over:
  • YellowcastleYellowcastle Administrator, Moderator Posts: 5,234
^ I, um, meant, uh, the Galaxy Explorer. :o)
  • dillemikkdillemikk Member Posts: 1
    LL928
  • tdhbrtdhbr Member Posts: 188
Another vote for the Galaxy Explorer. That was immediately by thought, even before reading all the other comments.
  • mnbvcmnbvc Member Posts: 143
I would like a detailed port from the Pirates line - something along the lines of a cross of Eldorado Fortress (which was a better build) and the Imperial Trading Post...although I don't mind if it is Pirates or Soldiers.

Otherwise, I'd be a fan of anything Western - particularly Fort Legoredo or the Bandit's Secret Hideout...a Western goldmine would be excellent.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
I'd gladly change my vote to Galaxy Explorer if I knew we were to get an entire line of Western themed sets.
  • jwsmartjwsmart Member Posts: 298
I'll have to nominate the Blacktron Renegade (http://brickset.com/detail/?set=6954-1) as well. It's a wonderful looking modular, asymmetric ship. It's a very studs-up construction, and we haven't had a non-licensed asymmetric space ship since the Renegade, it would be a perfect candidate for a remake. Although if you're doing that, you might as well remake the Invader as well, so that we can interchange the modular parts...
  • TalasAntaresTalasAntares Member Posts: 124
    ^^ that's a beautiful ship!
  • dodgedodge Member Posts: 14
Thinking of sets that I've got, the first one that popped into my mind was "Star Fleet Voyager" 6929 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6929-1

I would imagine it a bit thicker around the edges and much sleeker as well.

Whatever happens with this idea, kudos to LEGO for putting the question out there!
  • StuBoyStuBoy Member Posts: 623
Imperial Trading Post for sure. Would love to see the merchant ship done with modern parts and techniques. 2nd would be 6066 Camouflaged Outpost, but that's a smaller sized set, so any of the larger Forestmen sets would be great to see re-done.
  • TervlonTervlon Member Posts: 23
6066 Camouflaged Outpost is one of my all time faves. But I will also add to the chorus calling for anything Wild West or the LL928. All would be great choices, but Forestmen would be truly nostalgic for me.
  • wagnerml2wagnerml2 Member Posts: 1,376
375 Yellow Castle is always my favorite, but might not be that great to make over. I will add my vote for the Galaxy Explorer as well with this caveat and challenge, lets make it the same style of "brick built" incorporating new tecniques (SNOT and the like) nad avoid a tremendous amount of new molds and pieces that might tend to juniorize the model.
  • Lego_MooseLego_Moose Member Posts: 36
Another Western Collection (Favorite Bandit's Secret Hideout)
    Or Forestman (Favorite Camouflaged Outpost)
